20 year old Tom Kim will likely pass Jack Nicklaus this week in PGA Tour career money. He's already ahead of Ray Floyd, Johhny Miller, Lee Trevino, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

Jack Nicklaus $5,734,031

Tom Kim $5,507,323

Raymond Floyd $5,323,075

Lee Trevino    $3,478,328

Johnny Miller  $2,747,484

Arnold Palmer  $1,861,857

Gary Player    $1,834,482

The career earnings list is an awfully poor way to compare golfers or any athlete in professional sports across different generations. As good as he is now wake me up when Tom Kim is within a few light years of the number of tour wins Jack, Arnie, Billy Casper, Lee, Johnny, Gary etc have.  A better comparison is to take what the older players earned and covert it into todays money. Outside of that the best currency in golf is the number of events won. 20 years from now some golfer will pass Tiger on the career earnings list while having only won 10-15 events.

Does seem ridiculous when in 1950 a VW beetle was a little over $12oo. new and gasoline was a shade over 25 cent per gallon.

Beer was $.57 a quart in the 1930s, lol, maybe that's better and someone will get the point.

Adjusting golf winnings for inflation no different now than it was in 1950, 1980 or 2019.  Pretty meaningless since it still relies on the bias of the person identifying the multipliers and doesn't necessarily give an idea in relative terms as to the significance of a $ then vs. one some other time.

Good news is Bobby Jones' professional winnings are still the same!

Inflation sure but purses are much bigger too. For example, Nicklaus won $13000 for taking home the 1963 PGA. That would only be about $126K today. So only around 10% of today’s typical purses?
I read an article that estimated Nicklaus career earnings, adjusted for today’s dollars and today’s purses at around $175 million.

Maybe they should institute something like the QBR in football to compare players.  Let's take all the fun and personality out of it.

Isn’t stroked gained basically that?

Yup. Also, the way CPI/Inflation has been formulated and adjusted is questionable at best.

That list says nothing, NOT worth comparing.

What those men accomplished at the same time of earning, puts them in a different league compared to youngster Tim.  Money is not the measure of a man, but his deeds, actions and judgment.  Though Tim appears noteworthy, let's hope over his life he grows as wise and accomplished as those in the list.  Until then, the jury is OUT on Tim.

Career money list should be expressed as something like percentage of total purse won or something like that. Otherwise the only meaningful comparison of greatness across eras is wins

Beat me to it.

But then you can't use a top 25 or top 50 lifetime exemption if you're, you know, dead, cause you played in the 50s.

Career money list is the most asinine stat ever made.  50 years from now a young guy is going to win a Tour event that will surpass Tiger’s career money all in one fell swoop.  And then someone will make a comment about that. Silly.
