"Older" Irons you've always wanted to get your hands on?

Recommended Posts

Wanted to start a thread for people to lament the iron sets that they've always wanted to play, but have never been able to get their hands on.  Would love to hear from others about irons that they've always wanted to try/buy, and would love to hear feedback on the ones I've got my eye on (worth it?)

I'll be the first to admit I'm not the oldest out there and I haven't been playing as long as others who are gonna chime in, but my list is my list.  These may not be the "best of all time" type sets, but they're ones that have just caught my eye/interest for one reason or another.   With that said, here are my definitive rankings of the irons I hope to one day find a great deal on...

1. Taylormade RAC TP ('05/06) - I'd love to build a combo set with the CB/MBs

2. Taylormade 300 series forged irons - tough to find in good shape

3. Ping Eye 2+ BeCu - just so expensive on the secondary market

4. Hogan Apexes (want to build a "legacy set", where each iron is from a different year/model)

5. Mizunos (I'd love to play the T Zoid Pros or do a combo MX-MP set)

6. Lynx Liberty 76s, just for the heck of it

So, what's on your list?

I don't have a list, but after selling a set of Hogan Apex Plus that I had good success with and then later sold following a back injury, I now have a set of Apex Edge Pros to try with the same Apex 3 shafts.  I'm looking forward to playing an early 2000 period bag this season.  Not exactly vintage, but getting closer every year...😏

Hah.  Those are the irons that I mainly use, as well.  I have nothing but nice things to say about them.  Hope they bring you your most enjoyable season yet!

Since most people consider me a relic.......all the irons I've owned and played probably fall into this category.  🤣

Cleveland Tour Action 1 Irons in Gunmetal finish. Just super clean looking. Also Bridgestone Tour B200 MBs. Of course, I would have to up my strike location a *bit* to utilize those.

Those B200s look really slick, but boy do they run at a premium price.

I owned three sets of these irons in the past. They were excellent. Soft at impact, workable, forgiving for there size, and strangely longer than some GI irons. Mostly overlooked because they were made by Cobra. As a lefty, its hard to do better than MP 68s, 588CBs, 690.MBs,and S3 Pros.

Bridgestone J40 Blades.

There were a few sets made for their Tour Pros and having seen them in person, I'd love a chance to see how they'd work for me.

Miura MB-001

The best feeling and performing Miura blades offered to the public. If I could find some NOS 001's, they'd go in the bag immediately.

Tourstage Z-101

My favorite irons and best combination of feel and performance ever. I still have a set on hand but would buy a NOS set in a heartbeat.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Ping Eye 2+ BeCu. Ram TW276. Nike Miura Split Cavity. Early 80s Aussie Blades. Mizuno MS1, MS3 and Pro Originals from 1982/3.

I've got a set (3i-PW) of the Pro Originals in the bag right now. Got them late last year and they're already among my favourites.

I've got the MS-1s as well (very easy to find where I am), and they're pretty good too, though the shafts are on the short side for me and the SW doesn't work at all for me in the bunkers.

I've been feverishly searching thrift shops and secondhand stores for a set of late-90s Callaway Big Berthas.  Those are the first irons that I was aware of as a brand name or a product.

Secondarily?

Ping Zing 2's (had a set from a WRX'er that I passed along to another golfer who was getting back into it), Taylor Made Firesoles, Nike Slingshots.

What's In The Bag?

Srixon Z565 Driver, 4W, 4H

Ping G400 5-U

Kirkland Sig Wedges

Odyssey White Hot Putter

Hyundai Equus Alignment Sticks

KSig balls for now - in search of something new

My first "Oh I want those" was a set of Ping Zing 2s. I had just spent some time striping one of my buddies 1 irons from that set and wanted the rest to replace the crappy cast blades I had picked up as a first set.

Then the big one was Accuform PTMs - I somehow ended up with 3 sets of them.

Now I'm on the hunt for a cheap-ish set of Bird-on-ball Spaldings, there's various models but I did have my eyes on the Shark blades. This was sparked by a set of custom built Spalding Professionals that I picked up for 10$... minus the 9 iron 😒

I had a set of tourney custom 985s in the late 70s, but always wanted the tommy armour 985s, the last edition mid late 60s.  Not that I could hit either........Hogan directors or producer also comes to mind.  Clubs I saw as a kid caddy.  And H&b citations from that era, stainless steel.

Right?  Why do I need to drop $2000 on a new set when all these great forged irons of yesteryear are just lying around?

I'm really enjoying the Macgregor JNP's.  Being forged though, I don't want to wear them out so I play them less often than I would like.

Big fan of the Eye 2's obviously.  Love the durability, the shape (I'm the rare one who prefers the 2 to the 2+) and still game the W as a 50 degree regardless of what other iron set I have in the bag.

I'm curious about how stiff Graphite shafts play in the Eye 2 heads. So, that's what I'm keeping an eye on.

Actually own a lot of the sets I always wanted, my wife thinks I'm nuts,  lol.

I would still take Titleist T "red stamp". The made for JDM version by Miura.

Hogan Precisions, or the Sunburst's.

Would love Maxfli Revolution Black

OG Nike blades,. saw a brand new set for $700 a few years back, ugh.

Founders 200 too.
