Hit only 7 iron demo iron today. I love it. So far, bery forgiving and looks to my eye at address.

I may have to order these in 4-6, but I have to hit and test them more for sure.

I am struggling between JPX 900 F and the 790's. They are both very comparable, but the JPX win in the feel department. The 790's are a little too low spin also. I was seeing 5k on the skin for a 7 iron. Only the last shot was mine.

In every review of the P790 by Shiels, Crossfield, Newton monitor data, the spin was low for the 7 iron.

And this was the main reason for the increased distance. Low COG did help maintain the height for a normal 7 iron.

You're launch angle is fine for this type of club. Much like the driver, high launch and low spin is where it's at as long as you have a good landing angle to stop the ball. What was your landing angle?

Thanks Bob. Yes, a picker for sure.

Not sure of the landing angle. This was just me messing around at PGA SS on GC2 with the Modus 120x shaft.

I really like that shaft, but might try a S instead of X next time. Seems like it compares in feel to the PX LZ shaft.

Your launch monitor numbers are very similar to mine. I'm a picture of the ball as well, seldom taking much of a given. I'm sure you're landing angle will be close to 47° which will be perfectly fine for this type of golf club.

I played a round with a demo set with the DG105 S300 on dried out greens using the TP5x ball. These clubs have good stopping power due to their high penetrating flight and steep landing angle.

I have a set on order with my club builder that'll get the OT Tour 100 shafts and another being built with Modus 105 shafts.

scheduled a TM fitting for tomorrow at a nearby course...does anyone know if these fitters from TM use trackman, or what kind of data they will be able to show? do they come with several different shafts, etc, or is this more of whether someone wants to purchase the stock style of irons?

never done this before, so looking for some color.

I had a fitting at a Taylormade event here in Delaware; they had a Flightscope and Trackman on site. They had a small laptop to show the numbers; and if you have a my fitting account with TM they will email you all the data.

Sign up from the TM website? Last time I did, the guy had everything you're asking, trackman, tons of shafts, tons of heads. And they'll write down your specs on a form. Enjoy! Pace yourself though, you'll hit a TON of balls.

Finally hit a 790 7 iron today!!!!!!! Thing feels NICE!!! They are long. Not only long but, looooooooooooooooong. 25 yards past my normal 7 iron distance. Pure feeling. may end up ditching my 770/4 iron for a 790/4 iron. Great sticks.

The one I hit was 22 yes further than my 7 iron but part of that was my irons are too upright, I ended up needing 2* flat

790's showed up today - 720

Tee Time on Saturday for a maiden run.

Have a fun/great round, look forward to your insight post match as I won't receive mine til early next week.

Thanks - turned out to be a fun go with them once I got adjusted. One thing I didn't see during my fitting that showed up on the course was a slight left tendency. I switched to a higher compression ball on the back 9 and that straightened out pretty quickly. The high launch and above average distance in the fitting translated to the round. They are just so easy to get through the turf and compress the ball in a package that looks players club but is really GI. I've seen comparisons to the M1 irons and in my view the 790 is much more playable and forgiving. Damn shame I couldn't put yesterday or a respectable score would have happened. Looking forward to hitting them again for a few rounds this week.

I'm 45 yrs old. I've been a DG S300 player forever too. Tried the PX 6.0 SS this year. I love both shafts but I'm going graphite in these irons to help the tendinitis issues I have in my hands. During testing, I fell in love with the DG 105! Everything I loved about the original DG but without all the extra weight.

Had a fitting today at my club and I am extremely impressed with what I experienced. I currently play a set of Edel irons built by club champion with steel fiber 95g shafts in them. I have played them for 1.5 years and can't find anything to beat them. Today was different. Was able to compare 7 vs. 7 on trackman (both with steel fibers) and these are the numbers

Edel:

  • Average ball speed: 112 mph
  • Average Carry: 162
  • Angle of decent:44

790:

  • Average ball speed: 117
  • Average carry: 172
  • Angle of decent:46

Keep in mind my Edel 7 iron is 33 degrees vs. the 790. What impressed me most is despite the loft difference I was able to get similar spin and better decent angle to stop the ball with the 790s. For the first time in a long time considering buying a new set of irons

You will see more speed with the 790 as it has a stronger loft than the Edel.

Spin should be more in the Edel with more loft and same swing speed...if not must conclude fresh grooves in the 790 are making the difference.

Understand what you are saying about loft however the launch angle was higher with the 790 and the decent angle was better. The technology allows for lower lofted irons. Not sure why we get hung up on the loft of the club. I am looking for performance and consistency. If a club had a loft of 35 degrees and performed great I would use that

Spin is due to loft; height due to COG/loft.

If the Edel is not spinning as much with more loft then it is likely due to the grooves.

If the Edel had the same fresh grooves and the same swing speed then you will see more spin in that head vs the 790.

Just don't get mislead by the spin numbers.
