The Match in Montana - Phil/Tom vs Bryson/Aaron ***MERGED***

Quick follow-up items:

-According to Golf.com the Reserve At Moonlight Basin is $250/round.  Not cheap but not crippling.  The commute to get there might be spendy though.

-I promise to read the thread in full but did someone else mention Brady was in red, white and blue ie Patriots colors?  Granted, it was coming out of 4th of July weekend but.....

-I FF'd but what possible relevance above general star power, being sort-of-kin to Dustin Johnson or a possible charity angle did Wayne Gretzky have?

Perhaps a skins game would make events like this more interesting.

9-holes.

One hundred thousand dollars per hole. The players put up their own money (they can afford it.)

Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the team winners on top of the skins.  Their money also.

When money is involved, people get real serious, real quick.

To your second two comments:

- Not only wearing those colors, but his bag was the same as well (though primarily red, so I guess you could argue that some might think Bucs....until you see the blue).

- Gretzky has signed on to be an NHL analyst for the Turner network.  That was the connection.

Last night I watched half the event, (piss poor PoP) but thought most of it was entertaining.  Then there was Brady.  Let's call him Mr boring. I'll watch the rest of it tonight.  I would like to see an audit of where all the Charity funding goes, really.  But that's another issue.

If you happen to misjudge one, you can lose teeth, get a bloody nose or a jammed finger.  😖

I was surprised that they caught the ball on their own to be honest.  Whenever you see QBs warming up on the sideline they are throwing it to a someone else (probably a WR) then the ball gets handed over to the guy throwing it.  I was of the impression it was to prevent jamming a finger.

My family has donated a lot to the local food bank over the years, and things can sometimes sound skewed.

The broadcast stated how many meals for the hungry were generated.  Whatever number that might be, it is usually wildly inaccurate.  There are lots of ways to interpret $$ into food.  In theory, you could feed a person a meal for $1, and it would include a handful of rice and a few bulk veggies.

Is this realistic in practice?  Not really.

Lots of food-banks will say that your donation provides 'x' number of meals.  It really doesn't- not when you factor in transport, overhead, salaries, rent, etc...  Plus they use the Federal food cost allocation prices.  A few years ago, a couple senators tried to eat on that dispensation, and failed miserably.

Now I am in NO MEANS saying someone shouldn't donate or support this.  There is absolutely NO reason a child should go hungry in America.

All I'm saying, is that their numbers, while admirable, are bullsh*t.   Lots of charities are like this.

Phil's ability to get into a guy's head was great to watch & hear.  He had Bryson in the palm of his hand and could have gone deeper if he wanted to.

Playing Phil for cash in practice rounds must get interesting, but it's not for everyone.

Phil lost from what I heard so who's head did he get into ?

Trash talk in golf is a joke- no repercussions- no one throws a fast ball at your head, throws a stiff block, trips you up on the next play or slaps a ball back in your face

Watching now on DVR.

I guess these things are sort of like a telethon…the longer they’re on the air the more chances they have to run commercials and promote the charity. Makes sense. But man, they'd be so much more fun to watch if they were edited. There’s just so much wasted time.

Too lasy to look through and see if mentioned but they have to stop coming by up with ridiculously uneven teams in these matches.

Brady is an 8 handicap. Rodgers is a 3. Manning is a 4. Phil was at a major disadvantage both matches he played with Brady

On the flip side, Mickelson / Barkley vs Curry / Manning was the opposite. You had a tour pro and a perceived hack who had secretly transformed his golf game against a scratch and a 4. If we expected Barkley was a 30 at the it's still not a match. Especially considering his short game / putting ability was much better than his handicap. In actuality at the time of the match Chuck was probably a 20 at worst who was basically allowed to play from a tee back from the front tees probably making close to a 5 shot difference. He literally just had to hit 5 irons in play and let Phil read his putts for him all day.

The next edition of the match needs 2 evenly matched celebrities. Curry-Romo and Rodgers-Manning are both good suggestions.

If Tiger is healthy next year I'd prefer to see a pro only version were Tiger and Phil team up

I think a lot of people would watch Woods/Mickelson vs Spieth/Thomas.

These matches always demonstrate one thing... to be really great at golf, you need to be an athlete first and foremost.

Outside of that, it's a pure spectacle.

The first 6 or so holes were fun to watch, after that it became repetitive & stale real fast. That course reminds me of a goat track near me that closed down because it was tricked up and no one wanted to play it. I think Bryson lost like 6 balls or something, granted he was just showing off on each drive. 9 holes for the casual fan is good enough.

Next year I want to see a couple Tour players play in a NFL game. I watched a couple holes, and just wasn’t entertained.

Boy, great point.

But then again, isn't that what makes golf great?  The fact that pro's from other sports want to expose their game on TV with Tour Pro's tells me that golf is the ultimate jock challenge.

Watching both QB's hit shots was NOT exciting... Listening to the banter and team interaction made the show worth watching.  The course caught my eye too.  Except after checking it out, I am not interested in spending 800k-2M for a house on ANY course for limited 4 season play.  Nice place though.

I actually preferred watching the QBs hit to the pros. More of an element of surprise regarding what you're gonna get, and always the chance they hit a better shot than the pro.

I respectfully submit that those who own property there also have property elsewhere and travel where the weather is conducive to their desired activity - to golf, to skiing, to boating, etc.

I think the telecast or this thread mentioned that Brady has a house there.

Yes, it was mentioned, and I do similar.  I have multiple homes but in places where I can play golf and or be on the ocean and fish.  My point was, cost of homeownership there just for a few months of golf doesn't interest me.
