Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Recommended Posts

I visited the indoor golf course, Legends Indoor Golf, in Downers Grove yesterday. They have 8 bays or so. $30 for the round. They utilize Foresight GC2 technology with about 30-40 courses to play on. You can also putt and chip which gets some getting used to. I will definitely be practicing there. Fun environment. The owner was very helpful. I can't believe more people aren't using this place.

First two days of my Wichita trip have been a bit of a bust.

45 degrees, windy as heck, and the course I wanted was closed.

Still played, but it felt too much like home.

I guess they rotate course closures here during winter months.

But, today is high 60’s, low wind, and Auburn Hills is open!

Ok, I messed up.

Every course in Wichita is booked solid.

I forgot it was Saturday and every course in the world isn't dead like Oak Grove. Looks like we’re headed 20 miles west to Cherry Oaks.

Auburn Hills will have to wait until next year.

GDN this morning. Bear and I were the first ones out even though we didn’t tee off until about 9:00. $40 to walk feels about right but they had a lot of stones charging $72 last weekend. The greens were pretty decent and, since they froze a bit with cold nights last week, they had some pace to them. However, there was standing water with films of ice on top in a bunch of bunkers and lots of sections of beat up turf. They finally gave up on 16 and seeded the section that’s been GUR for a decade. No birdies but I struck the ball well. 77. Looking at the forecast, this could be it for the year for me.

Wonderful day at Prairie Landing yesterday. Was a bit concerned on the range as the winds were howling and the hands got very cold. However, at the 11 o'clock tee time, the temps warmed up, winds lessened and it was a fun 3:45 walk. The course itself is in very good conditions and the greens were a bt slow after being punched and sanded. Encountered a group on the 10th tee who were 2 groups in front of us, got lost between 9 and 10 and then proceeded to hit 7 balls for 3 guys off the tee. They graciously let us play through but then hit into us on our second shots...um, OK.

Played a nice round with a couple of birdies so if this is the last round of 2019, it goes out on a nice note.

One last thing about Legends Indoor Golf. Foresight GC2 is set in front of the player and you have to set up fairly close to the monitor. If you are a slicer, it will encourage you to hit draws. But I'm a player who likes to hit draws and I normally setup on the left side of the tee box. I've used Trackman before, but someone help me remember if you have more room to setup your shot than GC2? I think I prefer Trackman. The man who runs Legends and is a switch coach said that you can't trust Trackman for any club path data, only ball data. Is that a typical criticism of Trackman or just comments from someone who prefers GC2?

Full blown trackman independently measures clubhead and ball

Trackman range only measures the ball

Not as certain about GC quad foresight. I think that’s what they have at golf galaxy and that was ball only.

I think if you have the full system, more $$&, foresight may give clubhead info

I recently picked up an ST190 driver so I thought I'd head over to the rockpile at Flagg Creek to hit a bucket on the range. Grabbed an old bag and threw in a couple of tees and gloves and various shafts for the driver to test. Get there about 3:30 and pro-shop attendant said we're closed. Head off and the course superintendent saw me and said, "Hey bud, go out and play 8 and 9 if you like." Why not I thought. Oops, didn't bring any balls. He gets me 3 balls and says have fun. Teed off on 8 from the tips and hit the Warrior ball (?) with a 6-iron and then the 2 other Srixon range balls. Get up there and the Warrior is 12" from the hole. Got on my phone and ordered 5 dozen of them! Hehe. Nah, kidding. Hit 3 balls off the 9th from the backs which I thought were down the middle. Found 1 of them. Hit that to the green. Couldn't find it. Time to go home. See you in March. Hopefully.

I don't recall ever finishing a round of golf with a layer of ice on the windshield. Lol.

Not looking good for the Iron Man open... will be surprised if this snow melts for Sunday given what the temps look like the rest of the week. Possible rain/snow Sunday doesn't help the cause either...

... I think this has been discussed but wanted to ask again, for those that have been fitted at Club Champion, is there a "best" in the Chicago area? I am in Bolingbrook but don't mind driving to any of them if one of the others has a fitter that is highly recommended by you guys. Thanks!

Not surprised. I usually go to the Buffalo Grove dome, but hit White Pines once last winter. It had been a few years. The dome was falling apart. It was clear that White Pines was putting zero dollars back into the facility.

Recently heard from a buddy who's got some Bensenville connections that White Pines may be closing down...period.

CC is pretty serious about training their fitters and standardizing how they do things, especially since they got bought by a PE firm...and WIllowbrook is HQ, so that's where they do their fitter training. I think it really comes down to the individual fitter within the location. It's entirely possible that you get two side by side and have a different experience with each of them.

FWIW, I'm not sure how many people would have experience across multiple locations, but I'll share this: I had a really good experience with Roger Paiz at Willowbrook back in January. A good friend of mine had a good experience in Deerfield (don't know his fitter's name but could find out).

I always go to Willowbrook when I want to check things and re-adjust things. I'm picky as hell when it comes to this stuff and they've done a great job with my fittings and club work.

First round in Phoenix today. I walked 18 in 82 degree temps and sunny skies. Cave Creek is a local muni, but it was in great shape and only $35. Gotta start somewhere. I'm going to try to play the courses out here I haven't played before circling back and hitting some of the more well known courses.

Why not go up to Apache Stronghold which is cheap but solid. A Tom Doak design and supposed to be a great layout but with poor conditioning.

... Be sure and play Aguila. My favorite Phoenix course for the money and a great walking course. Out of 107 rounds last winter I probably played there 50 times. I got a city card and it was $19 to walk at twilite.
