Which club in your bag was the biggest waste of money?

For most of this year I’d have said 3W, because I paid full price new ($220 in 2016) and went several rounds without using it once.

It could be 5 iron, since it shows up for a good shot only once out of every 3-4 rounds. Most of the time I’d be better off hitting 6i and pitching up. But a single iron is only about $150 new.

So the winner/loser is my putter, the Bettinardi iNOVAi 3.0 CS. Which I absolutely love, but spent $300 new and could easily be replaced a with $30 putter without losing strokes. Also I bought it at the end of its release cycle, so lightly used models starting going for $150-200. At least I bought mine on store credit instead of straight up cash.

UPDATE: I hit one absolutely perfect Heavenwood shot yesterday to the apex of a dogleg par 4. I couldn't have placed the ball better.

Because of that one perfect shot, I now declare this club to be worth every penny.

I think my biggest waste of money has been the quest for the perfect driving iron. I've bought loads over the last three or four years, some new, some secondhand, but I generally end up swapping them out because I DON'T NEED ONE! Well, OK, I rarely, rarely need one.

I ordered a Titleist T-MB (2016) 2i back in 2016. Soon sold it because I realised that it wouldn't kick my 4w out of the bag.

I've ordered Honma TW-U driving irons (#3 and #4), hit them, loved them, but eventually sold them because I hardly ever used them (well, OK, the #4 I probably should have kept hold of, and the #3 when I used it was great).

I've bought secondhand only to sell later 3 or 4 various Callaway driving irons (Apex and older models), a Ping Rapture 2i that I probably should have kept hold of, two Srixon U45s in different lofts that I decided weren't for me, a Mizuno H4 4i (I really have kept hold of that...) and an old model Fli-hi (#3, IIRC), and an A-Grind #3 that I paid too much for and got too little back for when I sold it a month later.

I think I am missing a couple there, as well.

The only reason I've never had a TM UDi in the mix is because they are like hen's teeth in Japan.

I now have a Honma TW-U Forged 3i that I like a lot....but never actually put in play because my 7w is more versatile.

I really think I should buy a Ping EYE2 1i or 2i and have done with it.

I was given a driver fitting and driver. Top 100 fitter, all that implies. I was 64, one year from neck fusion, ss of -90, and he fit me into a driver "they're all the same" with a $400.00 ts shaft. I tried and tried to play the stupid thing, finally gave up, pulled the adapter, tried several different shafts, still hate the head. Something in the neighborhood of a thousand dollar failure.

Last year it would've been my 19* hybrid, but that was because I wasn't playing much at all and hadn't given this club a decent chance since acquiring it. Now it's a trusted weapon, so I don't have a club that fits the "wasted money category" - I use and trust them all and if a club didn't work for me, it wouldn't have a home in my bag.

(Interesting to see a fair number of mentions in this thread for the 3w - the Destroyer of Rounds.)

I have a garage cabinet filled with shafts. Been collecting over twenty-five years. None of them were a waste of money because I learned from each what specs don't work. It's been fun. :beach: Biggest waste of money, expensive bourbon.

I would probably have to go with a T-MB 3 iron... i knew I wasn't going to like it because of the shaft when I bought it... and I was right...

Otherwise... every 3 wood I've owned since 2004 when I dumped my first V-Steel until I tried my current 915

Cleveland Rotex 2.0 wedges. Not bad, just not great. They looked good, had good spin, the grinds were good, the feel was ok for a cast wedge... just not great. I traded up for the Mizuno T7 and they are grrreeeaaat!

Not a club, but a shaft. I’ve been playing a M3 3 HL with a Diamana Ahina 70 Stiff. Great off the tee but not so much off the deck. I installed a new UST V2 7F4 and it’s been all over the place. Prob going back to the Ahina.

Definitely putter. At any given moment I'm testing a half dozen of them, but none of them "work". I end up tweaking endlessly, then settling for the one that gives me the most familiar, consistent miss and just living with the results.

I thought the TS driver was the biggest waste. I kept it all of a week and went to a jpx 900 driver. Too bad, I’m a Titleist fan boy and just couldn’t get along with it on course. It was great on the monitor though.

I would say my driver at the moment. Upgraded to an XR16 driver. The shaft that is in the driver loads too much according to my instructor and it is costing me during rounds. I don't get a consistent shot shape and have no idea where my misses are going to go. Had multiple rounds where I could of broke 90 this year but had issues getting off the tee.

That driver wont be in the bag at the beginning of the year.

I have an XR16 driver that I tried to force it to work.

Went thru about 8 different shafts. Finally switched drivers, and problem solved.
