Why do I hit ball so high? Videos attached

Recommended Posts

I hit the ball higher than most of the good players that I play with and I believe it is a factor in my lack of distance control. I have a few good strikes per round that don’t fly the distance I believe they should. Does anyone see anything in my swing that I can adjust to hit the ball lower? How do good players flight the ball down?

Man looks like a good swing.

I'm a mid to high cap so take this for what it's worth, but it's possible you're adding loft at impact, or not delofting with your angle of attack, effectively turning a stronger loft into a weaker one.

On the equipment side, maybe your shafts are too soft, or at least tip soft?

Does this happen with every club, or just irons or woods or driver or wedges?

Those numbers are within a few degrees of launch angle from PGA tour averages.

You have great horse to ride in that swing. Impression to me is that your arm speed out paces your body rotation. You're swinging like you have a Driver in hand. A gazillion 3/4 knockdown shots might help you where focus is motoring club with body rotation while keeping body low and flexed. Wish I had your flexibility and twitch. Good luck.

There are some major/serious distance variations on that chart. Two shots with almost the same SS and there's over a 40 yard difference. Other's are not as bad but still double digit distance separation. My son has the same problem with height and it's because he has a quick wrist release at impact. You may very well have the same release. As far as those numbers go with that trackman, I'd attempt to try a different one and see what transpires. I put very limited validity on that tech, for it's been stated that they can be calibrated to enhance sales.

Shaft is a little vertical in transition and you are over tilting your shoulders to come from the inside.

A little more horizontal shaft using wrists and stay in left tilt longer.

I’m curious how high the op is hitting it. IMO, with those swing speeds there is nothing wrong with a peak of 100-110’. I swing the 7i in the low 80s, and I get a peak around 100’. I love how high I hit it. If I need a lower shot, club up and make a 2/3 swing, or go up 2 clubs and only make a half swing.

Why is it going so high? Launch angle, spin, and ball speed. Launch angle is fine, spin isn’t crazy, so I guess you hit it too fast...

If setup is part of the problem, that needs to be address first, but he’s isn’t reaching and even if he was, it would be unlikely that would completely solve this issue.

His arms are hanging straight down, his hands aren’t even under his chin. In what universe is he reaching his arms? If he moved his arms further in, they’d be against his body.

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't expecting to use my track man stats when I started the thread or I would have cleaned them up a bit. On the 6 iron, 2 shots were mishits and 1 looks like a misread. I just wanted to show what my launch angles were on the well struck balls. I am not looking to gain any distance with irons, I just want a more controlled ball flight. I play in a handful of local amateur stroke play events every year and almost without exception the guys kicking my butt have a lower ball flight. I should have noted that I also hit a fade. And a pretty sizable one with longer irons. With my shorter irons I hit the center of the club face more often than not but even on a wedge I aim 15 to 20 ft left of the pin. I can force myself to hit it lower with a 3/4 shot or hit a lower draw by manipulating my release but they are wildly inconsistent. I will work on the 3/4 shot but only plan on trying for the lower draw in emergency situations. 7 years ago I was an 17 handicap and with the help of a lot of people on this site, and a ton of trial and error, I have built my swing. I am finally to the point where my swing feels good, but by nature I am a tinkerer. I am playing the best golf of my life but in my mind I have hit my ceiling with my current ball flight.

With that being said I was super pumped to see Monte chime in and give me some advice. I have bought all your videos and they have without a doubt improved my swing and short game.

A couple questions on your advice though. Do I need to consciously try to correct both things at the same time? Or will concentrating on fixing one of them help fix the other? For example, does shallowing the shaft a little force my body to move correctly?

I want to make sure I understand what you are saying when you say "using wrists." At the top of my backswing my right wrist is fully extended. Because of this I assume the "adduction of the wrist" is the way I need to shallow the club? Is that correct? The setting and releasing of the wrists is a very natural part of my swing so I want to make sure that this is what you mean before I go down this rabbit hole.

Thanks!

Fixing the shaft position will make you not want to over tilt your shoulders. Not over tilting your shoulders will force better wrist action or you will be steep and/or too left. So yes, working on one helps the other.

Dont know what your deal is...

def072c9-4140-4973-b982-92dfb17a2ab3.jpegPicture perfect posture... and like mentioned, you caught part of addressing ball/preshot routine.

as for you elk video, thats all great and dandy for a pro like elk, which by the way is how he hits a knockdown, but that isnt a stock shot by no means...but to tell most ams to get closer to the ball, instead of the shaft lean that elk adds, you will get an EE. But even so, OP isnt asking how to hit a knockdown on demand... which what that video is.
