Rickie Fowler is a cautionary tale in overexposing a superstar

Now that I think about it more. In MLB I can think of a few superstars w/o championships that are still playing (so no HOF). DeGrom, Judge, Stanton, Tatis Jr., Nolan Arenado, Trout, Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole…

It is a sin and and outrage!

That Graig Nettles is not in the hof. Dope fielder and would pound in runs in big games!

I’d say he has the RBI total to be considered. 2 gold gloves. All time batting average definitely low for a HOF’er. No doubt an absolutely terrific player! Great pic. BTW!

He always do that!

And whenever you need a big HR, he produce.

Guy was dope! Awww, Mel Allen…

Do you still actively root for and support the Yankees? Watch a lot of games??

Lol….no. Yankees stink, I think after they blew that series they led by 3 games we threw in the towel.

But I wasn’t even following that closely at that point.

But when I was a kid, I watched every inning of basically every Yankees and Met game.

I still carry this baseball card in my wallet as an inspiration for motivation and just keep plugging away ; )

So you have a lot of great memories from when you followed ‘em as a kid. That’s awesome.

Tough crowd…..reaching #4 in the rankings is not lofty?

well, i'll admit a #4 ranking is lofty status, but i think the point i/we are making remains ... we tend to talk about rickie (and others) in terms of failure, which we shouldn't ... that #4 ranking (and general ranking for 5 years or so, as pointed out) indicates he's done very well as a pro golfer ... but for some reason, many of us golf nerds want to label him as someone who "failed", based on what we think he should've attained ... nothing about his game indicated he could be the next rory/dj/larry nelson/vigay/etc ... he's never had a huge year when he won 3 or 4 times ... i don't think he's failed or been over-exposed, but for many, he has - because they've attributed something to him that had no basis ... something along those lines ...

Lol…the first sentence of your post I replied to was this…

how many superstars can you name in other sports that never won a championship.

Of course most stars are I. The hall of fame in their respective sport.  That’s what a hall is.  And there are plenty of guys in their respective hall with no championships.

Perhaps we just have a different viewpoint and that’s cool.  You think that golf is just like tennis and all that matters is majors.  IMO true in tennis and not in golf.  I am more impressed by Tigers 82 than his 15 for example.  Andy North did not have a better career than Davis Love.  Sorry, Padraig but not better than Norman or Miller.

This has turned into a silly thread.  We are talking over each other and sure both are right.  Rickie surely was a star on the tour when he won 5 times on the PGA tour and had two big wins on the Euro tour.

But…has he performed like a star the last two seasons? Of course not.

when he won 5 times in 9 years makes him a superstar? then what is hunter mahan, harris english, keegan bradley, jason dufner

Scary thing it is that Rickie is still only 32 and he has had a full Tour Card since 2010. Seems like a good guy, would be good to see him get back the kinda player that he been but does he need that or have the fire needed to get back there? I am not sure that he does.

Guess we all have different definitions.  How many stars are there in other sports? NBA just has Lebron, Durant and Curry? #4 is not a star?  Baseball?  Is a perennial all star team player not a star?  Is being on the Ryder Cup consistently not the equivalent of an all star in other sports?
Your take sounds like just Jack and Tiger are stars…..or at minimum a lifetime tour exemption-20+wins- makes a star.  We have only had five of those in the last quarter century. Sounds like the Mt Rushmore of the game guys are the only stars?

You're right, different definitions but it is driven by winning at a high level.  I'm not nearly as restrictive as you suggested though. Rahm, dj, jt, Rory, Bryson, Brooks, Jordan, Colin, and I'm sure I'm forgetting an obvious one.  At no point was Fowler winning regularly like these guys have at points in their career.

All I would caution Rick on and he knows is not to take advice from people who are not near as successful in life as he has been. Even though his game isn't what it once was that he shouldn't take golf advice from them either. The people giving him golf advice pay to play golf and spend thousands on equipment. Rick gets paid to play.

Richard(Sherman, not Fowler) hasn't been so hot at life lately.

Hey, Rickie Sherman...I like the sound of that.

Rickie better get with the program.

These days the pga tour is the

Fire in the belly tour!

Guys out there biting the heads off rats to be in the show.

You see Collin Morikawa he look all chill. But I guarantee you he up at 5am and hittin balls in the fresh morning dew yo!

He might be laid back on the outside but inside he like

Yeah, Fowler needs more intensity and Sherman needs less.  That's why I think they need to swap names.  An attitude adjustment if you will.

I don’t believe at any time I called him a superstar. But he was definitely a star in the golf world.

So I guess it comes down to what someone considers “extremely successful”. Because he’s definitely “high profile” in the golf universe.

Lol, I have been arguing that he is in fact a star to a few detractors and now you want superstar?

Tell you what, you and Freeze can argue Rickie”s accomplishments, I’m out.

😂 I wasn’t saying he was or wasn’t a star a superstar or a megastar for that matter! Just provided actual definition to perhaps help people decide. And I’ll pass on arguing here… I come here as an escape. Not a stress inducer! What is it about me simply quoting someone in this thread with zero malice, and them acting like I shoved my finger into their chest?! 😜 ✌ 🤣

That’s why I put the “lol” in the front of the post.  No chest pushing was being claimed. 😉

IMHO the male golfing superstars since 1970 have been:

  • Tiger and Jack (can't be sanely disputed)

I would name a larger number of real stars:

  • Tom Watson
  • Phil
  • Trevino
  • Anyone else with at least 2 majors

A very large number of moons:

  • Anyone averaging at least one win every other year.

A huge supporting cast of extras (like most of the actors in Game of Thrones)

  • All the rest
