Ordered i230 with KBS Tour X shaft and shipping direct to @JustinD. I ended up purchasing Modus 120X shafts through him and he'll build the club to the D1/D2 spec I'm looking for and I'll just sell off the KBS shafts on my own.

Ping did mention they may get the Modus 120 back but had zero estimation in regards to timeline on that and based on Ping's timeline track record, I just went ahead and ordered the shafts on my own.

Does anyone have any thoughts on which of the following iron shafts -- available with the i230s; that's why it's just this list -- would be (on a robot; I know everybody's delivery is different) the lowest-launching and lowest-spinning?

-- Recoil Dart 105 F5

-- Mitsubishi MMT 105S

-- Aerotech Steelfiber i110S

-- Aerotech Steelfiber FC115 F4

I have hit all of them before but don't have anyplace nearby that stocks them all, where I could hit them all at the same time.

The set is progressively heavier, D2 on long irons, D4 short.

I have glide4 wedges coming which will get a similar treatment.

looks awesome! did you order them with that weight preference?

I had them built for me by a friend and I told him what swing weights I wanted. I tend to pull short irons and push long irons. Ping won't install custom ferrules or swing weight anything other than whatever stock is.

Head weights were all over the map and I've got tons of lead tape on these. I even have them +3/8".

Have not hit the recoil…. But heard they play a touch soft compare to SF…. I have the recoil 125 f4 I am waiting to shaft up …..

I have tried the others, from lowest / spin to highest

i110s

mmt 105s / recoil 105 in F5, the F4 would be closer to the FC115 by my research.

FC115

the FC115 short irons will play similar to the i110s, but the longer irons will have the lower kick point and play a little higher launch… the i110s tend to be a little stiff to flex.

hope this helps.

I can tell you that the MMT 105TX is similar to the Dart 105 F4. The ones you list will be miles apart in stiffness.

I230's showed up yesterday, almost exactly 4 weeks since I ordered them.  Clubs look amazing and love that the stock Ping Cord grips (midsize) are actually tour velvet cords.  Hopefully they'll make it though the summer before I have to give them the zcord treatment.

Played a few more rounds with my new i230s.  I find myself hitting a few more fat shots then I ever do.  It's almost like a huge clunk with a hard left miss.  Not a shot I normally ever hit.  Not sure if the heel is digging in and I'm having trouble getting through the turf?  Maybe I need a flatter lie adjustment?

I thought I was alone in this. I think it's just a bigger head than I'm used to, and you have to get the bottom of the arc accurately more so than a blade, etc.

I will say, try bending them flat.  I had somewhat of a similar issue with mine and I bent them flat and am finding the strikes to be a lot more pure feeling as well as less of a left miss.  I find I play the red dots a bit better but fit into std lie on just about every other brand.  Try bending them a little bit flat.

I personally like the KBS tour 130x over the Modus. Got them in 2weeks. Have a few rounds on them and they are great. Definitely fly high and straight.

I second this. Although my miss is different (thin because I'm more of a sweeper), I tend to generally strike irons more purely in a flat setting and avoid overdrawing them. I'm relatively tall (6'2") with long arms, which would fit me into slightly upright irons statically, but all fittings concluded with lie angles anywhere between standard to 2 flat (depending on the iron).

I haven't been fitted for the i230s but decided to order them in the red dot setting and bend them back to std or -2 if needed. Will report back once I received mine and took them to the range.

From what you described, I am not sure that lie angle is the sole (no pun intended) culprit.  Chunking the ball, as you described, sounds more like swing mechanics OR the length  for the i230 are not quite where they need to be.  If the heel was hitting the ground first, it would indeed promote a draw, but unless it was wildly off spec, should not result in a hard left miss.

That said, having played Eye 2, Zing, Zing2, i20, ie1, and i200’s previously, the i230’s seem to be a bit more touchy in the fitting department then previous irons.  I have my specs dialed in, but I should have (and probably will have done) a 1* adjustment in lie, moving flatter.  Even without that tweak, they have been very accurate for me, more so than any iron since the ie1.

I’m a couple rounds in now and loving so much about these i230’s. One of my favorite things so far is the turf interaction. I have the 5-UW and I want to replicate a similar turf interaction in other wedges—what soles (thickness, shape, grind, bounce) would be most similar to these i230’s?

I fear going +1, my usual lie angle, and go black coding with Pings, which is in line with other +1 brands.

Having said that, I would have someone check the lie angles. On my i59's, Artisan checked them and they were off by +1 and more. Lofts were off, too.

Ping has a reputation for precision that they do not deserve in my experience. Check and adjust loft and lie.

My i230's come in tomorrow. I will drive them to Artisan in a week or so.

When Steelfibers were the only decent graphite shaft around 2002 I went with them. But so many more choices now. Ping offers Dart 90 Tapers and my set that just arrived has them.

These were requested at black dot lie, power spec lofts, and I put No1 grips on them. D2 is stock - I will have them checked and if needed, adjusted. They won't look as pretty with lead tape if needed.

Hit them, like them, not expecting miracles, just consistency.

Billy Bobs have different toe weights if the sw is off , instead of adding lead tape. Little extra cost but but would be worth it vs lead tape.
