Phil and Bones parting ways after 25 years! (MERGED)

I hope LaCava wakes up and hitches the wagon to Phil

I was thinking this too but I bet Tiger is taking good care of him. Getting paid while spending time with the fam is tough to beat.

Yeah Tiger has always been "generous" with his money..

Alright so go ahead and provide a logical reason why Joe hasn't picked up another bag. The dude was on DJ's bag and now hasn't cashed a check in what, two years? I think not.

You are correct. LaCava mentioned at the end of 2016 that Tiger had taken care of him. And if he wanted he could loop for somebody else. I'm sure LaCavas own words won't be good enough for some here.

When Tiger Woods announced a step back from the game in August 2015, it wasn't just him who would be out of a job: What would be the fate of long-time caddie Joe LaCava? Luckily for LaCava, his boss was understanding in more ways than one. Speaking with The New York Times, LaCava said Woods has looked after him from Day 1 until the 14-time major winner's return. While he didn't go in to financial specifics, LaCava and Woods had an understanding that LaCava could caddie for other players if he so chose.

But ever the loyal companion, LaCava, who helped Woods to nine victories, never strayed, just in case his boss came back early.

"It's hard to tell a guy, 'Look, I'm going to come out here, but Tiger might call me next week and I'll be back at it, because when Tiger comes calling I'm going to go back to work for him,'" LaCava told the Times. "That's just not the right thing to do. So I wasn't going to go work for anyone else."

"I understand what you are asking and what I'll tell you is this: Tiger has been great to me since day one,'' LaCava said. "And he continues to be great and very generous with me.'' LaCava understandably does not want to delve into those details, but as Woods has suffered through injuries and layoffs, it is sometimes easy to forget that he has won nine times -- each with a first-place check of $1 million or more -- going back to the end of 2011.

Could someone smarter than I, explain what the veto is?

Actually kinda fun. So bones got one veto per year. It was meant so phil could be talked out of hitting one shot a year. No matter what, if bones said veto to a shot, Phil would hit the shot bones wanted him too, not the silly 99% risk, 1% reward shot phil likes to try.

just read the story, is it weird that bones is not retiring and phils brother is on the bag for the rest of the season

I thought that was interesting as well.

ps: I wasn't aware this had already been posted. I received a "breaking news alert" and thought it was just that, breaking news. For those that I have offended by starting this thread, get over it and find something meaningful to be upset about.

Quite right. If anyone wants to be upset or offended please allow me to be the target. If you need me to say something to be offended please just detail what direction I should go. Im here to serve. Getting upset because you can type faster when hot news comes across and someone else is starting (a soon to be merged from what I've seen here in the past) another thread on it is a little silly. As always, thanks.

Thats too bad.

They went together like lamb and tuna fish.....

Or spaghetti and meatballs if you prefer that analogy.

Lol... Lamb and tuna, huh? Never thought of that combo.

The fact that Bones put up with FIGJAM for 25 years should make him an automatic candidate for Sainthood.

2006 called. They want their post back.

I've now seen FIGJAM enough times that I had to Google it. Had no clue (oh the humanity on the vulgarity) what it stood for. But it came out in 2005 so you sir are WRONG. Having now made my controversial post of the day, I can have my nighttime medicine. Thanks.

That's too bad, they made a good team over the years. But inevitably tour pros end up blaming someone for their poor play and it's usually the caddy. PM doesn't seem to listen to anyone anyway so I guess it wouldn't make a difference in his mind. I'm sure other pros are lining up to get Bones to join their team. If PM doesn't figure out that you need to hit it in the fairway he's not going to win whether Bones or someone else is on his bag anyway. And how is PM's brother going to caddy and be Rahm's manager anyway.

If I'm Spieth, I at least put out feelers to Bones. I'd dump Greller in a heartbeat for Bones.

On a recent podcast, Kip Henley said Greller was excellent. Doubt that happens.

Michael's an excellent caddie and Jordan is a Class

Act~

Based on Michael's performance, that would be a classless act

This is what happens when a caddie thinks he's more important than the player, Stevoline.

Yep, Stevitis!!.,

It's debilitating!!

