Real vs Knock off grips

Recommended Posts

I recently bought some Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 grips on eBay. Seller had a good rating, so I gave it a shot. When the grips finally arrived (late), it was obvious that they were fakes. I ordered another set from Carl’s, and it was even more obvious when putting them side by side.

The seller refunded my money and told me I could keep the grips. An obvious move to avoid negative feedback. Good try buddy.

Can you tell which ones are real?

I learned the hard way a couple winters ago not to buy grips on ebay..... I got duped with MCC Aligns.  Lesson learned.

I vote that the left is real, but I would like a picture of the sides of the grips to see the seam, that's where it's super obvious to me.  The seam will be much more pronounced on the fakes.

On the fakes I stumbled upon, the "GOLF PRIDE" was larger font than the real ones, so I'll vote for the ones on the right being real.  The seller I dealt with also told me to keep them (this was probably 2 years ago), so I happily put them on any test club I put together.  If I like the club and end up playing it, I switch it over to a real grip.  If I decide to tear it all apart, I don't worry about losing the grip.  I have never left one of them on a club that I have re-sold.

There's no way I would be able to tell - and can't from the pics.  But thanks for the warning.  I've purchased grips off of ebay, and it never occurred to me they'd be something you would fake.  I actually even purchased some of these same grips off of ebay, but decided I didn't like them and found a wrap much more to my liking.  Maybe it's because I got fake ones, though I've also purchased wraps off of ebay that have worked out fine.  I'll be sticking with better-known golf sources from now on though.

Left are real and Right are fake!!!  I just went through the same process on Etsy.  The smell was the first obvious sign as someone pointed out.  The quality on the logos were off and the small double-banding on the bottom didn't line up.  Another subtle sign that I also see here on the right grips is the cord has a criss-cross pattern showing through in some spots.  All the MCC Golf Pride grips I looked at only had a vertical cord coming through.

Correct guys, the left ones are real, right ones are fake.

The smell was the first thing I noticed too (like cleaning fluid). The tread on the fake grips were much deeper than the real ones, as well as the length being shorter and the color being a lighter orange. The fakes also did not show ‘60R’ on the inside of the grip opening.

A buddy of mine just re-gripped this week with some MCC Plus-4's. He got them for like $4.50 each. I told him they are probably fake and he reminded me that I say that about all the golf stuff he buys off of EBay. I'm going to try to post a pic that he sent me.

Started a thread about this a couple weeks ago.  I’m positive I’ve bought fake grips on eBay. Surest sign. If the grips are less than half retail price they are fake. A legit seller can never sell grips for less than cost. The fakes will be from high feedback sellers with US locations but are often shipped from China.

Now what the difference?  It’s really hard to tell unless side by side. They even have the correct UPC codes and plastic on the caps.

But put them on and you can tell real easy. I have two clubs regripped around last year. One with a $10.50 MCC from Dicks and one with a $4 knockoff from eBay. Both clubs seen very limited action. The real grip basically feels new. The knockoff feels like it has been played for 5 seasons and was stored in a car trunk in Arizona between rounds. Night and day. The quality of the rubber is not even in the same category.

stay far away. You get what you pay for.

Is there any specific stamp on the inside of the grip? I have one from eBay and I thought it was legit but am second guessing. It says "Taiwan" and "Golf Pride P 10 60" stamped inside. I believe the ones installed on the shaft is (midsize and left) are real and the one on the right (standard) is in question

I told my buddy that his are fakes and he sent the seller a message saying so. The response is as follows:

The grips are Golf Pride OEM for this price. If they don't meet your expectations, I can cancel your order, offer you a return label and you can return the grips in their original condition for a full refund. Please let me know. Thanks.

I looked at grips for sell by this seller and none of the wording in his ads say "Golf Pride" although it is plainly on each grip in his pictures. I also was able to see the grips in person today and the ones in question are much lighter in color than mine and the seams are more noticeable. I'm not sure if the seller is lying about the grips being legit or if they are blemishes.

The thing most noticeable to me on the one on the right is the seam. Not sure about the inside label.

The cord is always what I notice, it has a completely different pattern and layout and is always what jumps out to me.

Fake per above, but it sounds like you've already addressed this.

These are all fakes:

1572939986_s-l1600(19).jpg.ee15fe0736ac70e6ac257f43e7a7e6a7.jpg1016322665_s-l1600(18).jpg.efd75eb048e25a00e2baf22877b32c45.jpg

It is especially noticeable on the green ones as you can see the very noticeably straight lines the cord is creating. You can count the strands.

1536014994_s-l1600(20).jpg.5b9d8c8580bf5fc87cd5da85b844312c.jpg1221528309_s-l1600(21).jpg.c1e942150fd1dd84698cdafe373da4fc.jpg

These are legit, much harder to count the individual strands, especially towards the middle of the grip. The cord layout appears much more random. This and the "too good to be true" pricing are the two things that give them away first if you can't smell them or compare them to legit ones.

I will add two things.

if you are having trouble telling if you have fakes, but usually the smell is the giveaway.

1) find a scale to weigh your grips. It’s usually too hard to get the fakes the proper weight for those who make them.

2) get a “upside down” view of the grip and notice how thin they are compared to a real grip.
