Peter Allis , Dave Marr =Hof. Paul couldn't carry their little ball marker bags, though real men don't have such silly things.

Actually each of these men also suffered criticism from the public. Allis was considered a pompous wind bag and Marr was a name dropper. BUT I enjoyed both of them. And Paul and Johnny as well.

As many have stated already the commentary isn't that bad as I'm only watching the golf anyway.  The airplane noise was annoying I guess though.  The real problem was the amount of commercials, especially the amount of 'playing through' spots.  I realize that most of the networks want you to watch their pay versions for more in depth coverage but it's getting a bit silly with so little golf shown and so many commercials.  Azinger isn't that bad, but he's not Miller, but some of the other commentators weren't very good.  Overall a fun tournament to watch especially in prime time on the east coast which was great.

I am not sure how you can complain about "Playing Through". It is an opportunity to stay with live coverage during commercial breaks.

Azinger isn’t going to lose his job, commentators across all sports say ridiculous things at times and are still employed. The PGA Tour and the “golf media” has leaned too much into social media which blows things out of proportion and makes the smallest things into supposedly huge issues when the majority of golf fans/viewers could care less about them instead just preferring to watch great golf.

I don't know about you, but most golf fans want real insight into what is going on in a players mind and what they would be thinking over a shot. Having a competent former player that can relate and tell you what a player is thinking and how they might play a shot is what adds value to a tournament. Otherwise you could just have Joe Buck. Does anyone remember how terrible those US Opens were with FOX?

Yes, and what's wrong with variety.  I would bring back McCord. I'm still not happy with Maltbie and Koch getting pushed out.

The counter argument is that it gives them license to add in more commercial breaks.  Count them pre playing through and now. They go to a lot more breaks.  And in theory if they couldn’t play through ,  people would reject coverage with this many commercials.

Lol. It’s a way for them to play more commercials during live coverage.

Full screen live coverage has gone from ~38mins/hour down to 29/hr and if you factor in the “let us take this moment to remind you” promos it goes down to ~24mins/hr of actual golf content.

At least Rolex allowed us plebes to watch the final hour commercial break free.

But SI isn't the only outlet covering Azingers performance. NY Post, SB nation and even WRXs news page had it covered.

I didn't notice... I only heard the plane buzzing. Just wish overall the US announcers would take a queue from the euro tour and realize less talk is more.

And how! They wouldn't even button it when the final group was approaching 18 green and simply let the moment be. Constant nattering so they could be part of the moment instead of letting it be Clark's.

As to Azinger, I mostly ignore him the way I do others when they full send it into nonsense land, but for whatever reason his baseless take that Clark was somehow the only one capable of or hitting fades after he'd already stated during a previous round how much he liked Rory's ability to work the driver both ways made me shake my head.

It really, really is best to try and let the announcers fade into the background the same way one must for the Cessna. To those who didn't hear the Cessna at all, blessed be you and your special ears, because that drone is annoying as can be. Really no reason their sound team shouldn't be able to cancel out that specific drone considering how constant it is. If the tiny mics & processors on cellphones can take care of things like that then thousand dollar broadcasting inputs & a multi-million dollar broadcast studio should be able to do at least something.

There seems to be a bias in NBC's coverage toward making the players seem superhuman. Azinger's schtick is a piece of that, always acting like a player has no shot whatsoever and then feigning surprise when they end up doing what professional golfers do every day.

It's not for us. It's for casual fans. OTOH it seems to annoy them too if my wife is any indication.

Maybe it’s just silly that golf is spread across too many broadcast companies. There’s just not enough good announcers for that many network teams. Which I can’t believe, but it has to be the case. Concentrate the coverage to one major network and get the best talent in the booth/on course.

NBC really screwed this up by doing the Golf Channel. They have the largest net, but the worst of everything in producing golf content. Dan Hicks is the very best thing of their coverage, because he’s as cool as the other side of the pillow (and everyone still wants to know how he got 1990s Hanna Storm), but they have not been urgent enough in getting a player analyst. Azinger will not be in that booth in ten years. He’s awful. CBS are pros. It should’ve been you Fredo.

Bringing up another, Rossie (Bob Rosburg), who I loved to watch on ABC, who wasn’t above a little hyperbole if not inaccuracy - “He’s got no shot, absolutely no chance Jim!”

Often proven wrong but who cared. He was great entertainment and a wonderfully nice man, not to mention a legitimately good golfer. First roving course reporter if I remember correctly.

I do not know which donkey said it, but one of the announcers proudly referred to the Ryder Cup being played at the LACC in 2017 when it was in fact the Walker Cup. 🤨

What specifically do people not like about Azinger's commentary?

He provides insight into the shot at hand such as the lie of the ball, wind conditions, what other players have done given a similar shot, current mental state and how previous hole(s) affected same. Like Faldo, Azinger offers commentary that is helpful to anyone listening for help with their own game.

He is often wrong. He gives incorrect advice on how to play a shot or doesn't know what shot the player is going to play. He gets surprised all the time.
