Which 2020 Driver Did You Order?

Went to PGASS today to hit new drivers for the first time in forever. Could barely get any of the new drivers to spin over 2000 rpm. Was able to get up to 169 ball speed but everything was falling out of the sky. Granted i was hitting mostly near the toe but very few seemed playable regarding spin. Mavrik sounded and felt and looked great. Not a big fan of the SIMs feel though.

I've been struggling for a while now hitting my 3W and driver the same distance. I have a high swing speed, so it's been especially frustrating feeling that I just can't get anything out of my driver. I almost blind ordered a 2020 driver, taking another random guess at which combination would work for me, but decided instead to actually go get fit for one and finally figure out what the heck is going on.

I'm definitely glad that I did! I can make a longer post if anyone is interested in hearing the whole story, but the nutshell is that we figured out the problem and I gained literally (no I'm not kidding) ~40-yards in carry and ~60-yards in total distance. I tried every single 2020 driver offering and ended up with:

Mavrik Sub Zero 9* (lofted down to 8*) with OBAN Kiyoshi Tour Limited 60X

Wow $160 is a great deal for the ventus upgrade. Where did you order it through? I asked DD and they didn’t even have pricing on shaft upgrades yet.

Took advantage of the 150% trade in and got a 10.5 SIM with Rogue silver 60 and a set of P790s for an after-trade total of $1.68. I don't really "need" either, but I had a bunch of stuff sitting around. I'm really curious to see how the SIM does against my M5. Hoping the SIM is just as good with slightly better stability/performance on a miss.

The P790s... I don't know. I really like my Honma 747v, and in 40 years of golf they might be my favorite irons of all time - I wish I had them 20 years ago. But, as I get older and with my very average swing speed I can use another few mph of ball speed, as long as the gaps are right. I've dabbled in juiced irons before and I won't be shocked or truly disappointed if the 790s end up in the spare bag. We'll see.

I just received my Mavrik 9* with the Black Ventus. I took advange of the 150% trade in allowance, so the upcharge for the Ventus was less painfull. I'd been putting off purchasing the Ventus, but new year new season...Looking forward to trying the setup tomorrow in the sim.

I have owned a TM driver since the SLDR but traded in a bunch of old stuff for a SIM, 10.5 with a Pro White. Basically a wash and my closet is less crowded.

Went a bit shorter in length (44.75) and excited to how it holds up. Played the G400 Max with a busted up old Veylix shaft for a while now. Should be fun.

Leaning towards the regular Mavrik over the subzero. Ive had the last three sub zero models but Ive gotten better results now with the standard Mavrik over the SZ, mostly because mishits can just end up dropping out of the sky because of too little spin.

Wonder when Ping is going to put out their model for the year, though lately the Ping models have spun way too much for me. Was a Ping guy for a long time back to the i15

2016 M2 baby, solid metal sole, none of this flimsy carbon-urethane that flakes and cracks off the deck! That said, I really like the topline/address of the M5/6, just not the bottom where all the damage will ensue.

Hope you can deal with sound and feel. I hit this driver 3 times and could not throw it far enough away from me, maybe the harshest sounding worst feeling club I have hit.

i do have a Mavrik on the way

Lol, it’s not ‘that’ bad... ;). Seriously though, Callaway did drop the ball on the sound and feel with the EF, but it is a performer. And it’s not L4V/Sumo bad. That said, grabbed my first batch of clubs from the basement to trade in, and "paid" for a Mavrik Max (Rogue White). Grabbed my second batch of clubs from the basement, and "paid" for a Mavrik (Oban Hashimoto). It's too easy to justify with this 50% bonus business, and I have a bunch of other shafts around to demo with, including my fitted Speeder Evo VI 661. Will see how they do head-to-head when they arrive if the weather cooperates here in NJ.

No doubt, the EF performs. It didn’t win a bunch of “best of” awards here and elsewhere for no reason. That said, its sound and feel were a turn-off for a bunch of people. Personally, I can’t deny it is there, but I think it is a bit overblown when out on the course. My G400 Max is similar—not the best sound and feel, but it performs. Plenty of people still use that driver of course.

Most reports seem to show better sound/feel with the Mavrik, but I might miss the sliding weight. I do use the slider in the EF to adjust draw/fade, and I do use a heavier slider weight to account for playing my drivers at 44.5”. I ordered my Mavrik/Mavrik Max drivers -1”, and did request that they account for that with SW, so we’ll see what happens.

I am not doubling the performance of the Flash, huge callaway fan, that one was just not for me. I know others have enjoyed, played it well.

i ordered the Mavrik blind after hearing they fixed that part, OG Epic was my last.
