Jon Rahm to Callaway

I read his irons were made sans the face cup technology so I would doubt that they are selling retail irons without that tech in them. Again, I know all companies have pros playing non-retail clubs but this seems so obvious and awkward.

Callaway's brand new poster boy doesn't have 1 product today that someone can go and buy (most of the equipment will never be retail available). Except a TM putter.

I like Callaway stuff but honestly this whole thing has made me almost look LESS at Callaway clubs compared to some other companies out there. Just my 2 cents. I might be alone.

I'm guessing if the posts in the new Apex irons thread are correct theres going to be a Apex TCB (tour cavity back?), traditional lofts and no cup face? I would bet thats probably the prototypes that Xander and Rahm are using.

I really don't think that's correct....at least as it relates to the line of Apex irons that will be hitting retail.  As I've mentioned in one or two threads, my regular playing partner works in the industry and one of his friends that he used to work with started with Cally as a rep early last year.  I played with these guys about a month ago or so and along with a couple of the new woods, he brought 7 irons from two out of the three new Apex irons.  I saw and held in-hand the new standard Apex and the Apex DCB (which is the most GI-ish of the group).  The only one he didn't have with him was the new Apex Pro.  My understanding from him is that these three would be the retail Apex line.

The Apex Pro 19 DOT version was in fact the retail iron without the face cup technology in the long irons and were available.  They were limited but were available and were pretty similar to Xander's raw prototype irons.

The triple diamond head he's playing might end up being made available at some point although since it doesn't have the latest jailbreak technology, it might not be.  The other triple diamond head on the USGA conforming list will probably be the one made available.  Callaway has sold their triple diamond heads on a limited basis the last two product cycles.  Why wouldn't they sell the Epic Speed?

In the Bag:

Driver: 10.5 Epic Speed Graphite Design AD-ITZ 60

Fairway Wood: 15 Epic Speed Graphite Design AD-ITZ 70

Fairway Wood: 19 Epic Flash Tensei Blue 75

Irons: Apex Pro '19 4-AW, Aerotech Steelfiber 95

Wedges: 54 MD4 and 58 '19 PM Grind

Grips: Tour Velvet Jumbo

Putter: Odyssey MXM 9 HT

Balls: Chrome soft Triple Track

Doesn't Xander use the Double Dots?

Yes possibly.  I know there were a single dot and a double dot, one had less less (no) offset.  I think both were minus the face cup technology.

Could be mistaken, but I thought I had seen somewhere that the diamond heads with two bars on the sole still had the new jailbreak bracket inside. Think someone said the bars showing on the sole are just aesthetic, and the other two were left off to make room for front weight.

Is it weird to anyone else that they signed a golfer to huge money who is going to play a tournament without 1 club you can buy from that company at retail? I understand a lot of companies don’t have their pros playing retail models but I feel like they at least hide it better. I have my doubts it is the retail CSx now too.

Two points.

First, it's marketing.  Given his world rank and that he's making a switch the interest in what he's going to play is probably at its maximum in his debut.   If what he's playing in his debut hasn't been seen by the golf masses, so much the better - it becomes an exotic mystery club.   Anyone that's followed along up to that point knows that anything he's playing now is something (or resembles something) we'll be able to buy this year.

And with a strong showing, everything gets magnified.   If not, ah well, still getting dialed in, has some tweaking to do.    Either way, we're talking about it.

Secondly, from a practical perspective, why would Rahm want to waste time getting dialed in for one setup going into the season then go through it again in a few weeks while the season is underway?

Tripp Isenhour on Golf Central said he would be nervous if Rahm was going from blades to cavity backs. LOL what is this, the Payne Stewart switch from the mid 90s? The ball switch is what concerned Tripp. He doesn’t suspect Rahm will have the issues that Rose had. Brandel said after you give 50% of your money to the government and 20% to your agent, what do you even have left after a big equipment deal?

That’s the great insight from the talking heads. Justin could play the ball of his choice when he went to Honma, but you think Rose is in a better position with the ball? Brandel’s already thinking about taxation after moving from FL to CT! I’d bet that what's left after taxes from the Callaway deal is significantly larger than Rahm’s pre-tax TaylorMade deal.

He didn’t play blades since he was in tour. Do these guys even watch golf!? 😂

Ol Rambo found out on 17 what some of us know about callaway drivers. Every now and then, a not so bad swing, with impact toe side of center, will produce a ball that goes more left than Bernie Sanders.

Literally Lol'd. Hilarious.

Rahm looked down at his driver after he saw the ball make a nascar turn. He looked at the impact spot and then looked up like "what have I done"...lol. maybe rahm will influence callaway to put some twist face into their drivers. Then I might give one a look...

Yes, I saw the whole thing and it was very cringey given how bright the spotlight is on him and this change at the moment. Obviously still some fine tuning and acclimation to be done under tournament conditions. It would indicate that Rahm benefitted from and had grown very comfortable with the different face progression that SIM offered, but of course not everybody does.

Has no one pointed that, although Callaway said he was going to use their Cuater shoes, he is wearing some Jordan´s and his caddie Adidas? I find it interesting, since I guess he´s getting quite a chunk of money from Callaway.

I know this thread has evolved/devolved into other areas but I still find it hard to believe that a thread about Jon Rahm moving to Callaway has generated 16 pages of comments!!  I would have bet against that 8 days a week!

Maybe there is. Other reason could be that there isn´t any Cuater shoe that he is comfortable with, but if that was the case, I´d guess that he would just keep using his adidas shoes

Adidas is much more of a competitor to Cuater than Jordan.

He’s wearing Jordan’s from 2 seasons ago, not some adidas you can buy from any store.

If you think this thread's been fun, Callaway will be announcing another very intriguing add to their Tour Staff in the near future. That thread may make this one look quite boring and short. 😆

Not sure, but I'd imagine it will go public this month.
