The greatest guitar/musical solos ever

MtlJeff

Recommended Posts

Looks like I'll be meeting Jeff! I'm excited in an I haven't been to the ER for many years kind of way, lol.  Won't reveal what will likely set him off, and I'm lost in a sea of memories and nostalgia.  Really, where to start - probably Scotty Moore's solo on Elvis' Too Much --- and his rockabilly style in general influenced so many great guitar players.  60s and 70s ruled for me.  Before going there, the best guitar player in the world in the mid-80s in a performance on Austin City limits - almost makes me cry to watch it, he could be mesmerizing and it's my favorite of his songs and solos, okay the solo on Love Struck Baby is incredible, but this one is great and cool in its simplicity.

Wife wants to watch a new Hallmark Mystery Movie in a bit.  Before venturing back in time later in the weekend, another relatively recent guitar genius - Brian Setzer.  His solo in Gene and Eddie is fantastic (and the song is, in part, an homage to one of my all time favorite artists Eddie Cochran).  Studio recording is awesome, I've seen it on TV in a live performance that sadly isn't to be found anywhere that was electric and amazing, so here's a pretty decent version I'm sharing just because it was on Letterman.

Too late in my opinion, but I’ve developed a real appreciation of Neil Young.  Cowgirl in the Sand is one of my favourites.

It's almost unbelievable that Axl is 59 years old.  Do those hips still swivel like that?

Elliott Randall on Reelin' In The Years = amazing (Jimmy Page loved it), but although Steely Dan was a favorite when I was in junior high, putting countdown to ecstasy on the turntable and listening to the first song (that wasn't being played on AM radio where I lived) blew me away.  Denny Dias and the immortal Skunk Baxter have solos that make Bodhisattva a work of art!

Just one more this morning, this thread is awesome!

The original is awesome and bluegrass solos are under appreciated (by some), but BOW TO THE ASSEMBLY OF TALENT AND THE VIRTUOSITY ON DISPLAY IN THIS VIDEO! Solos galore! Get your Saturday off to a rollicking good start ---- yeeeeehawwww!

So i'll swerve a bit, i did leave it open a bit by saying "musical solos" in a sense. This is not the most complicated solo by any means or a traditional guitar solo. But i think it's one of the most amazing solos i've heard just in terms of overall impact

It's the 5:00 to 6:45 ish section of "To live is to die" by Metallica. If you are unfamiliar with the song, it's the band's dedication to Cliff Burton, their bassist who had died in a bus crash. This solo is played by James Hetfield . If you listen to the full song (it's 10 minutes long) this portion stands out as the most emotional tribute .

Not in line with one of the greatest guitar solo's ever but you just can't mention guitars without mentioning Mr. Billy Gibbons.

I think The Cars' Elliot Easton is a severely underrated guitarist. Their songs didn't really lend themselves to extended solos, but he packed a load of good stuff into 8 bars. Two of my favorites are Shake It Up, and Double Life.

I never got a chance to see The Cars live, but I did see Elliot play live with Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

I saw Crazy Horse in the early 90s and his knockdown drag out song was Like a Hurricane (on Weld). Amazing solo. Last time I saw him with Project of the Real it was Down by the River. His solos are technically simple (I think) but they are (to me) absolutely memorable for how they made me feel.

My first purchase from my first job in high school was a Pioneer SX-980, a Pioneer PL-518 turntable, and a pair of Bose 301s. I can't begin to count the number of hours spent listing to the rig. My nephew still has the receiver.

Old SX-850 - it's the one I wanted when I was a frosh at UI, but couldn't afford.  My SX-580 finally gave up the ghost a few years ago and I found this one online and had a guy in Des Moines repair/refurbish, so in today's dollars I got it cheaper! (Or so I explained to the wife).

Live Alive Tour came to Cedar Rapids where I was living in '87 - killed me to miss it, but I had to travel cross country to my now wife's college commencement - I chose wisely.
