The one club that's changed your game

What's the one club you experimented with that made the biggest positive change in your game?

 

My shortlist:

- The Recoil shaft in my 4 iron

- Changing from a mallet to a blade putter

- Replacing my 3W with a 5W

 

But the winner is: Going from a 2016 M2 with a hzrdus shaft to a SIM Max with a ventus red. Big increase in fairways, better launch, and ability to shape the shot.

I keep hearing about how much people like their 7 woods that I'm tempted to try one. I like my 5 wood so much, it makes sense to have a similar club for shorter distances.

For years 200-210 was a weakness in my game. I’ve lost count how many great shots and birdies I’ve made with my 7 wd. Literally made 200+Yd  par 3s so much easier.

9 wood. Instead of hooking the piss out of a 4H or hitting a terrible 4iron, I can easily hit greens from 185-200 out. It's like a damn cheat code.

Putting a 52 deg Gap Wedge and taking out the Lob Wedge.  Was sick and tired of making partial shots with my PW from 90-100 yards so I took out my lob wedge and put in GW.  So anything from 90-95 yards is an automatic full swing GW to me.  I don't miss my lob wedge one bit.  I have all the loft I want by simply opening the face with my SW.

That’s funny.  My Ping G410 3H is the club that changed my game.  Easy to hit, won’t go left in the flat setting and has plenty of height but doesn’t balloon up into the wind like a 7 wood.  I’m a high ball hitter and not a great FW wood player though.

Playing the same ball round after round has helped my short game and distances the most. I settled on pro v but could probably get similar results if I played the same ball over and over again to know what to expect with the ball. 
 

other than that the LAGP AXS Blue 6x in the sim and now rogue triple diamond has helped me hit significantly more fairways and manageable misses.

Time will tell, but subtracting the driver seems to have worked wonders. I tried this during my last round and I at least wasn’t looking for my tee shot in the woods after every drive.

Yeah, I’m this boat. There is no way I could hit my 4 iron or hybrid as consistently as I do with the 9W. 185-200 yards out used to cause anxiety now I welcome that distance.

I bought my first ever upcharge shaft last year, a Ventus Blue Velocore. Driver use to be my worst club, now its one of my best.

Not a club, and very subtle, but stopped playing driver at >45”. I gave up some yards but being able to hit the center of the club and the fairway more was way worth it. No need to play “standard” length woods since most pros don’t.

Learning how to hit a driver well has led to the greatest improvement in my game and scores.

This is part of why my driver is the winner for biggest positive change for me. I’m playing it at 44”. I was surprised to learn that longer driver shafts off the shelf are a result of chasing stats to put into marketing, kind of like jacked lofts in irons.

Regular flex shafts in my clubs.  My SS falls well within a stiff flex shaft but the way I load seems to fit a regular flex better.  Getting over that ego hump really opened a new world for me.

The day I realized it wasn't the clubs holding me back, it was my (lack of) skill.

Lol, I literally took out my g410 3H to put the g410 7 wood in. I’ve since went to g425max 7wd. The hybrid was a good club, but the 7wd is like cheating for me, but I have mid traj.

I think the low bounce K-grind has probably had the most tangible difference in terms of actual play for me. Just suits my game and delivery to the point that I don't have to think about what the wedge is going to do and I can focus on the shot itself.

My putter. Not a specific putter per sey, but rather learning how to putt and be consistent and confident over putts. 
 

I put hours upon hours of work into my putting and have never once regretted it.

Replacing my 3W with a 5W.  It got to the point I would not even hit the 3W on the course, especially off the fairway.  Now I am getting more comfortable with the 5W.  It has been helpful on par fives.

Getting a ping 400 max cut down an inch and replacing the weight in the back with a heavier weight. Hello fairway finder

Do yourself a favor and get you one of those 7woods. I carry both 5 & 7 woods. All g425

Hard to identify 1 thing, but a more modern move I made that has helped me tremendously is also the move to a 7 wood.  It’s become a weapon in ways I’ve never thought possible.

 

Also, this is not WRX worthy, but sticking to my bag set up for longer than 10 minutes has helped a ton!  Getting intimate with my setup and allowing my game to get more and more comfortable with equipment.  Outside of small tweaks here and there, that is my commitment I made to myself the middle of last season to this season.  So far, so good.  That’s one of the biggest differences in my improvement and it’s showing.

That’s my plan going forward is to keep my clubs the same for a long time and settle in with them. It is going to be hard to resist the temptation of something new and shiny. But I am going to try!!

trimming my driver to 44.5 and lofting up to 10.5

cutting down my 3w to 42.5.

replacing 4 and 5 irons with driving irons

replacing #2 and #3 driving irons with one hybrid 19*

adding a gap wedge from the set instead of a wedge wedge

 

these are what really helped my game.
