"Bring it back, Bring it back!!!" - Driver Edition

As we all know, over the past few years driver technology has faded.  They can't be made bigger.  There's all sorts of specialty materials being used now.  Ultimately when you buy a new driver it will essentially go "longer" because of the material management adding more stability.

 

If you could choose an "old" driver for companies to bring back and revamp with today's technology, what would it be?

 

I would love to see the 2016 Nike Vapor Fly be brought from the dead with some different materials adding stability to make it more playable today and be able to stand up to today's drivers.

I’ve said this before, and prob gonna get flamed for saying this, but I’m ready for a new Ping TiSi 460cc with  an adjustable hosel.

I was back at my parents house looking at my old drivers (975, 510TP, XR-03, etc) and I’d just love something like that: A pear-shaped head, deep face, no visible carbon on the crown, non-adjustable thin hosel… 

 

Then I’d hit it and remember why they’re in the cupboard 🫣

There is something about a thin, bonded hosel that just looks really nice.

If they could make a driver look and sound like a PowerBilt Citation persimmon driver I might buy one. I know Cleveland painted one of their drivers up to mimic the "look." Otherwise the TaylorMade Burner driver (07 or 08 ?) model.

Absolutely. Bring back the tall, deep faced drivers. Cleveland Launcher 400 was as good as anything I've ever played.

My personal pick would be to see how older component companies would handle new tech today. Think SMT 455, Bang-o-matic, Geek DCT, etc. They managed to take market share from major OEMs when all anybody was doing was all-titanium heads, could they do it again with composites and other advanced tech?

This is my pick, best feeling driver, and maybe best looking I ever owned. I might lose the carbon seam on the crown though.

For nostalgia sake, the 975D or the 510DF/TP.  If you weren't a golf nerd in 2002-2003 you can't imagine how popular the 510TP was.  But if it's based on my performance with a driver, it's the R9.  I have never hit a driver better than I hit my old R9 with Fubuki 73X.  I killed that club.  I think my current driver is longer and more forgiving (Ping G410 with Ventus Black 6X), but the R9 was special.  🙂

The Mavrik 10.5 I have in the bag now isn't much longer, and it's much harder to hit a fade with for me.  I wish I would have kept the 580 now.

Original Ping Rapture, I thought at the time it was a real leap forward.

 

Bridgestone J33 460.  Maybe the best looking and best feeling Metal driver I have ever owned.  And long, just not super forgiving.  If you could make something look and feel the same and and add some forgiveness, I would buy it in a heart beat.
