This May Be The World Record

Well, not counting Kim Jong II’s 38 where he had 11 hole in ones that is.

Charity scramble my former department puts on every year to raise funds for the families of fallen officers. This score brought out some catcalls and BS’s from the crowd. I guess it’s possible to get 10 birdies and 8 eagles right?

Lots of money was raised and people had a good time so it was a success. All of the good prizes were in the raffle and silent auction so there really wasn’t a monetary incentive to post such a crazy score other than I guess they figured they would get admiration for their golfing skills. That backfired on them.

I've competed in some charity events where pencil golfers won, however, none were this good (bold). The friends I play in these events with know we aren't going to win and this type of activity will always exist. I can ignore it as long as it is for a good cause and raises money for the charity,

Even if it's legit, it doesn't look good. And there will be squawking. I would prefer to know more about the course distance the tournament was played at and if there were "mulligans"? To get that low you would need numerous short par 4's. Having said all that:

1st place team:

Kirby = +1.4, Fabio = 1.0, not sure about the other two. (I wonder if John Tate was really John Pate?)

3rd place team = all 4 Indexes between 6.5 - 8.6

45 is bonkers but all the scores seem really low. I've played in a lot of scrambles.....i've never seen one where 59 didn't even finish top 3

Was this played on a 4500yd course? That might make a bit more sense because you could drive many par 4's

The course was Indian Canyons South in Palm Springs - around 6200 yards par 72. You could buy up two mulligans per player and there was one hole that had a LPGA pro hitting where if you were willing to donate another $100 you could potentially get a HIO by hitting closer to the hole than her. Another hole had a CO2 ball launcher giving you a 320 drive and then an easy shot into a par 5. Other than that it was a normal scramble, however the course recently opened due to over seeding and the greens were crazy slow. My group (two single digit handicaps and two rusty former good players) never could figure out the speed and we were short all day long. It was like putting on a nice tee box actually.

I figured we'd see a mid-high 50's round as that typically shows up on this course, but this was a new low. 27 under par is getting an eagle on half of the holes and birdies of the other 9. I suppose it’s possible, but even the best pros in the world don’t make every putt.

My buddy is the tournament director and he said a lot of money was raised. The tournament is played on two courses (two winners etc) and the pace was great as we finished in just over 4 hours. It got up to 70 degrees, all drinks were free, there were food vendors on several holes, a good buffet lunch and lots of great raffle prizes so it was a successful effort. When I saw the 45 I had to share as many WRX’rs have seen similar antics but probably not to that extreme.

Yes, it was. Kiss a bunch of people's asses, and watch them cough up the dough.

Once you start adding a bunch of mulligans the story becomes a bit more believable

Even with Mulligan’s I am not sure that I am buying that as correct.

If we are talking about a Par 72 they basically need to have eagled ever par 5 which in itself is not the easiest thing in the world but then they need to have eagles on four par 4’s. I am just not buying it.

I agree that this will never go away and generally I can ignore it as well. But in a game where integrity is so important "Patrick Reed" it bugs me when the team behind you that you've seen duff it around all day come in and post a 55. I'm all for raising money for charity, but cheating doesn't raise more money.

The 45 seems crazy but all the scores are very low. Every group doesn't cheat. On a very short course with a lot of mulligans, I've seen some crazy stuff. I've shot in the 50s with only one player under a 10 index. Depending on how the mulligans work ( per team or player) you can make an eagle taking 20+ shots on a hole.

I could see if you have like 4 good golfers (sub 10) plus each guy is buying 10 mulligans....you could see a crazy low number if the course is short.

At the end of the day if its LEGITIMATELY going to charity, I dont care if people cheat for small prizes if they are paying a big entry fee , and it's going to a good cause. They shouldn't do it....but it's for charity at the end of the day

2 mulligans per player. Trust me, this was pure BS. 2nd place team was 10 strokes back.

Yeah 45 seems really low. I was just saying some of these scrambles get a little ridiculous with all the mulligans. I didn't see the 2 per person limit. I ain't got time to read and stuff!

I'm probably going to get roasted for this but.....If your playing a company/charity scramble the idea is to have it's not all about winning. This coming from a monopoly board flipper.

Side story our company scramble did closest to the pin GIR on every hole. The team I was on won 7/18 of them still came in 6th lol. This is why have a different mindset in these events.

Bad math on my part. They should be DQ’d for turning in a ridiculous scorecard but it’s a charity scramble.

I played in a 4-man scramble (only had 3 guys) with mulligans and 4strings for each player. We came in with a 49 and I thought we were gonna get strung up. No pros, just everyone was on that day. I could see a 45 with scratch players and all those add-ons that can run the score down.

Sure - I can see this. I've been in charity scrambles where there was no limit on string. Somebody bought something like $1000 worth of string. Same for purchased mulligans.

For company (work) scrambles, I've also sat in on organizational meetings for these events where things were run by our sales team (so you know all those comments I make about how sales guys at-work dress is more like pro golfers than anything real golfers would wear - that's where my opinions originate.) It was made clear in these meetings, in no uncertain terms, that certain customer teams must finish in the top 5, using any methods necessary, up-to-and-including liberal use of the pencil.

These scrambles are super fun for getting out, enjoying the weather, a few beers, and hey - you just happen to have a club in your hands and there happens to be a white object to hit. Enjoy it. Don't overthink it.

A wise man told me many moons ago to "an honest man has a better chance of hitting the lotto than winning a charity scramble.".

So enter 'em, eat their food, drink their beverages, and maybe win a door prize.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.
