Who

The Sentry Tournament of Champions will kick off the new year once again, but with a unique field. Because of the reduced number of events in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all qualifiers for last year’s TOUR Championship also are eligible to tee it up in Maui. Dustin Johnson, the reigning FedExCup champion, highlights the field in his first appearance since winning the Masters.

 

Rory is skipping it; all other 'big names' are in the field, that qualified; Ancer & Finau (several others) get an invite due to the TOUR Championship exemption for this year. 

 

Television 

Thursday-Friday, 6 p.m.-10 p.m. ET (Golf Channel). Saturday, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. (Golf Channel). Sunday, 6 p.m.-10 p.m. (Golf Channel).

 

Thinking that's a typo for Saturday as it will be only 2 hours.

I always enjoy some night/primetime golf here on the east coast. Especially on a gap week for college and NFL football!

 

Edit: I stand corrected, the NFL playoffs start this week. Unless you're a Chiefs or Packers fan, of course

Still one of my biggest regrets. I was staying not even 2 minutes from the course and opted not to play it.

Probably my favorite course to play. My Dad introduced me to it @1997, and I played a lot of rounds there when I lived in the islands. Really fun layout, and the views cannot be beaten.

Bingo.  I've played the Plantation course many times through out the years and the first time was back in 1996 when I was in high school.  Great views, long and can be very tough if the winds kick up.  Other favorite course on Maui was Makena.  Target golf with beautiful ocean views.  In fact the whole damn island is scenic and like no other place on earth.  As soon as this pandemic subsides and the majority of the population has been vaccinated, I plan on making a trip out there with the wife.

They added the top 30 FedEx Cup guys, because of the shortened season last year.

Gut feeling - Tony Finau wins this week. Limited field event that he wouldn't have qualified for under normal circumstances. The perfect storm!

Hard to beat Reed, DJ, Justin, and Xander on a course they do really well at, but you’d think this place suits Tony well too

yeah, i don't see finau advancing past a very deep & talented field ... he's a solid top 10er for the next 5 years in these kinds of tournaments, but he's proven to be just that ...

It's not an extra 30 players from The 2020 Tour Championship as many of those players had already qualified from winning on tour in calendar 2020. At least 16 players qualified for the 2021 TOC by being in the 2020 Tour Championship. Rory McIlroy was the 17th but he decided not to play. 2 players that qualified via winning in 2020 (Jim Herman, Tyrell Hatton) are not in the field,

I played it a couple of times. The first was in a wind so strong the ball was being pushed off the green and I was hitting 4 irons from 120 into the wind.

 

The pros make it look like a pitch-and-putt, but it can be a female dog : )

Always love to see the views from the Plantation course. Played on Maui a few times, but never there. Next time...

I like that pick, and am rooting for Tony to win, however, he just can't seem to close out tournaments.  Great front runner, but I think he gets in his own way when pressure starts to creep in.  It's a shame, he is so immensely talented and has underachieved at the PGA tour level IMO.  I have DJ getting the win, however, my sleeper pick is Bryson.  He's done well at Kapalua in the past.  His prodigous distance will only serve him well.  The Plantation course is one of the longer courses on tour.
