For all of us in the Midwest and Northeast we are keenly aware these boys better be good mudders this week. It’s been a cold, WET spring to say the least. The Black is gonna play LONG and tough. BB

Watched this after work today. The "rough" isn't that bad, but beyond the rough where you get into the super tall stuff it gets nasty.

> > >

> > > The red is a great course, unfortunately you didn't get a full taste for the course, two of what I think are the best holes on the front are severely shortened. The first hole; a beast of a par 4 is playing only as a 95 yards par three, and the all up hill par five number 5 is playing as a short (300 yard) par 4. Not sure if they shortened any other holes out. The back nine is a beast from the tips. The red is a fun and yet challenging course to play. Hopefully you will get to play it again, perhaps do a red and black 36 in one day. That is an awesome day of golf (and you can take a cart on the red for the 2nd round).

you're saying they changed the first hole from a 470 yd par 4 to a par 3? ... that sucks ... why would they do that?

They typically use the first fairway on Red for hospitality and given how far in advance they set these things up they convert #1 to a par 3 so that the course can remain open for as long as possible. A real shame for those playing it, as #1 on Red is one of the best (and hardest) opening holes you will find

that is exactly what I found out when I played the Red about 2 weeks after the US Open in 2002...

the hole was still a short par-3 as some of the tents weren't fully removed yet..

at least it made me start with a par..

Ha! I remember playing the red, think it was the red, after an event and had to blast an approach shot over a tent. Hit a good shot too. Wasnt the first hole though.

If I was paired with that Brodie Smith guy I’d probably walk off of the course. His friend Patrick seemed cool, but Brodie? He sounds like the louder, bearded and slightly taller cousin of Billy Horschel.

per golf.com: _Tuesday is expected to be chilly, with temperatures hovering in the mid-to-high 40s coupled with a steady breeze blowing around 10 mph. More rain is expected on Tuesday evening. The good news? The weather should improve by Thursday. On Wednesday, the temperature is forecast to rise significantly, to a high of 64 degrees. Good article. I'm glad they found the proof. No doubt Tillinghast, the **Richard Rawlings** of the period, simply took credit for the entire project even though his input was only that of a consultant. I know more than a dozen architects and every single one of them is a credit monger.

What did they expect in May?

Spring in the last 5 or so years (maybe more) has been non-existent. We have had brutal March Like weather, wind and cold until late may early June, then poof... it turns to summer. Not like it used to be, when we had four distinct seasons on Long Island.

I would love to see what the average drive is this week. I am guessing it will be 30-40 yards shorter due to wet grass and no roll.

if it were august -- the 4th hole would be playing considerably under par...but in wet conditions, it will be much closer to par.

That is playing as a par 4 this week correct? I am not sure that hole as a par 4 will ever be "considerably" under par. If a par 5, you have a point.

This tournament will be won by the guy who can adjust to playing in cooler and slower conditions. It will take a combination of course knowledge and patience to stay out of the penal rough and bunkers and get his named engraved on Sunday. The guy who has his approach game under control will be best suited. The bombers will be tested.

And in that time, spring has become my least favorite time to play golf in the Northeast. Spring turf conditions are the worst.

Then you are probably correct. Isnt there a front nine par 5 playing as a par 4?

that would be #7; that hole will be beast if it's wet. tiger hit driver off the tee, then played a 5w AND and 3w and came up short...

Seems to me that the bombers have the most to gain with wet conditions and less roll. They can air it out and not run the ball through as many fairways. It will be the guy that can handle mud balls.
