Used Epic Flash or new Mavrik

In the market for a new driver. My trackman numbers are slightly better w/ Mavrik: +1mph SS, +5yards carry. Spin is the same for both.

Dispersion was very tight with the Epic Flash. Both clubs gave me at least +10yds over my GBB Epic.

Look forward to your opinions.......

I just had a session yesterday with the Mavrik Max and I think it's the straightest driver I have ever hit.. And very efficient. Not the longest and the demo head was too light at D2 swingweight but that face is forgiving asf. I put some trash swings at it, expecting to hook it or just go nowhere but it we dead straight. Seriosly recommend giving that head a try.

I went from OG Epic SZ to Std Mav. Reasons I went with Mav over EF:

I hate the line on the crown on the EFSound and feel is 1000x better on the MavI really liked the Aldila Rogue White stock shaftSpin rates were slightly more consistent across the face for me

I just went with the Mavrik over my gamer, the Epic Flash. Performance was very similar but I had better dispersion with the Mavrik. What really sold me was the sound and feel. I loved the Epic Flash but it was loud, the Mavrik is lightyears better in that category. When hitting them side by side ball for ball I was blown away.

I am culling this from reading and watching a lot on the new Mavriks, as well as owning the standard Mav and the Mav Max. The SZ seems to be the least likely to be a big jump from the EF to the Mav. That TXG dude hits bombs all day with everything he tests--not all that relevant to us mere mortals. The standard Mav is somewhere in the middle where some people are really getting on with it, while others are not seeing anything amazing. The Max is where I am seeing the most chatter of a leap in feel and forgiveness over the EF.

I need to play around with my settings, and sort out swing weight, but I am very impressed with the Max in limited time out on the course. Moreso than the standard Mav. Tons of forgiveness in the Max, better sound and feel than the EF, ability to move weights around, etc. Spin appears to be very controlled (and controllable) in the Max. Great head all-around for a wide range of folks.

I got a great deal on a Flash from Callaway Pre-Owned. Virtually in mint condition for $134.99. For me the Mavrik wasn't THAT much better to warrant spending the extra money.

Sound, sound, sound. If you can tolerate (or even like) the EF sound, get the EF. Otherwise, get the mavrik.

For most the mav won’t be that different then EF. I love the TXG guys but Matty is just too good to miss it enough to compare what most of us will benefit from which is added ball speeds off center. EF quite good.

 

to me a better test is Mavrik vs Rogue. Rogue is a very forgiving club. Does the flash face help here in A more meaningful way?

 

me personally it’s Mavrik all day as I also do not like the EF crown line nor sound. I admit being petty. :)

Im leaning towards the Mav. I paired it with a Tensei orange shaft I was using with my OG Epic and it felt GREAT! More so than the Flash. Very tempting to pickup a flash from CPO considering the prices but that easily gets forgotten when the club performs.

Epic Flash with the loud sound has a lot of shock and awe power - you should consider this a plus when playing with your buddies. I do.

Friend showed up for our weekly game sporting a new/used Epic Flash. Having read this thread the other day I was expecting to hear some noise but it was not noisey in the least. And my friend uses a hard X type ball. You guys complaining about noise with the EF need to go try a Ping G or one of the other truly loud drivers. The EF doesn't even come close.

I had the Epic Sub Zero and went with the Mavrik Sub Zero. I demoed it for a few rounds at my club and hit it in the store as well. I was hitting my Epic quite well and wasn’t even looking for a new driver but just wanted to try it out.

I demoed the Epic Flash when it came out and didn’t really see any improvement. But with the Mavrik, I was crushing my drives and hitting it just as accurately. The improvement was well worth the purchase.

Performance is the only thing i look for in a club. I’ve heard that the sound is improved, but I could care less about how a driver sounds. If it sounds like banging a tin can, but goes 300 yards in the middle of the fairway every time, I’ll take that trade off.

I can't imagine 'sound' ever being a factor for me in selecting a driver.

