Done with Chrome Softs

Having got given a dozen of the latest Chrome Soft Truvis I put them into play yesterday.

Off the driver, woods, hybrid, long irons, they’re great and as long as anything I’d normally play.

The mid irons - wedges can only be described as a lottery! Twice from the fairway I airmailed a green from 150 to the front with a pitching wedge going at a front cut pin. Both times the greens are 15-20 yards long. Next up was an approach with 190 to the back edge. Pushed an 8 iron slightly that felt weak too clearing by easily 15 yards and clattering into the next group’s buggy windscreen about 215 away at the next tee.

Bottom line is they’re dangerously unpredictable! It’s not like I’m playing distance irons (Srixon ZTX2s) and I clean the face/grooves before every shot. I could actually see someone on a tee box getting clattered soon as a lot of our tees are 20-40 yards behind the green you’re hitting an approach to.

Back to my stash of B330S that I stockpiled.

What are the differences? Actual design/material differences? Or the retail ones are just the quality control rejects?

From what I saw on mgs it’s 7% more compression. Rumor has it the triple track version is the cs the pros are playing.

Completely legit. Obviously CS are as long as the ads imply. If I could only flight my 8 iron so only goes 195 instead of 215, I'd be looking for a new ball...

I've played CS/CSx since they came out, I prefer the newer Graphene, but have no complaints about either.

This is a first (in my memory anyway): someone blaming a ball for 25+ yards of distance variation on (assumingly) equivalent strikes. Just goes to show how reviews you read about should be taken with a healthy grain of salt.

That’s why I always carry 8.5 and 9.5 irons

What immediately comes to mind for me is that this ball, combined with your swing, is on the cusp of a strange place in the world of launch conditions. One where what might be considered slight changes from swing to swing can result in wildly inconsistent results.

Normally I'd think it's on the high side, and the normal higher spin is keeping you shorter than otherwise, but I expect it's theoretically possible to be on the other side of that spectrum.

Just a random thought....

I’m gonna blow your mind so make sure you put a helmet on before you read any further.

It’s you, not the ball.

I’ll take the rest of your Truvis. I’ll pay for shipping.

Some pros use the stock ball and some use custom blend. They’re sold on eBay as well. It’s known the tour balls are a bit former with different numbers and that is all.

Our range balls are CS X, so I've been thinking of switching to them for consistency between the range and course.

They feel great on the range.

@AG12 can you confirm is there is a pro version of the chrome soft? Thanks for the consideration either way

I’ve played both and there’s not a lot of difference in the two. The X is a hair firmer and spins a hair more. The CS has a 75 compression rating and the X has a 90 so neither are actually “soft”. I stick with the regular CS because it spins the perfect amount for my liking. Never had any issues with a jumper with these balls but I have when messing around with the ultra low compression balls like a supersoft and duo.

Yeah these balls are terrible. I hit one with my 5i from 215 out that wound up 50 past the green, landed right on a tee some guy at the next hole was putting in the ground. He hits it and it goes right in a fairway bunker 250 out. Stupid ball, stupid 515 yard 5iron, amiright??

I play the CS X, will confirm massive differences in distance with my 7 iron last week. 80 yards vs. 195 yards.

One fat, one bladed. Time to switch to a different ball.

Funny, I tried the CS last year and I had the opposite experience. I loved it around the green but it just seemed to come up short for me on my iron shots. I’ve wrestled with this because I really liked the short game performance but the ball played more than a full iron short for me. I don’t blame the ball, it’s just a quirk of my setup, gear, swing, spin, whatever. But if I need a pitch and a putt for a save, the Chrome soft is it.

That's me. It spins good around the green, but I lost distance.
