Rather deal with that on the course than on the range. Nothing worse that the guy telling the wind how much he hates himself and how he's just too stupid to quit this game.

Do you know the root cause of why guys that act like this on the course?

A close relative on my wife's side decided he wanted to play golf... and with our regular group.  We are a group of retirees who play fast.  This person has not played much golf and is very slow.  He'll be hitting his 6th shot on a par 4 and still not be on the green.  I have my own cart.  He expects to ride with me and straps his bag on without even asking.  We play early morning golf.  He evidently crawls out of bed and heads to the course without brushing his teeth or bathing.  During cold rounds, I have to keep the cart doors strapped open or the odor gets sickening.  Then, he paid an annual membership without telling me.  So, he jumps in with me two or three days/week.

This relative is married for the third time.  His recent marriage is his new wife's fifth.  They're both 70.  Been sorta a prodigal to his family so they don't want to upset him.

Each 4th of July weekend, we have a family golf outing.  Two couples from here meet two cousin couples from a few states away... about halfway between.  We four guys play golf and the women gossip and/or shop.  Had one very nice course we generally played one of the 4 days.  This person insisted on joining us last year.  We could not schedule the difficult course because of his ability.  Looks like it will be the same this coming 4th of July.

Nothing I can do.  Messes up the pairings in our own group.  The guys are pretty patient, but a couple of them are getting close to losing theirs.  My wife doesn't know what to do.  If I come down too hard, may effect a good family history with the beautiful and patient lady who has put up with me for 57 years.

In a nutshell... golf has lost a lot of its enjoyment the days he joins us.

Yep. We got that guy that plays with us sometimes. He also sometimes has trouble counting... Always on the low end of course. Yet it's a group of people who all work together. He seems to have no trouble with math at work lol...

One of my golfing mates has trouble counting...this is with him, he's more likely to overcount than undercount.

He really does have problems counting😂

“hey man, you stink. if you don’t shower, either take your own cart or you have to find someone else to play with”

I have an older friend like that who works in his yard all day the day before, always wants to play early golf, so fails to shower in the morning or even put on deodorant. He lives nearby so I used to give him a ride to the course. No more.

On the other hand I like to have a leisurely morning, sipping coffee, reading the news and emails. Then breakfast, a shave and a shower and I'm on the course by 9:30.

Now I know the secret of how Bill (name has been changed to protect the stinky) gets to the course at 7:30.

Four novices on the course, one bag. No starter or marshals as it was a Monday.   Looked like they were playing a scramble, as they gathered together to watch each shot. No, they were each playing their own ball.  They were educated after the round.

I don't like playing with the constant complainer.  One complaint about the greens is ok but I don't need to hear about how bad the greens are on every missed putt.  Getting stuck in slow play is bad enough but having a guy in the group complain about it all day just compounds the irritation.  Complain and get mad over 2 or 3 swings, no big deal.  Complain and get mad over every bad swing, no thanks.

I have mixed feeling about this next guy because they tend to be good guys and generally fun to be around.  It's the guy that always has to have a bunch of semi-complicated bets.  I'll play a nassau anytime or the occasional skins but save the junk and left right vegas stuff for one round on the marathon golf trip instead of breaking out the notebook and calculator every time you tee it up.

I hear you.  I want to focus on my golf game.  When I encounter that guy I always do the thanks, no thanks routine... tell him I didn't bring my accountant with me.

That's pretty much how it goes, except he's usually only one shot wrong.

"Seven for me"

"Is that what you want? You only took six shots..."

I once had a golf acquaintance who appointed himself scorekeeper for the group, even though I don't want anyone else keeping my score.  I like to keep it in my head.  Well, he'd ask everyone, "What did you get?"  So I started reporting a score higher than what I got.  Paul would say, "I had you for a par."  Well, then just put down the damn score without asking me.  I think he just wanted to catch someone cheating...

Maybe he was trying to catch people out, but he may just have wanted to check.

I know I can usually track how many shots my playing partners have hit without having to think about it too much. I think it comes from playing competitive events when I was younger, especially matchplay.

But there are times every round when I don't, perhaps because I'm focused on trying to recover from trouble or the other player is deep in the weeds and I'm can't see him.

Yesterday, on a par five for example, my playing partner (the same guy who has problems counting) chipped up from the apron and one-putted. I thought he had par, but he said it was a six. Then I remembered he'd messed up his tee shot and it was indeed a six.

One morning in the cart, just start sniffing the air. Do it a few times on the first hole. On the second tee, ask, "do you smell that? WTF is that damn smell?"

Continue as needed throughout the round until he realizes it's him.

Now that's a good and very diplomatic way to handle that issue. Kudos. I will try that on my guy if we ever ride in a cart together again.  I usually try to arrange things to avoid sharing a cart with him.

I really like playing all alone.  Do play occasionally with my son, good friend or tournaments.  Usually pick a good time of day at a very sparsely used golf course.

Hate to play with Loud, Slow, Sunflower/Chew.  Can take about anything else.

Just spit balling here, everyone has good ideas but I have questions:

1. Are you implying he is twice divorced because he smells so bad?

2. Does anyone in his family knew if he use to smell, maybe its the new wife?

3. Maybe, this be a long route, get a discussion going about the "right" time to take a shower. Asks him when he showers. See if he showers before bed, or after golf. If he doesn't shower before bed, just hit him with "so you sleep in your own filth?"

Long story...

Married a woman who was divorced and had a daughter.

They had two boys and he adopted the daughter.

While deployed with the Army, she fell in love with another guy and divorced him.

He remarried a real witch.  For almost 30 years wouldn't allow him to visit his sons.

In the meantime, his first wife had divorced the guy she left him for and married another guy.

His second wife died and his first wife's fourth husband was killed in a work accident.

When his second wife died, he immediately began contact with his two boys.  She was living with one of them.

The "fell back in love" and were married this past December.

Her fifth marriage... but four husbands.

His third marriage... but to two women.

Are you dizzy yet????  :>)

Well, it's got a few more layers to it than the traditional boy-meets-girl...

anyone remember St. Elsewhere?

this was the alternate end scene, where instead of a snow globe, the kid sat with a Rubiks Cube, and every move he made affected someone's life.

A lot of Double D's in this story.

Divorce & Deaths.

So the 1st wife missed the stench of his body odor and remarried him?

She was living with one of their boys and, I think, he and his wife were tiring of a

"guest" who did nothing but sit in a recliner and watch tv all day. She is also a hypochondriac and he is retired military with full health care benefits. Who knows, though.  I'm asking no questions as to what they see in each other.  I suppose some ask why a beautiful and very patient blonde lady has put up with me for 57 years!!!  :>)
