It's up in your face marketing: the golf industry dismisses him so he comes up with something that is contrary to everything now being taught, and he's not even a golf pro!

One of my favorite swings on Tour ever.  Might have been the closest thing to "The Natural" in golf.  Didn't seem to matter if he had played yesterday or 3 months ago.

When I started getting into golf, Hale Irwin was the Tiger Woods of the then-Senior Tour.  He seemed to win everything.

IMO its one of those evils that is only evil if it exists for the wrong reason. There are a number of guys out there right now that are MORE over the top, guys like Hovland and Ancer, who are clearly pretty elite players. If you're OTT as a compensation due to mechanical flaws then you're going to have a bad time, but if you're OTT purely as means to get the club on a good plane and everything else is mechanically sound then you can clearly play at the highest level. 

As for the Christo guy, he has a nice a swing and the classic horribly irresponsible social media marketing approach of using massive hyperbolic claims. He is figuring things out for himself and selling them as solutions to everyone and is speaking with enough bravado that people will believe. It might help some folks and it will be terrible for others for reasons any qualified person could likely write a short story about.

Excellent description.  Let's be honest, this clown tries to dress like Hogan and has promoted the "Hogan" swing forever.  Now his "explosive, revelatory" revelation is to swing OTT?

(And I have a relative who experienced gruff and not so personable Hale just a couple years, ago, lol —- and would contrast that with a super positive interaction on two occasions with Ernie Els, who remembered him a year later when seeing him again).

I read an article years and years ago that quoted a couple of players - I can’t remember who - who just didn’t enjoy Hale’s company.  The gist was that he was a whiner.  Seems he felt he always got the bad bounce, the bad lie, the bad gust, the bad ruling; like the universe was conspiring against him.  The Patrick Reed of the 70s and 80s.

Well yes, not the most personable guy ... golf was a business to him  just a way to make a living 

 

Great story ;

Mark O’Meara was in his rookie year and was paired with Irwin in final group on final day. O’Meara played terrible that day and was walking up the 18th and said to Irwin “ Hey, sorry I played so poorly today, Hale “  Irwin looks at him and says “ The sooner you figure out I don’t give a f*** how you play ... the better off you will be out here “ and kept walking.
