Polos vs. t-shirts on the course

Couldn’t care less what others wear. Always a polo shirt for me. I like to try and look as smart as I can.

I think wearing a t-shirt is more appropriate than using an armlock putter.

Was at Goodwill yesterday.  Polo shirts were $4.99 and they didn't have many.

100 years ago dudes played golf in 3-piece wool suits.  Give it time.  Polos will remain the standard on tour but at munis, t-shirts will likely become the norm in less than 10 years.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that dress codes don't serve the purpose most of their defenders think they serve. "You act how you're dressed" simply isn't true; the world if full of a-holes in custom suits and great people who dress like slobs. You'd have a hard time convincing me that someone loves and respects the game more if they wear a collar on their shirt than if they don't.

 

It also makes no sense to me that I could put on a ratty, worn-out, sweat-stained polo that I found in a ditch and be in compliance with my course's dress code, but if I showed up in a brand-new, well fitting athletic t-shirt I'm not. I respect their right to make such a rule, but I still think it's daft.

Could care less about the old rules, the youth movement, whatever anyone has for a reason for or against tee shirts. I have a small head and look much better in crew neck style shirts and my vanity will forever have me for tee shirts on the course.

I’m in the camp of live and let live. 
 

as long as it’s not offensive (holes in the shirts, blatant disregard of maintenance and hygiene, etc) I’m cool with it. 
 

I play in Nike training shoes. I haven’t noticed a performance difference and they don’t beat up my feet. I had a player I was paired up with saying my shoes weren’t “golf appropriate “. They were clean, but no spikes. 
 

I told him that I forgot my actual “golf shoes”. He said something under his breath. 
 

later on in the round , I raked a bunker that he “forgot” to rake himself.  I told him that you should rake your own bunkers in the future. 
 

Moral of the story: respect the game, course and players on the course. Otherwise, whatever.

I was a guest at LACC on vacation and the host had to bring me a pair of slacks.  They were pink with flamingos on them!

Funny story, me and some friends went to a local course a few years back and one friend was wearing a T Shirt.  We went into the pro shop to pay, this wasn’t a high end course but they had a dress code.  We went in and said we are here to play and the guy in the shop looked at my buddy and said “not like that you’re not, you need a collared shirt.”  So we went back to our cars wondering if one of us had a spare shirt.  My buddy at the time had some of his GFs maternity clothes in his car and found a maternity shirt with a collar.  So he threw it on over his shirt and in we went.  The guy in the shop gave us a funny look but let us play with no more questions.  
 

All that is to say, I agree.  Dress codes often don’t have the intended affect they are going for.

A target polo is cheaper than a SUPREME t-shirt. It’s not a money thing.

Most muni’s I play have pretty relaxed dress codes. One of the busiest courses in the Midwest, which is city owned and down the street from my house has this dress code posted.  It has a huge junior program, 27 holes and a par 3 course.  practice area with junior clinics and women’s leagues. It literally goes out of its way to get young people involved in 1st Tee etc. part of learning the game is etiquette, part of etiquette is dressing appropriate.  That being said the code is not very restrictive and most courses I play at aren’t as restrictive as they were say 20 years ago.  An untucked shirt won’t get you kicked out of most courses anymore.  

 

Proper golf attire must be worn at all times. Bathing attire, tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, mesh shirts, short shorts, muscle shirts and dress of similar nature is inappropriate.

Nonmetal spikes or smooth soled tennis shoes will be allowed. The Golf Professionals may at their discretion allow various other types of golf shoes.

I'd like to see tennis attire allowed, including on tour. It seems like a good medium where you still look nice, but you're dressed like an athlete in athletic appropriate clothes, and it's a more widely accessible/agreeable aesthetic.

I wore t shirts and mesh shorts or jeans and a hoodie when I started playing.  At the muni's I played the guys that showed up with polo's, slacks, visors with the divot tool clipped to them...  couldn't play for s***.  You could say that about most people though.

 

Now I wear polo's in the summer and t shirts and a pullover in the winter.  In the summer lightweight golf apparel is more comfortable.

I tend to not play places that have a dress code because I'm usually not dressed for it. 🤣 

 

I play golf often before work and if I came into work in pantaloons, I'd be laughed at.

My club is ok with blade collars or Henley shirts, they ask they be tucked in. The more heavy… guys start out tucked in but can’t really keep any shirt tucked very long. Doesn’t seem to be a problem.  If my club made a rule I couldn’t live with I would just go somewhere that suited me better.

Same, I don't get the old grumpy man obsession with how other men are dressed.  Guess I'm just not that into or concerned with what other men look like.

 

It's also not like hoodies and t shirts are crop tops and booty shorts.  They cover everything and are perfectly acceptable articles of clothing in almost every business in america...name me another place of business that wont allow hoodies and t shirts to be worn (i'm not talking about your office as an employee, talking about places the general public visits).

What is point of a polo collar anyways?  Seriously why?   Clothes are functional.  Dress code is just a way to make judgments on someone based on preconceived stereotypes.  Go to a poor church with no dress code, are they more unruly than a metro Episcopal church?  No but assumptions are made based on dress.

Several years ago he was asked to leave a course for wearing cargos. I think a member reported him, and some poor guy had to ride out, and ask him to either comply to the dress code, or leave.

<edit> I just love how this look is legit but some tan cargo shorts and a white tshirt are out of the question. 🤣

I believe he's been kicked out of a club or two as well.  Considering there is a club on Long Island(can't recall which) said no thanks when Tom Watson and Payne Stewart called asking if they could play there, the hero worship doesn't go so far at some places.

I will firstly say, whoever owns the course makes the rules.  Just like if a guy said you need to wear a kimono to enter his house, you either do so or don't go in, but you don't tell him to change his rule.

 

Personally, though, I'm a supporter of collars, more importantly tucked in.  The guys who I see with the shirt tails out tend to be beer bellied, and frankly it looks so trashy.  But maybe I'm just being a curmudgeon.

 

As far as dress code and "keeping people out", no.  That's just an excuse that gets used.  There may well be a large number of kids/people not playing for various reasons, but very few of them are out due to the dress codes.
