He doesn't seem like the most exciting guy but his golf game is anything but boring. With the exception of DJ because he is not playing, he is waxing the other guys you mentioned. If you would rather be like Tiger and sitting way back then good for you but I am sure that Tiger would be quite happy to be playing like Justin Rose is at the moment.

Yes, I think he is "boring." No doubt he is a great talent and deserves to win. I don't quite agree with the above thread that equates being a really great golfer to not being boring.

It's tough to really quantify what makes a golfer boring, but I'd say it has to do with how happy/interested a golfer makes you when they win combined with how often they win. Rose is probably at the top of my list of guys who win a lot but who I don't really care if they win. Usually when the Masters comes around some of my friends and I talk about who we would least like to win, and I usually say guys like Rose, Kuchar, Webb Simpson, etc. I don't mean any offense to these guys or think they are not talented!

What do you think the criteria should be?

To me personally , Rose is boring and comes off snobbish. I like watching the guys with personalities, Mickelson, Perez, Rahm, Poulter etc. They really should put Pat Perez on the air more . Seems like they are afraid to follow his round.

Did you guys listen to him in the Jim Rome podcast? Loved it. Rome said it was one of his top 5 shows all time.

Grew up a Jack fan, still am, and going to get into hot water for the comparison, but Jack wasn't exactly filled with a lot of charisma at times.

Agree with the vanilla reference several posts above and I don't think Justin moves the needle for a lot of folks over here, but I really do have a hard time watching someone take apart a course surgically and calling that "boring" - I think if my game were more "boring" I'd be a lot better golfer.

Anyway, still opposed to random "I don't like this golfer this week" threads, but to those engaged in the discussion I certainly understand.

He's really grown on me. Has been good in the Ryder Cup. Will be interesting to see if he wins - still needs to work on closing out (Sergio says "thanks").

He's quite typically upper crust English, the Hugh Grant of golf, somebody successful and wealthy but boring and nobody really cares what they're up to.

I'm sure Pat will get plenty of air time if he gets into contention anytime - but therein lies the problem.

Beat me too it! They show plenty of the guys who are contending and winning week in week out like you know, a Justin Rose sort of guy.

Of course, even if you do that it might not mean that the media want to speak to you afterwards..sorry Brooks!

I enjoy watching him in terms of technique and the like, but not, he's not exactly a dynamic watch that I'd tune in for alone. That said, I don't think I'd change my personality much if that stoicism helped me to play such consistent golf after coming back from a very difficult early career. Brits aren't exactly known for being bombastic, hah.

I do have to say that it's strange the little things that can make a difference. I really enjoyed watching KJ Choi a lot because of his quiet intensity, and Dufner was fun because of his waggle-into-smashy play style despite being super subdued through his whole round, but Keegan Bradley puts me to sleep. I think there are just subtleties to certain players that tend to pull most people in while watching them.

If you've seen Rose after a round with his family and the like you can see that he's a very warm, open guy. He seems to do a very good job of keeping his focus in his way, and if that way doesn't move the needle for everyone myself included I just don't think he cares much, hah.

I don’t think Rose is boring but he doesn’t carry a broadcast. Put him up there with Rory, Rahm, Jordan, DJ battling it for the lead and all is good. It’s a difficuly mindset to play carrying a big lead. I could see him losing tomorrow but not to Scott, more likely to Rahm. I would love to see Rory come in with a 64 and see how that does. Rory is in a good spot away from the leaders but close enough that if he shoots lights out he can win.

I'm still laughing at his interview with Jim Everett.

That was truly genius because it was staged and they pulled it off. It Got Rome a lot of air time on other stations as I recall.

Most really good golfers are "boring". Unless you find elite golf entertaining

I think amateurs like us like to watch golfers who can/will get out of position and them hit hero shots or blow up on a hole come back with a string of birides, etc. That style of golf speaks more to ams since we can relate it more. (minus the string of birdies of course)

Rose is consistent as a clock, rarely gets wildly out of position, does everything well but nothing exceptional (ie super long), doesn't really get fired up on the course, super bland in interviews. It's almost robotic, albeit highly effective.

Obviously an incredible golfer, but fairway, green, putt doesn’t necessarily seem that entertaining on television. There’s almost never a hero shot and not much emotion. If he blows a tournament on the 72nd hole, it’s going to get an “oh well” out of me because there’s no emotional investment on my part.

If you’re a tournament director or the network, I’d guess that Justin Rose isn’t exactly the kind of player you want as your defending champion. He’s never going to be a guy who sells tickets. Few folks are ever going to tune in because he’s in contention.

Seems like a great guy and he’s incredibly successful. He’s probably fine without my adoration.

I understand exactly what you mean but I can’t really put a finger on it either. He’s incredibly “vanilla”. Dull. Just Not much charisma I guess.

But he is the best, most intense "vanilla" in the world. Everyone spends the entire round waiting to see if that lazy-eyed stare ever morphs to a blink, but it almost never happens...
