You would think that after about 50,000 threads about blades vs CB's that these discussions could remain civil , but that just doesn't seem to be the case. It always turns into a "mines bigger" contest. Just don't get it.

Most wide sole players are higher handicaps, agree? They hit it fat for many reasons but the wide sole does not make you hit it fat.

To be fair, a cavity back iron that a tour player uses is VERY similar to a blade (think 919 Tour, Apex Pro, P760) however, your point is valid. The argument is grossly overblown in regards to distance control and fell and all that.

My theory is that amateurs don't track their performance like a professional does. An 1/8th of a shot per round can have a huge difference on the career of the guy at #98 on the FedEx Cup points list, where as an amateur would write that off as him not scoring any different with one vs. the other and so we play blades and say they're the same. An we're not wrong - I don't believe my handicap would be better with CB's. A handicap is an average where that 1/8th or 1/4 shot per round gets thrown out and only my best rounds are calculated. So in theory, it may make more sense for a Tour Pro to play CB's than an amateur.

As if the waters weren't muddy enough lol.

PGA tour creates new rule... all players must use super game improvement irons and woods... how much you want to bet the scores go up?

It’s a pointless debate. People crying cause they wish they played blades but can’t or know better. People playing blades that never hit more than a 7 iron into their crappy 6300 yard course so of course they play them well. Mr wizard types then chime in with stats when half the people that play would be DQed every other round from improper score keeping and rules infractions. Basically, a whole pile of who gives a s*#t, play whatever makes you happy and please play faster!

What says "everything" is your continued attempts at moving the goalposts (among other things).

So now we have more of the "Hey, look over there" defense,,,,,,,,,,,,,, LMAO

Originally I pointed out you contradicting yourself. Then you tried some (more ?) "flim flam".

And now ?!?!?!

Please show me where I said anything resembling that and I'll gladly apologize for same.

I totally agree. Personally I don't know anybody who's an expert on all things golf. And it's certainly not me.

All I've learned about golf is pretty much the same as most here. From reading and from experiencing.

The leading(?) "expert" here on CB vs blade, an engineer IIRC, who no longer participates in this foolishness, ended(?) once with "CBs are more forgiving, blades are more versatile/maneuverable". Vis-a-vis CB vs. blade, that works for me.

I think I'll just leave it at that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you're (all) welcome BTW. LOL

There is nothing more enjoyable than waiting on deck on a busy day behind that beginner golfer with his brand new set of blades (and often a wardrobe). He plays from the back tees, because that’s where he thinks He belongs. 20 minutes, and 40 practice swings, and SEVEN shots later, he is finally out of range so my group can now tee off! It’s going to be a wonderful day, Ugh. I’ve got no problem with people enjoying themselves with whatever tools they use. However, when it comes at the expense of everyone else on the course, it’s now becoming an issue who should be playing a particular type if club! Oh, and let’s not forget he has loud-ish music playing in his cart.

You said: ‘So now your premise is that someone playing an iron with a wide sole can't the the ground first ?’

Firstly, I have assumed that you meant: ‘...can’t HIT the ground first?’ in the above post which leads to the conclusion that you’re saying that someone playing an iron with a wide sole SHOULD be hitting the ground first.

If I’ve misread that I apologise, but that’s the way it came across.

I don’t think that wide sole clubs make you hit I think fat, just that I play with several players (and yes they are higher handicappers) that predominantly hit it fat and either don’t know they’re doing it or don’t care because the results are reasonable anyway. The same shots with thinner soled, less bounce clubs would go nowhere.

@wobgon provided a simple answer above. The blade user must hit the ball with the sweet spot, otherwise there's a distance cost/consequence that doesn't equal the same miss using GI-CB's, thanks to the cavity and peripheral design. Head designs are different with different purposes and different users. No part of one equals the other, except maybe terminology.
You're welcome to argue what ever theory's you want though. I however, chose to rely upon my thirty years of experience playing MB's, and leave theories to theorists. Have a good day

I said that in response to your "Just realised you play G20s and you wouldn’t know what a fatted shot feels like...that’s fine, each to their own". Forgetting what appears to be fairly obvious sarcasm, I took the "can't tell a fat shot" as in somehow "unable/impossible" to hit it fat, not that he couldn't TELL he hit it fat.

Words/inflection/nuance are all difficult to tell with the written word.

In any case, no worries. Water under the bridge.

Yes, 100%. I expect many don't know or care either and yes, wide soles and more bounce will help a slight miss.

I used to be a "digger". And B.L. (Before Lessons) my main miss was a "chunk". Even A.L. that was my main miss, just happened a LOT less often. About 3 years ago, 5 years A.G. (After G20s LOL), I worked to shallow out a bit and since then I definitely do catch a little break here and there because of the shallower AoA (AND the soles of course). Instead of, say with an 8 iron (140 for me), a 90 yard chunker I'll get a 120 or so, ummmmmm. "skimmer"(?), depending of course on how much ground I get.

That said though, I would expect any decent golfer, maybe about 15 or under, to realize he caught the ground first - whether or not he/she care is another story. LOL

The last time I played with rentals. I had a true wrx'r experience. I was playing callaway rogues.

They were chunky but the offset and appearace weren't that bad. I thought I would be ok.

They lacked feel. I never felt like I hit the sweet spot. Maybe I didn't, I'm a high single digit cap.

I had no sense of distance controI. I airmailed several greens. Like most I miss short more than long but not today. Could be that I was playing an unfamiliar course or the lack of a range finder though. It wasn't fliers or hotspots on the face.

I felt I couldn't get them in the air. The sand wedge took off with the trajectory of my 7 iron. So much for the need to jack lofts because there so easy to elevate.

If given a choice next time I'm renting blades. I want heavier stiffer shafts, even though I'm not wrx long.

Theres not that much difference between blades and cavity backs. I've played versions of both well and also stuggled with each. These definitely were not a good fit though.

Interesting video with Colin Montgomerie explaining why he used game improvement irons such as big bertha irons and x-12s . Also says his game always needed to improve so he used game impairment irons. 18 mins in.
