Best Players’ CB irons

Have you considered Wishon 575 MMC CB or 565 MC? There are several top class fitters in the UK who could custom fit and build a set for you (once people are allowed out and about again). They are produced with a 5 step forging process and every bit as good as the best OEM gear.

Among OEM brands, they all produce good stuff these days. Mizuno JPX919 Tour or MP20 MMC, Titleist T100 or 620 CB, Ping i210, Callaway Apex Pro, Wilson Staff FG Tour V6, Taylormade 760, Ben Hogan PTX Pro, Srixon 785, Honma TW747 ...

Note that all of these newer clubs will have stronger lofts than your TM300 set, so compare performance loft for loft, not based on the number stamped on the sole.

I will have to echo the people who have suggested the Titleist CBs. I have some 718s and they are very compact, super minimal offset and feel great. I agree that they arent the most forgiving irons, but I love that they are blade-like with a little more help.

Good call on the Bridgestones. Some lovely looking clubs there and they seem discerning with their releases.

Wishon is a fascinating call but for reasons I can’t quite fathom, drawn to Japanese clubs. Likely because I’m a mug for a tall tale of Japanese steel and craftsmanship.

Really want to know more about Kyoei. They look the dog’s swingers.

I play the Apex Pro 16's which I love. Really traditional lofts, forged head, some tungsten in the longer irons and you can get them on eBay for next to nothing. They have been in many pros bags so are genuinely good heads. I also like the Titleist CB's and the Cobra CB's as well. The P760 set from TM is also well with a hit but are still $$.

If you like JDM stuff, then Yonex and Miura CB 1008 are excellent options.

I've tried everything... and I mean owned, played and now keep in storage, CBs and MBs from PXG, Mizzy, TM, Titlelist, Miura, Yonex, Ping, etc.

To each his/her own, but for me J15 CBs rule them all.

The J15 CBs are amazing, but if you're looking for less offset and a 1 piece forged players CB with minimal offset, the Honma TW737V are worth a look. Really nice irons.

718cbs are the best cb iron I have hit in the last 4 years and I have tried just about everything. The newer model was made less forgiving just a heads up. Ptx pros are very good too.

honestly based on your requirements - I would recommend a combo set. maybe blades into the 7/8 iron and then cavity back or hollow in the longer irons.

What performance gains are you looking for? If you want more distance, you will need to pick up a multi metal club at minimum and then up to something with speed foam/slots/gremlins... I just put away my 25 year old Taylor Made Oversize (they look similar to your 300s) and put 2012 Adams CMBs into play... the shaft change was probably the biggest difference. They don't go significantly farther than my old irons, but I'm hoping once I get used to them I see some performance gains (adding a 1/2 to my clubs and then having to hit off mats for 3 months hasn't done wonders for my striking). There are plenty of great suggestions in this thread, and plenty of great options to be had new or used depending on your budget...

Obviously now is not the time to be testing irons! But I'd figure out exactly what performance gains you want, and then pay attention to different shafts and find one that best suits your swing... I'm a pretty firm believer in getting into the right shaft for best performance, and if the only thing you want is lower launch, a different shaft might be the ticket.

While most suggest a major company brand name iron set, I will suggest a great looking 'component' club head, the Dynacraft muscle blade iron head. One aspect really attracted me to building a set with this head is the lack of offset you normally see in most GI iron sets. I personally like the looks of these heads and enjoy the accomplishment of building my own set and not feeling I have to purchase a major brand to feel legitimate or associated with others, and save a ton of money as well! Building your own is rather easy, and I have done it for my last 3 sets of irons. I think there was another set on there but they might be gone already too.

I hit them back when they came out and LOVED them, but had just bought irons the year prior and couldn't justify dumping them.

Very pleased to have these in the bag after all this time.

Yea I saw there was a flawless looking set for like 350? And another for like 250? I can’t remember, but whichever was the pricier ones looked phenomenal.

Not overly fussed with distance to be fair. Whack it a decent way. For me, in terms of performance, I’ll be looking for something potentially a little more forgiving on off centre hits (although the TM300s aren’t a pig in this regard) and something that launches a little lower and possibly with a little less spin.

Shaft wise, I think I’m settled. Last year I reshafted by irons with Nippon Modus 125 in a regular flex and they feel great. I believe they’ve tightened my dispersion, brought better consistency and have improved feel. I would keep those shafts unless a club fitter had a compelling reason and data to back it up. Think they may have knocked the flight down a touch too.

Another vote for the MMC MP 20. Looks, feel and performance. Absolutely love mine coming up 7 months now. Modus 120 shaft seems to match well.

MP5 is just as forgiving and feels better IMO. Though, the titleist is a bit more forgiving through the turf.
