Taylormade SIM Drivers

I spent most of last year playing really well with a Callaway Rogue, so well that when I swapped it out for the Mizuno MP650 my friends thought I was insane. The truth is I carry the 650 just as far as the Rogue, little less height but a bit more total distance due to roll out. There is no difference in forgiveness, my bad shots are still bad. The shafts is the stock Orochi.

 

The moral of the story.........whats new?

Last year's models with new paint. I like the look of the whole lineup actually (except the sole of the MAX driver), but that's because I liked the look of last year's lineup and these are largely the same. At address they're only superficially different.

I'll stick with my M5 for now, which has even more adjustability than the SIM (strange move, TM).

Not really a strange move. They still can help fix a fade/draw through the front weight and the big back weight adds forgiveness.

I don't see any indication that the back weight can easily be swapped out (beyond a custom order) and if it can be, it's probably via separately purchased part. This is a step back from the M5 which allowed for both draw/fade adjustment and front/back, which was really helpful in dialing in spin/launch.

Last year I pointed out that f9 was released first and m6 second with the lower sole and most said its been done before although I'm not sure which driver it would be. Obviously drivers are designed a year+ in advance but interesting both TM and Cobra had the idea to use that design last year.

But when it came to the M5, just about everyone on tour had the weights back, which IMO is why TM has (wisely) moved away from giving you the option to jack both weights forward. It is all about high MOI these days, which IMO is a good thing. The more radical sole design allows for that high MOI to keep from raising the CG significantly like it does with the M5.

The huge success of the PING G400 series, particularly the MAX, is going to push everyone in that direction and I think that is a good thing.

And the furthest forward you see is guys like DJ/Rahm/Koepka who have their weights set pretty neutral. No one is cramming things forward anymore, the pros know that MOI = spin stability. If we look at both the aforementioned trend with the PING G400 series, plus the fact that the smaller "Tour" drivers have started going away, it becomes pretty clear where the industry trend is heading. I've posted it before at the same time last year, but I will keep sharing the CG/MOI chart showing all the drivers from the last 5 years and the glaring gap that no one has touched yet. This is where I believe TM is heading with the SIM line and whatever comes next, and I imagine that most other companies will be following suit as IMO it is really the last frontier for driver performance.

most reviews ive seen so far seem like the SIM is a more penetrating flight/lower launch... Ive loved my m5 all year but it definitely launches higher with very low spin giving me crazy distance all year. Cant wait to hit the SIM!

yea my 9* with either an ozik black tie or Tensei Pro Orange launches over 14* but sub 2200 spin. Not complaining b/c ive loved it all year, but id like a flatter flight that the SIM seems to have.

B/c of the launch I originally thought the 8* would be perfect im questioning that already

Seeing Matt at TXG hit a 10.5 at 12* makes me think to try 10.5 also. Or maybe stick with the 9* since my m5 launches 14 now.... Definitely seems spin is normalized and more controllable too. Really looking forward to these and cant wait

The TaylorMade pros (Rory, Tiger, DJ, Day) are the longest hitters on tour. They have all the distance they need and prioritize control. For me, I'm trying to squeeze out distance by keeping launch and spin low. The SIM takes some of that adjustability away.

I have to say, the M5 track weight system is clunky and the stock weights are too light. But I was hoping for an improvement on that system rather than an elimination of half of it.

Having said all that, I'll surely give the SIM drivers a test to see how they compare. If launch and spin numbers are in the right window, then the loss of adjustability might not end up mattering.

iThe SIM is actually a darn good looking driver and performance based on youtube vids is quite an improvement on recent TM Drivers from the M3-M6.
