The one club that's changed your game

Vater

The Cleveland Halo Hy-wood. It's 18* of pure magic.  I hit my 4H 200 yards.  My 4 and 5 woods were always hit and hope from the deck. For every shot I hit on the screws, I'd hit 2-3 other shots that were big pushes, tops, etc. Unless things were wide open, I was very hesitant to hit anything longer than my 4H.

The Hy-wood changed that.  It hits high soft shots that go 220-225 yards. It's as easy to hit as a 7-iron off the tee or the deck. I have no fear of pulling it out to go for a green (or close to it) in 2. My par 5 soring dropped almost .5 a stroke.  It's rare to find a club that extends your usable range at the top of the bag that you completely trust.

Got a crack in my Epic Max head which I had been hitting well and Callaway won't warranty now. I ended up getting  an GBB Epic 10.5 and then putting the Hzardous 60s from the Max in it. I cut it to a hair under 45" and added tape to weight to bring swingweight up. Was in the best positions I could have possibly been in on all 4 par 5's last round, went for all in 2. Flared a couple out right and they were barely in right rough with at least 80-85% distances. As long as I don't yank it left, this is the grail.

1. Doing a proper putter fitting. It confirmed some things I thought I knew about my putting stroke/ideal set up, but surprised me on some others. Haven't bagged another putter for 4 years now (with the exception of 1 round while I was waiting for a new grip to dry on my fitted putter).

2. Callaway PM grind lob wedge. I know a lot of people think it is ugly or gimmicky. But I have so much confidence with this club. Can use it for basically any shot around the greens. Stupid Phil had to go and get himself in trouble, was really waiting for the 3.0 version

40 years ago it was the Pittsburgh Persimmon.

The next breakthrough was the R510TP.

Recently switching to MMT iron shafts has monumentally changed my golfing life.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I had an off the shelf Cobra Radspeed 3 Wood with a HZRDUS Blue shaft. I hit it decent when on the screws but overall it was not a confidence inducing club.

Went and got properly fit and ended up with a Ping G425 Max with a ventus Black and the sense of confidence this thing provides is unbelievable. Whatever shot I need to hit with it I can and it's 20 yards longer carry than my Max out of distance with the Radspeed when I want it to be.

It changed the way I go in to long Par 5's or tight driving holes.

My Bird of Prey putter that I picked up last year. Been playing with a #9 type putter forever because it just suited my eye, but being a bit of a sci-fi geek, bought a Bird of Prey for fun. Haven't looked back....

Haven't replaced the driver yet or I'd likely go with that, so I'll say CBX wedges.  I struggled with longer approach/pitch shots using bladed wedges, and the lighter weight/forgiveness of the CBX helped me find more success with partial swings and distance control.  They're also rock solid bunker clubs, and I'm no less effective around the greens.

No specific club, but learning to "hit down" with my irons completely revolutionized my game... Thanks YouTube

Putter fitting and then getting the Evnroll that fit the squareback profile. I felt like I changed putters every year until then, different styles/balance points etc... Locking on a headshape that works for me and getting a great putter means I have one club I just don't need to worry about.

Just about what I would type.

Moved from 24" blade to 33" mallet after fitting. Was always a decent putter, but making a lot more putts outside 10-15 feet and missing a lot fewer short ones.

Also, my 58* PM '19 PM Grind is magical around the greens. oled more pitches and chips the past two years than I had in a long time.

I picked up a 816H2 hybrid second hand (eBay), it came with a tiny sky mark on the far part of the toe (honestly wasn't me). The shaft is 1/4 inch longer that standard, again as it came not something I would be fitted to.

It just fits perfectly between my 4 iron and 3 wood. Down wind I can tee it up and it just goes, into wind is no problem. Having a club so versatile in that slot has been great.

Regular flex shafts in my clubs.  My SS falls well within a stiff flex shaft but the way I load seems to fit a regular flex better.  Getting over that ego hump really opened a new world for me.

Interesting, my swing speed in the high end regular low end stiff and I usually play regular flex. I don't really feel like driver is a problem at regular but I tend to pull my irons a lot.  Wondering if going to stiff might help, I know it's more likely me than anything, but something I'll look at when I eventually get the fitting I won.

I'm tempted to say Golden Ram Tour Grinds on principle, since I'm one of the few flag wavers for that brand these days, but the best answer is a bit different.

It's one specific driver from my past.  A KZG MP driver I bought from 2nd Swing, used, probably in 2000 or 2001.  I'd been having tee game trouble (a LOT of trouble), playing the usual UL shafted stuff available at the time, and thought this club was interesting.  Made an incredible difference in my tee game.

The reason had nothing to do with the clubhead.  It was purely due to the shaft.  It was a Composite Dynamics HP/M Tour shaft.  No flex label, no weight indication.  I knew it was a bit stiffer and heavier, and that's all I cared about.

Found the shaft label sticker under the grip, when I regripped it that next winter.  It was 107g (or so), and the flex was 2X.

Made me truly realize that lighter wasn't good for me, or club lengths > 44" or 44.25", and I've been wallowing in heavier/shorter shafts since, until aging/injury has started catching up with me.

One length 4 hybrid. A 37" 20* hybrid that I basically never miss with. For the record, I don't play one length irons, I just liked the idea of a very controllable and safe tee club for narrow holes and this fits the bill.

That’s funny.  My Ping G410 3H is the club that changed my game.  Easy to hit, won’t go left in the flat setting and has plenty of height but doesn’t balloon up into the wind like a 7 wood.  I’m a high ball hitter and not a great FW wood player though.

Mine would be the g410 4H.  I'm far more consistent with the shorter shaft of a hybrid than with a fairway.  For the 5-10 yards I lose not having a fairway, it's worth it to be in the fairway.
