Mine were a set of McGreggor blades/persimmons that my grandfather bought me at auction. Before that, I just used my moms Wilson Staffs - also blades.

Let's go back in time to 1963. My brother trades our last functioning tricycle to the trash man for a mixed bag of golf clubs he had hanging on the side of his truck.

These included some Spalding FWs from about 1960, and some of the 1930-ish steel-shafted clubs with fake wood lamination on them. These were mashies, niblicks, all that good stuff. I used them my first year as a player, and actually carried the niblick (a thin-bladed 9i) until my early 20s.

A year later, my dad gets us a Sears beginners set: Driver, 3W, 3, 5, 7 ,9 and a putter, with bag. Many years later I checked the lie angle of the irons, and they were about 3° upright. (No wonder I had an early swing like a hockey slap-shot.)

Don't feel bad for me: by early summer 1966, I had both TopFlite Synchrodyned irons and Wilson fairway woods.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |

Half set of used Ben Hogan Apex irons my Dad bought for me from Gog Magog golf club just outside of Cambridge in the U.K. Not sure I have ever been so excited before any golf purchase since that day. Gradually added woods after that plus I am sure I had some POS putter. My first full set of irons was Hogan Apex Round Sole irons that I played all through college

The first clubs I used as a little kid were a random assortment of bargain clubs, but the first actual "set" that I owned was a set of Hogan radials my parents picked up at a yard sale for probably no more than $10. I didn't learn until much later that they were actually pretty good clubs, albeit not exactly perfectly matched for a mediocre junior.

1996: A half set of Lynx blade-like irons (4,6,8,P) that I shared with my brother, so when we played together I only had two irons; a TM burner metal wood 3 from the 80’s, a green 5 wood with a green graphite shaft. And the pride of my cheap-a** bag: a real and current model Big Bertha driver that I got from my rich uncle because he just upgraded to the titanium version.

My dad built me a set of Golfworks Jr-Pro when I was 3 or 4 years old. I think he used it as an excuse with my mother to get into clubmaking. Used to beat the s*** out of everything I could find in the backyard with those things.

My dad built me the same set when I was 9. My daughters and nephews a have used them as well.

My first set was a half set of component irons from a guy in town who like to build clubs. My second set was a set of used ping eye irons that turned out to be hot. I had to give them back when the county sheriff showed up to ask about them.

Introductory set was a beginners set of some type of Spaldings - 3W, 3,5,7,9,W

First "set" was a set of Browning 440 irons and some type of persimmon driver and 3W which I used through high scool

After college built myself a Golfworks component set - my first dabbling in club assembly :)

My first "real" set of irons that I bought myself were Ram Laser cavity backs in late 80s or early 90s
