that is an urban myth. The original question (again proof is hard to find) was posed to Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s by Johnny Carson they believe and Hendrix response was Phil Neegy.

Megadeth was always just a tad too hard for me, not my favorite kind of solos. I appreciate the talent was just never my thing. I did get into them a bit though....

I think "peace sells" is one of the greatest metal songs ever 

 

I know this album was basically their version of Metallica's Black Album....But damn if i didn't listen to "Symphony of destruction" 5000 times before sporting events in my life. And "Sweating Bullets" is one of my alltime favorite weird songs

Hendrix was later asked the same question in the early 70's and he said Billy Gibbons was the best he'd seen.

There are so many great guitar solos that have been done, in the studio and live.  It is hard to say what is the best.  One of my favorites is from 1978 by Bruce Springsteen in the middle of Because the Night.  The beginning solo is a bit eerie and leads up to the big solo near the end of the song.  Of course, this isn't a technically difficult solo nor is it one of the best solos ever done.  However, anyone ever attending a Springsteen concert, certainly one in the 70s and early 80s know that Bruce was a live powerhouse rivaled by very few artists.  He still is.  There is just something seeing Bruce and the E Street Band live, especially the pre 80s ensemble.  Maybe I am a bit biased with Springsteen of that era but this one resonates with me very well. 

 

This video is from the 9/19/78 Passaic, NJ concert.  This was my first bootleg LPs I ever bought and one of my favorite Springsteen concerts he's ever done.  Solo starts around 3:49.  I have seen this song performed live three times (2000, 2016) and always loved his version of it.

Great point. For me a great solo doesn't have to have 127 notes played in a few bars. A single note held and bent can touch the soul. Probably why I love Gilmore and Lifeson. It wasn't always about speed, but rather the emotion. A slow buildup creating tension is as impressive as lightning fingers.

Symphony and sweating bullets was on Countdown to Extinction 1992.

The black album came out in 1991.

Rust in piece came out in 1990 and had - hanger 18 - tornado of souls - holy wars on it

 

Maybe Deth is a bit too hard because Dave knew he had to be harder and faster than his old band.

Right right, i just mean countdown to extinction i think was kind of seen as "their" black album. Like it differed a bit from their earlier work and maybe wasn't what the purists were looking for. 

 

Mustaine re-used the "4 horsemen" beat in a megadeth song too , except sped it up way faster. I can't remember the song.

Buddy came to the Chicago Hilton and jammed with our band that we threw together for my companies national sales conference back in 2006. He played 3 songs with us. He was one cool old dude.

Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands. The thing about Maiden is the guitars are always part of the story in the song, which I love. They can be loud and thrashing, or haunting and deep, or anywhere in between.

Was a Steely Dan fan BITD. Loved their jazz/rock fusion sound though admit that while some of their

lyrics were good, some were out there. Mostly I liked the sound. Josie was such a great sound. Could

listen to it a lot but I digress. Guitar solo wise this solo by Larry Carlton in Kid Charlemagne just hit me

when I first heard it because not only does it fit in with the song so well, the key changes make it a

little tricky. He probably had to spend some time getting it all worked out prior to recording. The finished

product is jus friggin' awesome. He first chimes in, that I notice, around the 1:55 mark but the solo starts

at around 2:10.  I know this solo is well known but I'm not sure how many realize just how complicated

it really was to come up with in the first place.

 

No video of the original recording so it is what it is..........................

Nice call. Steely Dan had incredible talent in finding some of the best guitarists on the planet. There is a YouTube vid out there with Larry going over this lead note by note.

Ya, I didn't find it but I found this breakdown. Great video for anyone who wants to momentarily

geek out on the fine details of Larry's solo......by a couple of guys who are no slouches themselves.
