How many "regular" PGA wins equal a "major" win?

I don't think you can really come up with a number. There are certain tournaments that are a little more "prestigious" than others but a win is still a win. Majors are in another category for me and that's coming from somebody who does agree that the media tends to overrate the majors sometimes.

In my mind, to compare to the NFL:

Majors = Super Bowl

WGC/Players = Conference Title

highly regarded events (AP Invitational, Memorial) = Division Title

Regular Tour Event = Regular season game

They're all the same format more or less with generally the same sized field. But the particulars about them, even if it's just the prestige and legacy that come with them, warrants Majors of having notably more value. Percentages of Major wins per Tour Event wins were brought up and Tiger is 17%, Jack is at 24%. Most everyone else who has a Major to their name has a significantly smaller percentage. I would argue that 10 Tour events is equivalent to 1 Major, although I'd bet most guys on tour would trade any number of Tour wins for 1 Major (if money were not a factor).

For awhile Angel Cabrera had 2 wins....both majors...….then he screwed up and won a regular event in W. VA

and ruined his perfect record.

If you were a tour player at the end of your career who never won a major, but had 20 tour wins, would you trade them all for just one major?

How many tour wins would Tiger trade for 5 more major wins? How many would he trade for just three more putts falling at Bellerive?

Winning a major means near eternal flame and glory or something like it amongst pro golfers. Winning the Waste Management Open or any other regular tour event I'm sure is a great high for a pro, but in no way compares to a major.

As far as player of the year, I'd rank multiple major winner ahead of a multiple tour event winner.

So a Doug Sanders would give up his 20 wins to have a career of Micheel or Moody? one win which just happened to be a major. You think he would prefer the one win career?

He sure thinks about the missed putt at St Andrews a lot. He has said so.

Zero, majors are the only thing anyone remembers. Regular events are not equal.

Are you sure about that? How many events did Nelson win in a row in '45? How many total? Without looking it up what year did Bruce Crampton win the Open?

:)

Who was Bruce Crampton?

OK, I jest (a little).

I don't think any amount of regular wins equals a major. They are different categories.

Similar to other sports, where no amount of regular wins, equals a playoff series win or championship. A team could have several really good regular seasons, but if they don't do well in the playoffs or win a championship, then it's not at the same level of achievement as the others who have

This seems silly. They aren't different categories.

Majors are just golf tournaments and people decided to consider them "majors" at some point in the past. There is nothing inherently special about them. They have strong fields, just like The Players, WGC events, Bay Hill, etc.

People here trying to argue they outweigh other tour wins by 10 to 1 are absolutely delusional.

It's much harder to get INTO a major in the first place, than a regular tour event, not to mention much more pressure. Easily 10-1.

11 in a row...18 total (I think). Plus all the driving.

If it was a 10-1 ratio you'd see as many players with 30 wins as 3 majors. Tiger should have 140 wins. 4/5-1 makes more sense.

Players don't play all events, but they play all majors if eligible.

Tiger essentially has played 20 events a year when healthy, or about 40% of the tournaments he was eligible for.

So if you normalized his 65 non-major wins, that would come out to

162 non-major wins

(65 / 0.40)

So he's actually have 176 wins totals. So I'm going with my 13-1 ratio...

I can understand if someone thinks the ratio is 2-1, 3-1, 4-1.

But 10-1? How does that make sense?

There are 52 events a year. 1/13th of them are majors. Seems to me it would be a 13-1 ratio, not to mention much harder to get into a major in the first place.

There aren't 52 events/year. More like 45.

There's one only one Players per year, so I guess a Players is worth 45 regular events, or 4 majors.

I'm sure he does just as I'm certain every player has regrets over lost chances. Not the same as saying you'd give up 20 wins for that one major though.

You're correct but missed the Crampton trick question. He never won a major.

Hmm that shows perhaps majors are not THAT much more memorable necessarily than regular events.

I'd say around 7. But the odd thing is the more you win regular events w/o winning a major, the more a stigma it becomes. So if not monetarily then at least reputationly it becomes a burden at some point

How many regular PGA tour wins equal a major?...................................Hummmm how about "O"............Folks will remember a major winner for years, but they most likely could not tell you who won the John Deer last year.........

Heck people can't even remember how to spell John Deere yet alone remember who won it.

Uncle Dave once again plowing his way through the topics to show his prowess in picking low hanging fruit.

:D

Edit: Please don't paint me green with envy.

Brilliant :-)

As for me, it's one for one. The only thing I liked about a few majors in the past was setting up the courses where Par meant something. Other than that, they are just golf tournaments. And maybe, just maybe, those that won more than a few of them in the past, may have had that exact perspective ;-)

Here what I don't get about the 10 to 1 idea. So Andy North or Daly had a better body of work than Couples or Love?. They certainly had one week better than Davis or Freddie but a while career?

Or are Couples and Love a bad example? Perhaps if Justin Thomas were to stop where he is. 9 wins one major. Andy North had a better career? Did North ever reach #1? Ryder Cup? POY?

Edited to add... Funny how we all get worked up on threads like this....and I'm as guilty as anyone..... There is no correct answer, it's all opinions. :)

Did Bruce Crampton even play in the British Open?

He did, but only five times. Three at the start of his career, but only twice in his prime. He finished second in majors four times, all of them to Jack Nicklaus.

Like many others, he did eventually win a major on the Senior Tour.
