I was thinking of Melhorn but looks like you are right, the story is about Laffoon:

 

That's just one of many myths about Laffoon. Such as the one about him tying a putter to the bumper of his car and dragging it cross-country as punishment. Not true. But this is true: He would sometimes hold a wedge or iron out of the car door, dragging it on the road surface to grind the sole and sharpen the leading edge.

At the very least Wild Bill had putting woes though:

 

In 1934, Bobby Jones wrote about his own issues with occasional nerviness while putting, but held up Mehlhorn as the best (or is that worst?) example. Jones wrote about watching Mehlhorn attempt a 3-foot putt, only to twitch so badly in the attempt that he knocked the ball across the green and into a bunker.

Id be wanting a lesson from Paul Wilson out of Las Vegas Nevada. Always been intrigued with his approach to the golf swing which I implement now just watching his Youtube videos. I like his approach since I have always been such a smoother swinger of the swing. I still hit it out there aways, not quite tour distance and definitely not Golfwrx distance but I manage around the course enough to shoot better than I think. Hoping one day I can visit his school and spend a few days dialing in my swing to consistently shoot better scores.
