Rickie Fowler is a cautionary tale in overexposing a superstar

Didn't mean to stir the pot. I actually did a quick search before I posted and didn't see anything. I'll have to look back at the graph, should be interesting. Cheers...

No worries.  I don't think your theory is so outlandish.  Will be interesting to see the results of an additional datapoint, i.e. the marriage of JT.

Somewhere deep in this thread I think I actually plotted that graph.

But also, only a few guys have been able to hang around the PGA tour forever. More than they, some guys have a great run, or have periods of a great run. Hard to have a whole great career.

I mean, just look at Cink, Brendan Todd, or even Phil. They have had different resurgences over the past couple of years. Could be they are trying a bunch of different things and its not working, or they get different motivation or they are injured, or know what to do finally committ.

I don't think Rickie was ever a superstar, he was a solid top 50 for most of his career to date, occasionally rising a bit higher 2014-17.  Certainly not anointed to be the next Tiger or the next Phil.  Nice guy in a posse of young players who are now around 30 years old.

Certainly well known and rich from endorsements.  The flat brim and hair market niche initially.  So I think it's a bit presumptuous of us to call him a flop at this point.  Plenty of guys are recognizable in the crowd and would be a desirable pro am partner but never get to 10 wins, much less 20 and a couple majors.

He's done better at pro golf than any WRXer unless Tiger is signing on here as a 4 'cap.  Starting a family and financially secure.  I wish him well on and off the course.

Yeah, he got a bit better than a bit better as he reached #4 in the world and spent extended time in the top 10.

BUT….he does not suck at golf.  We will find out soon how bad he wants golf success or just commercial success.

Fascinating how this thread just grows. I think it is telling regarding his draw.  IMO Rickie is a true talent and expect him to improve in the standings sooner rather than later.

Absolutely. Advertisers are no dummies. They already knew that. There is a reason why we see him in commercials for Corona, Rocket Mortgage, Mercedes, CBDs, Farmers, Cobra, Taylor Made… More than we see him actually playing golf. I too hope he improves in the standings. I enjoy watching him play.

Don't have to be a superstar to get endorsements.  Tania Tare (2nd swing commercials) isn't a even a regular tour player.  Paige S gets a lot of attention for a non-tour golfer.

Rickie is the same age as guys buying their first house, buying insurance when they moved out of mom and dad's house and weren't still driving the parents' old Pontiac, and swilling beer.  Hence his appeal.  Would anyone believe Tiger and Phil are using apps to get a mortgage?  Let's see, $27 million principal, add PMI, and I get a homesteading tax credit...

Rickie needs to call Hunter Mahan to find out how to spend his free time. I would really like to know why a guy that was having a really nice career thought he needed to change his swing. He still has a lot of endorsements, but if his game keeps going south, he’ll be doing commercials for reverse mortgages and Medicare like Tom Selleck and Joe Namath.

Maybe I missed it but how does he still have a tour card after this season? The Players was 6 years ago and his last win was 2 years ago missed the playoffs, is there a Rickie exemption?

If nothing else, I’m sure he could use a career money list exemption.

ofcourse, but he doesnt qualify for any majors, the players or any big events unless stricker wastes a pick on him. And that would put Stricker in a tight spot if they lose and Rickie plays bad

For sure.. those are important.

Do you really think there's a chance in Devilsville that Stricker would pick Rickie ?

It'll be a freeze-ing day down there before that happens,,,,,,,, :classic_biggrin:

Rickie has 5 wins ( no majors)  in 12 years--he is not coming back ala Jordan

His outsized media presence has enlarged his wallet maybe at cost of his playing career

He is a nice guy with a cool middle name

He should retire , enjoy his wealth for the next 20 years and practice up for the Senior tour

My guess is that Fowler's off-course sponsorship commitments have never totaled more than 50 days per year. So, the amount of advertisements he appears in and, or, number of sponsors he has is irrelevant to his golf tournament play.  For his junior , college, amateur, and pro career Fowler's game has always included an unorthodox swing technique, inconsistent ball striking. He has always relied on a sensational green side pitching-chipping-putting game to shoot low scores. If and when Rickie's short game returns to previous form he will again be competitive to have top finishes and win tournaments.

I asked earlier in this post.  The exemption years for wins get tacked on up to a max of 5.  So when he won in 17 and 19 those 2 yr exemptions get tacked on to the 5 yr Players exemption. Without doing the math I think he's done next year

I don't think he does the juice isn't worth the squeeze, he would have skip over 30 guys that are higher on the points list.  But who knows who is whispering in his ears

So are plenty of other guys on tour. Rickie’s appeal exceeds his age. He has a higher Q Score than other guys on tour around the same age.

Can’t for the life of me figure out why Paige gets attention… 🤔🙄😆

to whoever suggested Rickie retire ...thats ludicrous

Rickie has quite a few good years to go, yes he is in a slump, but he still makes 6 figures a year on the course and probably 5 times that off the course, the career expectancy of a PGA pro is short in the grand scheme of things so while he is still young and physically able he isn't going to leave any money on the table. I am sure that seeing what has happened to his neighbor/friend TW and see how a career could possible get wiped out makes him dig just a bit harder. He is still capable of going low, he needs to find the magic to go low for 4 straight days

Five year for the Players and one additional year each for the two wins since. He is exempt through the 2022-23 season.

Paige has carry distances of 146 yards for her 7I and 245 for her driver.

Not only does she do a great job of explaining things, but due to similar swing speeds and driving distances, the average golfer has more to learn from a good woman golfer than a good male golfer.

On Youtube she has a whopping 247k subscribers!
