Nike dropping golf equipment (merged)

As someone who played long before Nike was in the golf club business it was something that I always assumed would inevitably happen. To many, golf only, companies to compete with. Nike never belonged. Most of what they made was ugly, gimmicky or just didn't perform. Basically golf toys not golf clubs. Probably made the worst drivers available minus maybe Mizuno.

If you can't tell I'm happy to see them go

I was really looking forward to Nike's next lineup of clubs too. I don't own a single Nike club but, love the way they look and was looking forward to trying them out. Guess not.

Not surprised...it took this long? Not eading the whole thread but were these guys really serious? Or have a clue in golf. Shortly after spending another reported $50M signing Rory I saw no signs of any golf clubs other than a couple of shoe styles and hats for sale in the high rent stores I saw in California. No clubs. Esp the wasted space overall in the huge store in San Francisco.

I'm not big on getting new driver every time it comes out, but I do have vapor fly woods and drivers and hit them well. Is the value going to go down that bad in next months/year that I am completely screwed it will people want because they don't make anymore? What's an honest opinion from this crew? Thanks

Surprised they lasted this long. Even at Tigers pinnacle Nike was never a top three seller anywhere. Wonder if Rory can now use a decent putter.. Bet all the guys that switched to Nike this year are thrilled they walked away from their old sponsors.. Bet lots will be going back to clubs only contract with performance bonuses..The remaining companies would have a hard time finding money for long term contracts those with Nike would want..Hey maybe they will all go to PXG to replace that iffy staff they have now.. Parson's can probably afford it for a few more years until his golf club company turns him from a billionaire to a multi millionaire.. Wonder how much guaranteed money Rory and others had? Lots of young golfers now disillusioned as their must have equipment is relegated to the close out rack..Wonder how much Phil Knight retiring had to do with it? Accountants probably looked at the cash black hole golf equipment was. It sounds like they only ever made money on TW clothing and to a lesser extent shoes..

 

Tiger should start a club company, or maybe not as he doesn't have parsons money..As Phil M said low tech equipment..

 

Feel sorry for Michelle Wie, she will probably have to buy her own clubs with the state of her game. Nobody would want their clubs in her hands as she army golfs in tournaments.. Charl Schwartzel looks pretty smart, or read the tea leaves when they didn't offer to re up him. Very few wind up at TM as they appear to be the next to assume room temperature. Adidas not having much luck dumping them or Adams..

 

With all the companies going under or teetering finally Srixon will get a good share of the market..

I'm watching to see what happens with equipment vs apparel sponsors. Some brands (Titleist/FJ) don't seem too keen on players mixing and matching clubs and apparel.

If you go to any major collegiate tournament or any of the major Amateur Tournaments in the US (US Amateur, Trans-Miss, Pacific Coast, North-South, etc.) I would posit that over half of the collegiate players participating use Nike equipment, most likely because their college has a deal with Nike. What happens when a Nike-sponsored college athletic department can no longer get golf equipment swag from Nike for their golf team?

Hope Nike takes care of the guys at the Oven. 80-90% of the staff was let go effective immediately. The shop guys, MT and DF are still around taking care of athletes through the end of the year. Wonder if Tiger will start his own line of clubs? Really sucks for the R&D guys who relocated families to work at Nike.

I like both guys but Tiger is done... once the back is toast and the confidence erodes due to personal problems it's over. Rory doesn't NEED to win like Tiger did and is I'm sure a healthier happier human no matter how he does each week.

Yeah, I'll never understand why some people have just hatred / bias against something as mundane as a golf equipment company. If they're not for you that's fine, but why get all worked up about it? Why celebrate failure? It's a weird deal.

Wonder if Tiger will start his own line of clubs? Really sucks for the R&D guys who relocated families to work at Nike.
