RIP Byron Morgan

Sad news.  Anyone remember the Golfwrx Club Byron?  I still have that beautiful "1st Made" 007 Club Byron putter with the cool face finish - starlight or something?  Also the leather grip and a couple of headcovers he threw in.

 

I always meant to get one of the heel shafted Da Kine putters but never got around to it.

Same here. I'm heading to Arizona for Christmas to visit my parents and I'm going to take my DH-89 and leave the tour Scotty Cameron at home. I might make the change permanent.

 

 

*the season is over where I live so I can't play with it this weekend.

It's shame PutterTalk is defunct. I'd love to go over there and look at all the beautiful Byron Morgan putters that were made through the years.

I was just talking with a customer about my original 007 Club Byron putter, about 30 minutes ago.  The story was more about how "out of his way" Byron went to make sure I could own one.  The man was a giant in my eyes and will be missed on a daily basis.

Yeah - he just seemed to like to make putters for people and enjoyed seeing us use them.

I’ve owned five or six Byron Morgan putters, four were custom made for me.  I only have two in my possession now.  Both are gamers.  I’ve only used a Byron putter now a little more for the past 7 years.  I love them both.  I won’t be replacing my gamers any time soon, maybe never.  I just putt too well with them and now there’s even greater sentimental meaning with them.

I am very sorry to hear this news.  I was fortunate enough to meet him and golf with him a few times.  One of the nicest people I ever met.  I will miss him.

I hope one of the writers on staff here can do a special bio/tribute write up article on the man. So much of his work and character have been discussed in these forums, that it seems only fitting that such a huge influence/topic of discussion on the GolfWRX community should be honored and remembered this way. As a pillar and pioneer of the putter world, Byron surely deserves a front page story.

What sad news! A huge loss to the golf industry. Byron Morgans are by far my favorite putters. I own four of them and daily I shop to try to add to my collection. He and his artistry will be missed.

I knew Byron was sick and that things were not looking good, but I tried to keep a positive outlook.  He was such a great guy and full of life.  I was hoping for the best but feared for the worst.
What a loss to the putter community.  He was such a talented craftsman, a huge influence to so many and just an all around great guy.  He will be greatly missed.
My condolences to Sally and his family.  Rest in peace Byron.  You have lots of golf to play up there buddy.

Got my DH89 as a graduation present from my parents after college. The whole college thing was a horrible experience for me but the putter is the only thing from that period that I look back to fondly and dont think I will ever switch it out. The whole experience of getting it was very much like dealing with a couple of people who were just doing what they loved out of a garage or something. the continuous emailing back and forth to discuss all the options, they sent me the wrong headcover but I didnt care. In current society having someone make something for you is just a very special experience even if its a petty thing like a putter. It's sad that such a person is lost but hopefuly he inspired many others to continue this craft.

My heart is broken to hear this news today.  Byron was a great human!  I was fortunate to live close to his shop in HB and would always walk-in to pick up my sticks.  Every time he would stop whatever he was in the middle of, pull my new stick and walk me through the details of building it, get me to roll and few and make sure it was exactly what I wanted.  We weren't personal friends, but he could make you feel like you've known him for years.  He loved his family and would talk about baseball and his grandson often.  My heart goes out to his Surfer Sally and the rest of his family.  

 

In the golf world, we lost a piece of history with Byron.  His stories of the beginning of the boutique putter world should continue to be passed on so that those coming to this crazy space we occupy will know who Byron Morgan was and the place he holds in this story.  His DH89 will forever be a milestone in the evolution of the Dalehead.

Byron Morgan was a true craftsman who had an amazing amount of knowledge of golf putting and putters. Many pros have taken advantage of his skill at making the custom putter you want. He will be missed as will his knowledge and dedication to excellence. I've had the privilege to have owned 4 Byron Morgan putters, all hand finished with his amazing Tai treatment and the one I have left will never leave me.

Hate hearing news like this.  Sad indeed.  I never had a putter made by him, but came very close last year.  We spoke over the phone for about 15 min working through some of the details, but life happened and it never came to fruition.

 

Over the course of the 15 min call, you could immediately tell how genuine of a man he was that was family oriented.  Didn’t he move to Georgia recently to be closer to his grandkids?  I feel sad for his loved ones.  Always hard to lose the good ones!  RIP!

I just heard the news tonight, and I’ve been sad ever since. I have owned probably 12-15 of Byron’s putters over the years, and finally had him build me a custom B-17 around this time two years ago. I still use that putter as my gamer, and I’ll never sell it. I also have a 007x with a similar neck and a finish I don’t care about as much for sandy greens. I didn’t talk to Byron directly for my build, so I didn’t know him personally, but you can see the care he put into his flatsticks, and I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about him, so he was the kind of guy that the world will miss. It’s weird to feel this affected about the loss of someone you don’t even know personally, but in the community of people who appreciate the combination of golf performance and awesome craftsmanship, it sucks to know that he’s not around anymore. RIP

As great of a putter designer and craftsman he was even better as a person.  I'm fortunate to have become friends with Byron.  We will all miss him in our own ways and yes, he will be missed in the world.

Indeed, very sad news. I still have his Channel Island and I was lucky to get a couple of head covers signed as well. He was such a gentleman and I really enjoyed times I was in his shop & talking and oogling at all his creations.

 

I feel like an era has passed and I will cherish & enjoy his work forever.

I'm honored that I was able to meet him multiple times at his shop in HB and made 8 custom putters which I still own all.

He was always great to listen to my request and executed professionally. 

I can't thank him more for what he's done for me.

It is sad to lose him in golf industry and he will be remembered by many of us.

Very sad. I briefly owned a #'d to 20 Captain Morgan dark mystic pearl finish back in like 2009? While I quickly learned I am not a fan of the feel of carbon putters, I did appreciate his craftsmanship.

 

I have a very good memory and always feel at a loss when a course closes and I can never again play holes I remember hitting good shots on. While Byron may be gone, his putters will live on as a testament to his dedication to excellence and his creative genius in crafting flatsticks with style. Perhaps I will find a one of his creations in my bag in the future.

I remember hearing about Byron Morgan on Puttertalk several years ago.  I really admired his style and wanted a DH89 in the worst way.  Not buying a DH89 from Byron Morgan is one of the few regrets I have in golf.  I always thought his tuna milling looked so good in pictures.  I'm sure it looked even better in person.

I absolutely love my DH89 and love the Tuna milling.  Great soft feel I love in a putter.

He definitely made some great putters, and I agree, that tuna milling is really cool! Such a true artist, I will sure miss seeing new creative stuff coming out of his shop.
