The year was 1989. He was playing in the GoodYear Classic at Humewood South Africa as part of the Sunshine Tour.

 

Back then there were no fancy range setups. The pros had to bring their own practice balls and their caddie had to shag them.

 

So I watch Wayne warm up. He takes out 2 sleeves of brand new Titleist Professionals and proceeds to whack them into the bush.

 

I say to him (I was 19 at the time)... “sheez Wayne, why would you do that. I don’t even get to play with golf balls that nice”

 

He looks at me and says: “Everything in life is relative”

Must be a total drag for Gary. Some obvious dysfunction going on there...unfortunately. Likely plenty of blame to go around to Father and Son, but the worse part is that these things have now spilled out into the public in the form of arrests/charges.

I could curl your nose hair with quotes from local judges in open court on the record. You’re totally in their world. No schedule exists except the one that suits the whim of the day.

Had a group of 4 teenage boys vandalize a piece of investment property we own last summer. When they arrived for their appointed court date at 9am on a Friday morning wearing basketball shorts, the judge held them until every other item had been addressed for the day. By that time, it was 5:45pm and the judge lectured them for a solid half-hour on appearance. She placed them in juvenile detention until the next appointed court session, which was the following Tuesday.

 

It's doubtful those boys will ever wear shorts to court again!

Madison and I got to Play 12 holes with him over at Oakmont and I thought he was a putz, but he fawned all over Maddie and she thinks that he’s a great guy, lol. To me, he comes off as plastic patronizing and very self promoting. I will say that he could still get around the course but all he talked about and pointed out on every hole was his 36 hole performance in ‘73, when he had the 36-hole lead, meanwhile, the holes looked virtually nothing like they did in 1973(this was in 2012) but that didn’t stop Ole FIGJAM, lmao.

 

So on #8, I asked him where he was after his drive in ‘73 round 3, lmao, as he took a triple on his way to a 77 that day??, and a serious slide down the board, lmao.

 

Madison gave me this look like “WTF?,” and Gary developed geriatric hearing loss as he looked right at me and then to Madison and asked the distance??

 

I also asked him what happened in that third round and he did have a funny response that I’ll always remember, “she bit back,”??

 

That’s good!!

 

Anyhoo, the guy was never home when this putz was a kid and as has been mentioned, he wasn’t the greatest example, and though this is unrelated to this, I will say again that Tom Watson is to this day, or at least in 2014, when I last saw him, convinced that Player cheated that day, and when Madison asked Jack he said only that it was “in the past,” and nothing more.

 

Madison will probably have a different take but trust me, you guys that think like I think would see what I saw. I really wanted to like the guy and I will say that he was a gentleman and extremely cordial to anyone who approached him and he did give his hat to my caddie, which was cool(I walked and Gary & Madison shared a cart).

 

Hey, no one’s perfect but I guarantee that the guy left it all on the course and gave everything that he had.

 

He may not be one of my faves but he is a Champion.

 

No one did more with less than the black knight!

You will always have a special place in my heart as you may not remember this though when I first joined, and I had 30-40 posts under my belt and I posted a thread about how nauseating I found the elitist attitude at some private clubs, and I got into it with Brian, lmao.

 

He since has become one of my closest friends on the board but back then I was like “WTF, who is this clown,” lmao, and I’m sure that he was thinkin the same thing and a few other guys jumped in on his side and I was like, “damn, this is gonna be fun,” lmao, however you posted and while taking my side, you made a laser accurate post, as you always do, and while I don’t mind goin it alone, I will always remember your posts that day and you followed up with a PM.
