Foley hate?

Because under Foley, Tiger started hitting these tuggy over the top cuts to left pins, which he very rarely hit before Foley. I hated watching him try to fit cuts into left pins far more often than he used to.

At least that was my impression.

I saw Tiger hit balls during his time with Foley and after. Your right about the tuggy over the top cuts during Foley, I watched him hit them at the Ryder cup. I also saw Tiger hit balls after Foley and it was much more impressive, he got his height back and was hitting all shot shapes.

I enjoy(ed) both Butch's and Haney's takes on golf/the swing. What does that mean?

I actually always find him engaging and interesting and thoughtful when he talks on camera or posts on socials.  He might be full of s*** or arrogant at times, but at least he appears to be thinking and trying to figure out how the golf swing works, which is something we're all interested in (or we wouldn't be here).

Perhaps the hate is due to his overt, aggressive and self-conscious attempts to create a strong personal brand based on being a "cool" yet super-upscale guy: the shades, the haircut, the watches, etc.   I'm not a cool guy but I was, in fact, an actual rock star and sold millions of records and was nominated for two Grammys, etc. and I am friends with actual cool guys who are also massive rock stars and...um, they don't TRY to be cool.  They just are cool.

You made my point. The "hate" towards Sean Foley makes no sense. He's a golf coach. You can like or dislike anybody's coaching techniques without hating anyone.

Well now you're just quibbling. One man's "hate" is another man's "dislike"/"don't care for." Doesn't really matter. Him being "successful" has zero to do with it for me, and I'm sure many others. I like plenty of "successful" golf coaches.

I completely agree with you. But this topic is about all of the hate you see towards Sean Foley. My take was that a lot of people project their own shortcomings onto those that are more successful.

Seems like a flawed hypothesis.  I haven't seen any palpable level of dislike for guys like Butch and a gaggle of other top shelf successful instructors.

I actually like most of the Lesson with a Pro shows he does on Golf Channel.. ha! He’s like a pocket sized golf accessory. Pros reach in their golf bag little pocket and pull out tees, a coin, and Sean Foley. And then he just says all this cool stuff about golf and about YOU! His players love that s***.

Fair enough. I don't know what the shortcomings of others are or their reasons for hating someone. Hate isn't something I have time to spend on or fully understand. I can't say that I've ever hated someone or even strongly disliked them so I can't really relate.

Or no one actually “hates” him they just find him extremely annoying and arrogant

Can anyone shed light on hos Mr. Foley got to where is is today? I mean I follow golf but not guru’s and it seems like he just suddenly appeared one day? Where did he get his start? Who was his break through student that finally gave him PGA Cred?

I believe it was Stephen Ames.

Yeah "hate" is a pretty strong word but it gets interchanged with "dislike" too often as the OP did. Anyway I'm in the dislike camp because he pings my  shyster radar.

Maybe some people are jealous, I can agree with that.  In that case the problem is with the jealous person not with the successful one.  Anyone can be successful if they're willing to put in the hard work.  Nothing worthwhile in life is easy or generally handed to a person.  Those who are handed things without putting in the hard word will never appreciate what they are given and will end up ruining it.  That's been my observation.

That said, a lot of people are not jealous of Sean Foley.  Most of us do not agree with his methods.  I certainly don't.  I tend to agree with, or in part with, the Jack Grout(s), Harvey Pennick(s), Butch Harmon(s), Mike Austin(s), David Ledbetter(s), Hank Haney(s), Adam Bazalgette(s), or a few others.  I just don't care for Foley.

Right. So if you don’t like his methods, don’t hire him.

I wouldn't even consider that.  Of course that doesn't mean I hate him.  I don't hate anyone.  I don't dislike him either.  I don't know the man.  I don't agree with some of his methods.  There's no hate there.  The term hate now being used for anyone not agreeing with someone's pov (not saying yours) is greatly overused and a huge exaggeration.  That is in reference to the OP's title and belief.

I agree with those who dislike Foley's instruction. I believe that if Justin Rose had a different instructor with him at the Masters and giving him advice his last three rounds wouldn't have been so awful. Good players who have worked with Foley are good in spite of him, not because of him. He's not the only bad instructor who teaches good players. As pretty much anyone who has seen Foley's instruction dvd can attest to it is garbage that isn't worth your time or money. Justin Rose would be better off finding another instructor to work with, but alas I fear that since he went back to working with Foley recently he is unlikely to part ways with him any time soon.

That was Tigers choice though. Tiger hit him up because he liked his work with Rose. I dont think anyone calls up Tiger and says I want to be your swing coach. He has to approach you.

So if you choose to go to a doctor and they do a terrible job and misdiagnose you, that’s all your fault?

no. Obviously there is some fault on both sides.
