LIV Tour Discussion Thread (*** NO POLITICS ***)

The problem for LIV is that it’s turning out that an elite golfer is like a new car

As soon as you drive it off the PGA Tour parking lot

Its value plummets ; )

Serious Question: LIV currently has two of the reigning major championship winners. If two of the current LIV players win two of the next four majors wouldn't that make them the Premier golf tour?

Merger idea:

The LIV tour is shut down. Everyone goes to the PGA. PIF gets to invest/buy in PGA.
All LIV players who, prior to joining LIV, had a PGA card get to rejoin PGA.

The PGA reschedules, removing the smaller tournaments. There are max 20 tournaments/year. All tournaments have 80 players. There is no cut. Basically, all tournaments are lite todays elevated.

All types of "categories" to enter tournaments are removed. Instead, entrance is based soley on fedex ranking.

To allow new players, the top 5 on korn ferry ranking gets to play the pga next year. Also, the top 5 on NCAA gets a pga-card.

Also, the players should NOT own the tour. Why? Because they seem to have no idea what the fans want. It's better to run it as a normal for-profit corporation for longevity.

Neither Monahan nor Norman gets to run the new PGA. Must be someone new.

Serious answer….no. It would just mean their little exhibition tour has two of the premier players.

The best tour is not the one with the two or four best players but rather the one with the best roster top to bottom.

I will compare it this way….was the 1945 PGA Tour a better tour than today?  Definitely not imo.

I'd think the premier golf tour would have the most viewers and highest attendance at tournaments.

It's all about the fans, if the fans don't watch it doesn't matter what the quality of players is because it's not getting eyes on it.

Tuned in for a few hours today as I wasn’t vibing the Valero. Nothing spectacular kind of had the quiet lustre that of a LPGA event.

Dig into the actual PGAT vs. LIV trends and a different story starts to emerge.

Youtube searches demonstrates enormous spikes in interest for every LIV event. PGAT results while steady, fall embarrassingly short of the start up exhibition league.

ScreenShot2024-04-05at9_11_57AM.png.01c1a8be513139c7fc0342375c3faa71.png

News searches reiterate a similar trend. People are searching out news about LIV that rivals what the established 50+ year old institution is driving. For whatever reason, folks are searching out LIV content, and it seems AK's addition did result in a pop of interest.

ScreenShot2024-04-05at9_12_16AM.png.af35eabcf3542b1007057ab34f3ef0ea.png

People don't search You tube for the PGAT.  Nice try though Jack

Saw Poulter out of the corner of my eye in his outfit and the first thought was Nelly Korda. How do I get this out of my head?

Only watched a couple of episodes of that golf thing on Netflix and one featured him

His wardrobe is something

Mind you, they showed Morikawa in a meeting with his apparel company and one of the suggested shirts was horrendous. His response was something like “how about white” and the fashion dude replied with “we’ll come back to that one.”

Yes - and I'll be interested to watch this year's Majors. Was one of my thoughts early on. One of the big attractions of LIV early on (other than ginormous one of selling your soul for money) was the lighter schedule. Get more money for playing less golf. Play three day tourneys instead of four. Play every two or three weeks ... 16 tourneys a year instead of the average 25 - 30 PGAT guys play. More time with your family. Way lighter schedule. Play against the same people every week, a few great ones, but a bunch of has-beens - known names coasting on the downhill side of their careers - and a few never-weres.

But how long do you suppose you can stay at the very top level of the sport when by definition one of the main attractions of your tour is that you can be more casual about golf, have more "me time"? You gotta earn it on the PGAT. Everyone gets Participation Prizes on LIV. How long does DJ stay competitive when his primary competition is not Scottie, but Talor Gooch. How long does Koepka hit his highest level when he has to beat Sergio or Pat Perez?

I figured it would take a few years before the skills would (almost inevitably) begin to diminish. The Majors this year and next will be fascinating. So, you ask, "If two of the current LIV players win two of the next four majors wouldn't that make them the Premier golf tour?"

I'd respond by asking " If one or none of the current LIV players win in the next four majors,  wouldn't that confirm that they have become nothing but exhibition tour players?"

I've kinda given up trying to explain this. I did business with the Saudis a couple decades ago (worked for Merrill Lynch International). These are cold people to do business with. That is why they are insanely rich, why they have been able to buy (or try to buy) our sport. The Saudis bought a golf tour as a hobby, instead of a couple more yachts. Believe me or not - don't care. These people don't give a flying crap about the good of our game. They care about their own motives. Nothing else. This is truth. And if you don't see this, I'm sorry, but you are blind. They are pretty much indifferent as to the actual golfer's careers. They are badly damaging the global sport of golf, and are doing the samerthing with pro tennis. Really hope the guys that went to LIV with stars in their eyes, drooling over the numbers in their bank accounts get that this is how PIF sees them:

image.png.13c2b4221244f748d3f01e7cdc586578.png

Good grief folks, wake the heck up! Just say no.

Top guys generally don’t play 25-30 tournaments per year

For example, Rory played 21 last year including majors and that’s with 2 in Dubai

Scheffler also played 21

Top LiV guys play a minimum of 18 (14 + 4)

Smith plays a minimum of 21 (14 + 4 + 3 in Australia)

Why all the talk about "how do these guys get back on the PGA Tour"?

Why would getting them back be a point of discussion?  They left so let them go and move on with your own golf viewing.

The guys who went to Liv turned their backs on all of the golf fans, I don't see them being welcomed back by the majority of the viewers.  Butt that's me.

100%. That's a narrative by some of the players on both sides, mainly Rory and Bryson. It definitely isn't fan driven.

Checked in to YouTube for 10 minutes. 13.000 people with me, maximum 1000 spectators on the course on a beautiful sunny Florida day. 16 holes played, Garcia in the lead. The only top player halfway near the lead is Rahm. The top 10 have Burmester, Meronk, the mighty Peter Uihlein. These tournaments become the Nothingburger they deserve to be.

Oh, and Anthony Kim made a bogey barrage, as I expected. He is not ready to play professional golf on Tour caliber courses.

Looks like Gooch, Wolff and Hatton are right there, but let’s just pick the names we want….

Watching paint dry? lol  Winner gets to play at ANGC next week.

Remind me who wins the exhibition a week from now if you or anyone else remembers.

I'd rather watch paint dry than watch dried, cracked paint flake off the wall.

Absolutely if you don't consider the 60% that are washed up and never were players that are competing against them in every event
