That really shows just how misleading stats can be. Putted well most of the week, until very late. That putt on 16 after the great bunker shot, ugh!

And wouldn't you take enough club to get there on 16?

Plain and simple, DJ is a poor putter on the short ones when the pressure is on. How about when Day asked him if he wanted him to finish. DJ says, "whatever you want." Lol. So Day asks him again, and I still don't think DJ knew how to answer. He needs a stud caddy....badly.

No. One player is a master with the wedge and is second to none as a scrambler. The other can't take advantage of his ridiculous length off the tee because he's horrid on wedge-distance approaches.

Until DJ gets better with the putter and is at least passable from 150 and in, which is PW distance for him, he won't win majors.

DJ had arguably the best weekend off the tee in a major in the history of golf. And still didn't win.

If DJ keeps hitting 320-350 yard bombs down EVERY single fairway... you're out of your freaking mind if you think he's not winning a major. He could win 2 majors this year. He certainly needs to get that wiped stroke fixed... no one makes putts with that stroke.

Think he missed two greens on 10 and 11 with short irons in from the middle of the fairway and bogeyed them both. Costly in the end.

I thought he was gone because of that, only Spieth's slip at 17 and a great shot into 18 brought him back into it.

After watching all four days, I would say that a downhill 12 footer was a three-putt about half the time. Downhill putts on that course were just brutal all week. There was no such thing as a routine 4-footer.

Thing is, he won't keep hitting those bombs down every fairway. He's 156th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy. He wasted a historic driving tournament. When you combine the length and accuracy, its fair to say he wont drive the ball in a tournament ever again like he did this weekend.

Still, its of little consequence if he can't hit his short irons/wedges better. I mean, these approach stats are ghastly for someone with his length off the tee:

75-100 yards: 137th
100-125 yards: 123rd
125-150 yards: 86th

Those distances are all wedges for him, whether it be sand wedge, gap/attack wedge, or pitching wedge. His LOWEST average proximity to the hole for those shots is 18'. And he's hitting probably 8 of these shots EVERY round.

He doesnt give himself enough true scoring chances. And when he does hit it close, he's one of the worst on Tour with the putter in his hand (182nd in putts from inside 10 ft).

Its plagued him his entire career. And its held him back from being a truly special player.

What made it most surprising to me is that he got a perfect read, especially on the speed of the putt, from Jason Day. There's no greater advantage than seeing one of your competitors putt directly down your line.

I don't know if he was thinking "make the eagle and win outright," but he obviously would have been best served by lagging it very gently down there and having a tap in for birdie. After seeing Day's putt, he should have been able to cozy it down there.

Just something he needs to work on. He's too good not to win a major soon.

IIRC, he's over 100 in the "strokes gained-putting" category this year.

But probably now too many demons in his fragile head to ever win a Major .

If he could putt and also was mentally tougher he would be the best golfer in the world.

Will definitely win majors! He is way too good. I spoke with a swing coach on the PGA tour who told me that DJ will be the number 1 player in the world soon. Time will tell on that prediction.

That he won't win a major is harsh. But DJ is clearly not yet ready to be a champion. 14 feet to win a US Open (and a 2 putt to extend) is a classic test of champions and he failed yesterday. I bet, before long, he'll have another shot and hopefully he's learned.
