Justin Rose v Adam Scott - Who has the better career?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, why do some people think Scott's record is so much better? He has 4 more PGA wins less an Olympic Gold/2 Eurotour wins. If you look at the quality of tournaments, each of them have 4 wins that are lower tier tournaments, so that would definitely put the number of quality wins in Scott's favor.

Personally, I think the top 2s, top 10s, Ryder Cup/President Cup is not worth much...

I wouldn’t say much better, but the Players is significant. Olympic gold sounds cool, but the Rio tournament field quality left a lot to be desired.

Really interesting thread. Before having seen the stats I would have said Rose, however I think that is a recency bias since he's been so good lately. However when you see the stats you have to say that you'd probably take Scott.

Great thread!

The results of the poll are a recency bias. Or, people answering the question on who they think will end up with a better record (based on extrapolating the most recent results...)

Agreed.

But Scott is still young enough to have a few more good years if the putter behaves.

Am i missing something? Adam Scott hasn't won for nearly 3 years, and apart from last weekend hasn't looked like winning either.

Rose in the meantime is the opposite, he looks like he could win at most tournaments he enters

So yes a very similar record at the moment, but i can only see Rose getting ahead, way ahead

The question is who has the better career -- as of right now.

Not who do you think will have the better career at the end.

He wasn't far away at the PGA in August but that aside, it is a fair point. Things have been working generally upwards for him as well. In May of last year he was down to 76th in the world but he is not back into the top 30 and you have to think he is feeling good about his game going forward. I don't know if he is down to play at Riveria but he has a good record there so I would definitely look to see him moving on further up the rankings as we move into spring.

Two of my favorite golfers and definitely two of my favorite swings! Both have had really nice careers.

I feel Scott has been sort of an underachiever. It feels so wrong to call a major winner an underachiever, but I feel like he should have a couple more. The 2012 British Open for sure....

Either way, I hope both have plenty of good golf left.

this is one of those instances where a players title makes the difference ... not a major, but more important than all the others ...

Both have worthy careers. Scott started off hot and cooled down to a whisper. Rose progressed slowly for a number of years but has matured into a formidable player.

All in all, I estimate Rose will have the "better" career overall when done.

Most would probably agree and there's nothing wrong with that.

But show me the consensus view for the next few years for:

Tiger Woods at the end of 2008

Rory McIlroy at the end of 2014

Jordan Spieth at the end of 2015

Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, or Justin Thomas when they were winning 5x per year

And then what they actually did.

Personally, I think major #2 is the main factor that will decide "who's better" between these two players (think it hardly matters if Rose wins 3-5 more tournaments over the next few years). And I'd say the odds that either one of them win another major are a lot closer than than the difference in how each of them has played over the last few years. Both of them have the game to win another one - they just need to get relatively hot for a week and catch a break here or there (lucky bounce, someone else screws up or doesn't go crazy, etc).

I have never felt as deflated after a major than I was in 2012 when Scott threw the Open away. He then had good chances to win in 2013 and 2015 as well. Both years he was in the lead on the final day but managed to conspire to not win. He is my favourite player and The Open is my favourite major so it sickens me that he has not won it even once.

2 Majors > 1 Major - Scott. I'll give Rose some extra points for the Gold Medal, but still doesn't push him over the top. The answer might change at the end of this year, Rose is playing some good golf.

Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia are about the same age, have posted similar results in their career and play a similar game to one another.

Amazingly similar! Based on recent results it seems like Garcia and Scott are close to moving into the what could have been column which is a real shame given how good they both are. Imagine how many wins they would have had if they had the tenacity of someone like Spieth who simply does not have the physical gifts that they have but Spieth has much more up top.

I did not know Scott's record was that impressive until you laid it out. I would say they're in a dead heat at this point. Even though I agree that the US Open is tougher to win than the Masters (smaller field, same course every year so experience helps) I'd say the major category is a wash. Olympic medal? Meh. The field was not even the best 144 golfers in the world. It was the two best from each country so there was a pretty quick drop off in talent as you went down the list.

I agree Rose is at the top of his game right now so he may begin pulling away from Adam now. But if Scott gets his putting on track it may be interesting.

2012 was horrible to watch. I still remember in 2013 a commentator saying something like "Adam Scott is doing his best impression of Adam Scott" as he stumbled on the back 9. It seems like 2012 Open is the only one he really blew. A bunch of others he could have won and had he won them all he'd be viewed quite differently (add 2011 Masters and 2018 PGA to the list above). I hope he can get another one, as he has/had the potential and generally seems like a nice guy.

Just be thankful you aren't a Phil Mickelson fan (I am). While he's won more, he's also found a way to not win it more as well. Watching him, it just feels like something is going to go wrong.

No one has mentioned that Adam has won a Tour Championship (before the FedEx Cup era), which Rose has yet to accomplish.

Are they HOF worthy careers at this point?

I think Sergio definitely, his Ryder Cup stats get him there alone. And I think the Gold medal will bring Rose over the finish line. Not Scott yet....

I’d take Adam Scott on girlfriend quality alone, I assume Justin Rose still lives at home with his mum?

Both golfers are married, Rose since 2006, Scott since 2014.