My pro has the Mavrik line of demos at the club; looking forward to hitting them in the spring when the snow melts!

This is easy. You able to/want to spend an extra $300 or so for 5 yards? If sound is main issue... find a tour issue head and/or hot melt it. IMO, half a club of distance isn't worth $300 and change. I'd rather grab a lesson and deep tissue massage for $300 than 5 yards in ideal conditions.

Ok gaming the Epic Flash sub zero and today hit the Mav and Mav sub zero. I had been hearing a lot about the Mav sub zero being too low spin and falling out of the sky.

To begin. I like my Epic Flash Sub. Best driver I have had for the past three seasons. I don’t like the sound either, but it really only gets trash can loud every once in awhile. I actually stopped noticing the sound.

Mav (regular one). I wanted to like this one as others have gone from Sub zero to this, but it just spins too much for me. Probably my crappy swing, but clubs are unique to everyone, and what works for one doesn’t work for me. Now, it felt good. It was fairly long, and straight, and sounded great. But had no chance of knocking out the EFSZ

Mav Sub Zero. I actually had hit One owned by a buddy of mine The other day while we were playing. He is a LOONG hitter (does some long drive stuff...think 140mph 200 mph ball speed) kind of guy so he had an 80X tipped shaft in it. Dared me to hit it within 20 yards of my EFSZ. I won a beer. I knocked it past my drive with his (of course I nearly ruptured a shoulder tendon swinging). Anyway, it intrigued me so I tried it with the Rogue shaft noted above by another poster. It was good. Straight for sure but ball speeds were the same or 1-2 mph slower. I hit them both together and to be honest, no difference whatsoever. In fact EFSZ had about 200 rpm less spin.

Verdict, I don’t think its worth the money for me to upgrade at this point. It’s a great driver and sounds WAYYYY better, but I don’t mind the sound much and would prefer to spend that money on a new set of used irons ;)

So. Great club, incremental at best upgrade solely based on sound.

I agree, my playing partners use M2, G30, and R1. My EF-SZ is probably the most inoffensive sounding of the group. I also suspect the EF sound could be a bit shaft dependent. When I demo-ed outside with several shafts, the tone did seem to change as well.

Nice writeup. Just the info we need. My attitude is all these drivers are long, so it’s all about the look and fit. Feel is a big part of it and sound is probably 80 percent of that with the rest the sensation at impact.

I can hit a Ping G30 well but it sounds like banging the lid of a metal trash can to my ear. (The 445cc Ping G400 sounds great.) I really did not like the sound of the Epic Flash unless it was hotmelted. I used to really like Callaway drivers (played Razr X Black Ti a long time) and look forward to hearing this one live. This lightweight Wilson D7 build I’ve been messing around with this winter has stuck around because it sounds and feels really good, like best of any Wilson driver I’ve heard in years. Hard to play a driver if I hate how it sounds.

Not sure about the look of the Mavrik heads but will definitely hit them regardless.

Thanks. And full disclosure--since I made that post, I had more opportunity to hit the Mav and Mav Max out on an empty course in 40 degree NJ this past weekend (hey, I'll take what I can get). I am really torn, and need to put some more demo time in. Don't sleep on the standard Mav if you are looking for more forgiveness; and don't sleep on the Mav Max if you assume you wouldn't play a driver of that type. The benefit of doing it out on the course, is I see the real result of my swing, warts and all. But without being on a trackman or the like, I don't really know what the numbers are saying.

Bottom line, I would recommend hitting both the Mav and Mav Max. I really like the standard Mav. It has more muted feel and sound than the Max, and is still very forgiving. Yet, I still feel like the Max should end up being the one. Out on the course though, the Max hasn't run away with it. I am going to give the 9* Max a shot to see if I can eek some more distance and lower spin out of it.

That can't be right even when they run their sales I have never seen the EF go under like 250-275. Even the Rogue is still like 150-250 from there.
