in praise of the cotton polo .....

Recommended Posts

Michael Bamberger on golf dot com has a nice appreciation of the now near-extinct cotton polo. You can find it here.

It's very hard to find a cotton polo these days. Even on Peter Millar's website, nearly every shirt is primarily a polyester material, although they do sell one shirt that's a 58% cotton / 38% polyester / 4% spandex polo blend.

I avoid 100% cotton... I love blends... but in summer it's impossible to wear anything other than lightweight breathable material

Growing up in Colorado, I used to be all about 100% cotton polos. Never touched a synthetic. Then I moved to Alabama.

Walk a few 18 holes rounds in the middle of summer down there, and you will quickly want to burn every cotton polo you come into contact with.

Now that I am in the mid-Atlantic, I have a full arsenal of polos. Cotton for late fall, winter and early spring, then polyester and blends for the rest of the year.

Agree about cotton being seasonal. I have a couple in my closet that I only wear in early Spring or late Fall. Good for layering. Never wear during regular season as they are just too hot and sticky. I'm in the DC area and in the summer humidity the only shirts that work are the hi-tech wicking fabrics - not cotton.

In the hot and humid NE, playing in 100% cotton in the summer makes no sense. I did it for years until wising up (and poly becoming lightweight and prevalent).

All of my off-the-course polos are 100% cotton. It's not at all hard to find 100% polos. It's just that if you're looking for cotton "golf polos," then, yeah, that's pretty incongruous anymore.

This is what I thought. I have tons of cotton polos, which I wear weekends, on casual Friday, etc. want a cotton polo, go into J Crew, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, Macy’s, TJ Maxx, or basically anyplace that sells casual men’s clothing. I’m not sure how those cotton shirts differ from the polos when wore on the course in the 1970s.

I'll clarify. I live in Tennessee and travel for work all throughout the southeast. I have no use for cotton.

That's ridiculous - it's not that hard to find cotton polos. Criquet, Ralph Lauren, Linksoul, Brooks Brothers, and many more. Even JL and Greyson have cotton polos. People really don't have anything to write about during quarantine.

That said if you want a really high quality cotton polo- Spier and Mackay. Really well made, nice collars, good value.

All that said, for golf I can't wear cotton. Soaked through by the third hole. Nothing worse than playing golf in a shirt that now weighs 5 pounds from sweat absorption.

Fairway and Green mercerized cotton works well for me. I do not like poly blend shirts, play in Virginia, and would rather have a lightweight cotton. Moisture wicking shirts wear hot for me. I have had this issue with high end to entry level pricepoints; a true first world problem.

If anything can go right, it might!

+1 for this.... Over the past couple of years I have replaced all of my 100% cotton polos with blended shirts. I am also in the process of replacing my 100% cotton t-shirts.

it's cool but you could never wear a light colored cotton shirt here in texas during the summer. It'll just drench up with sweat.

Performance pique material is BY FAR the best hot weather material there is in my opinion. The polyester spandex "tech" shirts seem to insulate more than they ventilate. But for casual wear - yes cotton is nice.

Absolutely cannot wear cotton polos anymore. I don’t even wear cotton for work. It’s 100% polyester year round. If it’s cooler or cold, add a base layer or a jacket. Synthetic blend shirts are a god send, even more for my work than golf. Summer in VA, 95* with 100% humidity at a shipyard sucks with cotton. Almost as bad while playing golf.

When I buy a golf shirt these days, I check the tag to make sure it is NOT 100% cotton.

Not only does cotton kill on hot days, but what manufacturers can do with colors is wildly better with poly shirts. Add to that holding those colors, holding it's shape, quick drying after a wash, no-iron packing on trips, and logos staying flat instead of bunching, and it isn't close anymore.

The ONLY 100% cotton shirts I'd look at are Peter Millar, and it would have to be a truly beautiful shirt from a course that I love to make the cut.

Polyester is great for sweaty warm weather here in Texas but in the winter or particularly dry fall or spring days polyester shirts turn into Tesla static electricity machines on me. Cotton/Poly blends work very well too.

100% Pima cotton golf shirts are my favorite if it has to be cotton for golf. Pique cotton is just not a great material for a moving around activity like golf. It also shrinks and doesn't fit right after about 10 washes.

Check out Criquet golf. Based in Texas no less. The trouble with polyester is that one stinks when wearing them. Of course I live in the North.