Cannot see Bones caddying for a young player with a busier schedule with those artificial knees. I would guess someone with a lighter schedule. Another way out there idea, but possibly LPGA?

All great partnerships end. Been a fantastic run arguably the best pairing ever this side of Woods-Williams.

Guessing you never heard of Jack Nicklaus and Angelo Argea

https://en.wikipedia...ki/Angelo_Argea

Back in those days caddies didn't travel all over the country or world like they do now.

In the US Open you were assigned a local caddie, Nicklaus had a local gym teacher caddie for him at Pebble in '72, he basically was assigned to Jack in a random drawing. I read a cool article about it a few years ago.

The Masters you were required to use a ANGC caddie

The Open, too expensive for them to travel so you had a local you used.

West coast swing or Hawaii? probably not, but maybe if you were Jack.

Back then caddies mostly stuck to the 3 essentials. Show up, shut up and keep up. There were exceptions such as Angelo and Herman with Trevino.

That's right. I caddied on Tour when I was just sixteen (in '70/'71) and had no trouble at all getting a bag every day when I didn't have a job for the week. I went to a private high school that let us out for "midsession" from November through February and I'd take off with the Tour. Most of the players were super penny-pinchers and loved getting a young kid on their bag. It was better than the alternative; a Tour caddy who'd show up drunk half the time and not at all the rest of the time. Also, the caddies were always hustling their pro for more money...never knew when to shut up. They'd also do nothing for the first 14 holes until they'd get over their hangover, then they'd run around the last few holes and kissing a** hoping for a better tip at the end of the day/week. The Tour caddies in those days were a really motley crew, believe me, and their lives revolved around gambling, drinking, and drugs...all of them were hardcore alcoholics and mostly older guys. The only one that I remember being on the young side was Andy M, Johnny Miller's caddy. He was a good guy, and serious about his work. I worked with professional caddies back home so I sort of knew what to expect but those guys scared me....they were a seriously hardcore bunch. The point is, professional, one-bag caddies were only for the top 10 players and very few of the players relied on their caddies for anything other than carrying the bag, etc.. There was barely money for the pro to get himself and his family around, much less a caddy. Butch Harmon would pay me $20/day I think....no tip, that's for sure. I must not have been as good as I thought I was.

Definitely sad to see this duo split. I feel their short press releases were probably very truthful and they will remain close. My guess is their caddy/player relationship was (naturally) becoming strained recently and a distraction.

I do think this shake up for Phil could spark something. He's been playing very well the past two years, probably best player to not have a win to his credit. Let's hope this gets him going in the right direction.

I caddied for an LPGA pro recently (first time), and they want you to everything for them except wipe their bums. How far to that bunker, how far to the dogleg, how to come into the green, wind, will the green release, what's behind the green, pace off, add/subtract, add paces on, know how the ball will break after landing. Then the menial stuff of cleaning balls and clubs, and carrying their 70 lb bags, and don't move or scratch your nose in a way that might annoy them. All for $100 over 8 hrs each day. I used to make that in less than 2 hrs of work. What a rough job, although interesting. I'm glad I did it though cause now I know I will not be pursuing that as a semi-retirement career.

I think it comes down to the veto to be honest. This season more than any other it has been noticeable that Bones has handed Phil a club, only for him to put it back and grab another one. Last three events in particular and without getting the results to justify being overriden, I think bones has had enough.

I used to be a Mickelson fan. The way he treated Tom Watson at the Ryder Cup ended it for me.

The fact that anyone can still root for him after that is beyond me. It was beyond classless.

I like watson... But he earned that treatment .. If you proclaim my way or the highway to the whole crowd , the law of averages says at least one will buck you.... and when Phil is in that bunch the odds go way up...as i can remember he only told the truth... if any falsehoods were reported by Phil im all ears

Regardless of Watson's style (and neither of us were there so we'll never know exactly how it really was), you don't do what Phil did at the post event presser. Classless and self serving. But Phil is the master of self serving.

"My way or the highway" has worked pretty well for Bill Belichick. But it is different as he's dealing with men as opposed to a handful of spoiled country club brats.

"You think we play the same stuff you do?"
