How did you determine your grip size?

How did folks determine the grip size and/or the number of wraps they decided to use?

Do you just keep experimenting until you think it feels good... 3 regrips later (ouch)?

Do you use your golf glove size as a guide as just go with it?

Do you measure your hand and fingers and determine a grip size via a generic chart?

Did you just grab the club off the rack and think, sure, that works?

How did you pick your grip size and/or # of wraps?

For me , it was all about feel, rather than my hand size is xxx and I should be in a grip size that is xxx.

Had standard sized grips for decades. Tried mid-size once just to try - only cost me two grips on a couple of irons to experiment - no good. Eventually settled on two extra wraps under the right hand, again, tried it but not on a full set and that's what I've done now for many years. Easy to find grips at some golf stores these days and get a feel for sizes. Then it's like the three bears - know when it's just right.

Started with what came with the club 10 years ago. After having them regripped and dropping a few dollars figured this can’t be hard. YouTube to the rescue. Settled on 0.580 on 0.600 shafts for several years after trying on two clubs for a bit. Went to mcc plus 4 on my irons last year and not looking back. Still .58 on .60 shafts for woods unless the shaft is a little larger then pull it 0.75 inches longer. Trial and error until you like it.

regripping is the easiest clubmaking thing you can do from home, i have always had a bunch of grips and tape lying around. i always thought standard was too thin and midsize was too fat. I just added layers until I got what I like.. +3 on wedges, +2 on everything else

i can see how it would be difficult to experiment if you are paying someone $10 to regrip plus $10 a grip

I'm a perfect +1 wrap and stayed with that for years. I finally, tried a few midsize grips and finally settled on MCC Align Mid. I wish I had done it years ago. It solved a few issues, but most importantly, it allowed me to stop the re-gripping that had plagued me for a long time. Turns out conventional wisdom was wrong.

I used to play with a strong grip with full cords in standard until I could see the wear pattern. I tried more layers underneath and tried larger grips to reduce pressure. I have tourwrap midsize on my irons and wedges, mcc+4 because they look sweet on my fairway woods and driver (913 d+ whiteboard pulls). Now that the +4 exist, I don't feel the need to add more tape.

If anything can go right, it might!

Trial and error. I have big hands/long fingers so I was always starting from Midsize. Over time I found that most Midsize grips I tried were a little too bulky in the top hand and a little too narrow in the bottom hand, mostly GP grips. I would add two wraps of tape for the bottom hand, but eventually ended up switching to something with less taper. I really like Lamkin's formula for their "+" grips, and when I use Tour Velvets I typically do 6 wraps bottom, 4 wraps top, but that will depend on shaft butt diameter.

Easy.

Start with standard. Read and research about grip sizes. Go to sleep at night thinking that you'd do better with midsized. Think about all the shots missed because you used standard grips. Research Midsized grips for 3 weeks. Buy a set of Midsized grips. Spend 1-2 hours cutting off old grips and tape, regrip with midsized. Feel like a schoolboy on Christmas morning during your first range session with Midsized grips. Discover that you are pushing/slicing everything after 1 range session. Order a set of Standard grips. Remove Midsized grips. Install Standard grips. Get mad at yourself for wasting all that money and time.

A year later, get fit. Fitter measures your hand - "you should be Midsized". Order standard anyway. Dream again about grips. Research and order midsized grips. Install. Now everything is OK.

The problem to getting it right is that shafts are different diameters, shafts have different tapers, grips have different shaft diameters, grips have different tapers, oh and tape has different thickness. I've tried to keep a chart that determines how many layers of tape, for both hands, and the lower hands, to use, which depends on the diameter of the shaft and the grip. Then I look at taper of the grip and shaft and sort of have to eyeball an adjustment if those are different than my normal expectations.

I like a grip that is as big as it can be without being too big. That for me means I have to just get touching of my middle two fingers on my grip hand to touch my palm, but more importantly, for my guide hand to be able to still comfortably cover my grip hand's thumb, without over covering it. That is the "stress point" that can cause my grip to be inconsistent, caused by variances in how I attempt to grip the club. For instance, if I'm having a hard time covering that thumb, I often come in from the side with a strong grip on my guide hand, but that leaves me closing the face at impact. Or I can "overcorrect" and grip too soft with my guide hand to cover that thumb, and lead to a loose or open grip at impact. I am starting to think some of my clubs are a smidge too big mid-grip for me to cover the thumb consistently in my club gripping attempts.

Then there is taper. How can you have a perfect grip and then choke up an inch on the club? Your perfect grip to help you hit it straight consistently just became an ill-fitting grip that helps you hit it inconsistently. If there were no taper at all on the grip this would not be a problem. I'm not a fan of choking up on the club as a result.

My general grip I've settled upon is a .58 midsize grip, with layers stepped down the grip (esp. the lower part) to reduce taper. Then more layers in general for smaller diameter shafts, and fewer layers for large diameter graphite shafts.

My notes are below.

Lamkin UTX Cord Midsize Grips (.580), 63g

.600 Shafts (X100, Modus Tour105, Steelfiber i95)

+1 Layer, +2 Layers@4”, +3 [email protected]”, +4 Layers@7”

.61x Shafts (Speeders, KK 100 TX)

+1 Layer@4”, +2 Layers@5”, +3 Layers@6” + 4 Layers@7”

New: Added layer at 3” in Speeder 7.2

Newer: Got rid of layer at 3” in HZRDUS 83g

.645 Shaft (Alidla NV 85H)

+1 [email protected]”, +2 [email protected]

Z Grip Midsize are .600 and require 2 extra layers to equal the above

A layer is masking tape. Grip tape is always on top. Inches listed above are inches down from end of shaft. Subtract number from 10” for amount of tape.

OH, and on top of all of that, don't forget that on some days your hands and fingers are FAT!

You can experiment with unlimited sizes with only one grip. If you don't have an air compressor, get one. They're cheap as dirt at Tractor Supply. Even if you prefer to install grips with tape and solvent, it will come in handy for other stuff. Everyone has cars and they all have at least 4 tires. Blowing dust out of your tower computer, shooing cats from under the bed, and on and on.

Always used to use round grips then a coach I was working with wanted me to use ribbed to get my right hand more on top of the shaft and not looked back since.

It does bug me when people with such strong grips use align or ribbed grips as youjust can't feel the rib when it's buried in your palm.

Now only use Golf Pride Tour Velvet 58 ribbed but I build the butt up to .600 to make sure all grips feel equal.

Would love to find V55 again as I do tlike the Golf Pride on top but can't see that happening any time soon!

Had "standard" grips on the clubs given to me which felt fine. Wanted to try the whole +4 thing, those always felt like a little much throughout. Turns out I'd ordered .58 instead of .60 and it didn't really work since I have wide palms and short stubby fingers. Met in the middle at 0.60 standard with 2 wraps under the lower hand. Haven't played long enough to really want to experiment with much, but at this point my current setup is comfortable so I don't really see myself changing. Only thing I have different is extra buildup tape on my 58 since I only use that club choked down.
