What is the lowest temp you will golf in?

Living in Illinois, so the season is short. Tried getting a jump on it early last year. Played a round at Fyre Lake it was 43 and windy enough to bring the wind chill down to the mid 20's. It had also poured the day before, so the fairways were soaked and spongy. It was a trying and bone chilling day on the course....but at least we weren't at work

As long as it’s not frozen and I can play, I’ll probably play. Being up in the PNW if that’s not your mindset but you won’t be playing much golf for a while.

The wind chill is the thing that gets me. Gotta go into the 19th hole and sit by the fire after that.

This past fall was some of the coldest I have played in. It was upper 40's one day but sunny and not much wind so it actually was quite nice to play in. Not sure I'd play in much colder weather though.

Hope to get a quick 9 holes in this afternoon in Chicago if enough snow has blown / melted off the greens. High likely in the upper 30'a but very little wind (by Chicago standards) in the forecast. Just glad to be out and on the course!

Having spent my entire life (so far) within sight of I-10, I don't handle cold weather well. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be an upper limit to the temperatures I'll play in while walking with a push cart. Cold has a much greater effect on my bones and joints, and thus my game, than heat.

I have been out there when it has been below 30 I know that for sure...although that means that it is winter tees and greens with us and the question that I invariably ask myself nowadays is what is the point?! Beyond heading out for a walk and getting some fresh air, there is absolutely no benefit to it trying to swing with four layers on and land a ball on a tiny temporary green that has all the receptive qualities of a runway.

 

Amazed that anyone would even consider going out on a course when it is closed. They do that for a reason, respect it.

If its 50* and sunny with no wind, ill definitely play. 50* Sunny and 15mph wind is ok, not great but definitely playable. 50* with no sun and 25mph wind and im not enjoying it. Anything colder than 50* with high winds and zero sun and im staying inside.

Saturday was springlike.

 

Sunday was brutal, forecasted to be in the 40's, never got past 36. Throw in some gusty winds and...Dang!

 

Happy I went, even happier when it was over.

If our winter go to course(s) south of Canton Ohio let us play we will be there, period. It’s been sketchy more than once! We know on the bad days to bring a thin screw driver so you can the get the darn tee in the frozen ground. He equips all the carts with covers during the winter months, that plus blankets and heaters do the trick. BB

When I lived in New York my rule of thumb was, if it was forecast to be at least 40* at tee time I would go.

Needless to say I seldom got out in the Winter. Maybe once or twice, sometimes not at all. 1 year I DID play 5 or 6 times.

Now that I live in Florida, it's 65*,,,,,, and even then it better not be windy. LOL

It's not so much the temperatures as it is frozen greens I find problematic.

I played today. 32F with 15mph winds. Had my pick of any spot in the parking lot at the course at 12noon. In addition to judging wind and distance, had to judge how frozen the greens were. I hit 9 greens in reg but 3 of the greens were frozen and the ball bounced over.

Was really cold the first couple holes and had some regret but warmed up and it wasn't that bad in the 25F windchill.

I try to live by the 50 degree rule but in Michigan that would mean a lot less golf so unfortunately I break my rule A LOT! Wish I didn't have to.

My buddies an I will play in just about any weather as long as the course is open....nothing better than having the course to ourselves, regardless of the conditions

Excellent topic!! Bay area rains non stop from the end of Dec thru March and will dip into the high 30's / low 40's during the mornings. I gave up on trying to go out for the Saturday 7am tee time because its just too cold. My cutoff is prob around the 50 degree mark.

60* is my minimum.

This morning was 39* at sunrise, going to 55*. Had to cancel on the member/guest today. I don't think anybody showed.

 

Fortunately, it will be back to the 70's by end of week.
