Rory switching to X7’s

Recommended Posts

He seems to have turned things around... he’s got a great history bouncing back from MC’s.

No reason these shafts shouldn’t work for him, but the shaft+ball change would explain a rough week no doubt.

Worth noting he’s dropped the Spider and is back to Anser style putter. Good news imo.

I know this is a thread about the iron shafts but I never understand the want for Rory to move to Anser style putter and that it is for the better. Putting has improved with a Spider and in the one round in 2020 he switched to blade he discussed missing a short putt that was attributed to the blade and the miss left and Spider was right back in. Struggled again on Thursday with the short ones with a blade putter.

So I was already interested in this so I poked around. Rory's 38th in SG putting through the first two rounds this week. Losing -0.0006 SG, so basically nothing (11th in SG around the green interestingly).

Last week at Riv he lost -2.165 in TWO rounds to a MC. To put that in perspective, Morikawa was last in SG putting last week w/ -1.888. Thats a lot of strokes lost on the greens.

At the Waste Management he was 39th in SG putting, middle of the pack, lost -0.33 putting. Same w/ Farmers, middle of the pack.

He's still driving the ball amazing. But if you look it has been his approach play thats really hurting him more than anything. When Rory's at his best it seems like he hits everything close, so being a middle of the pack putter sort of doesn't matter, he more than makes up for it tee to green.

All of this to say, if I lost over 2 strokes on the greens the week before to a MC I'd probably switch putters too, and its not hurting him at all so far. The switching of iron shafts and the new ball seems to be the bigger issue in his game at the moment.

I noticed that on a lot of chips this past week - where he expected the ball to check a bit quicker - it didn’t. I don’t know if that’s ball or new wedge shafts but I’m guessing a bit of both. He will work on it and see that they are releasing a bit more. Just something that caught my attention this week at the API

On a TM Instagram post I saw this morning, it looks like Rory is back in his Project X shafts.  Video appears to be recent because he's wearing the same shoes he's been wearing this season.

If it was the water skipping shot TM posted today that's from their photo shoot in November or December of 2020.

After reading this entire thread, I'm gonna have to give X7's a try...

They're very good. I had been playing CTaper 130x since the first season they released. I was searching for something a little better feeling and took a chance on the X7s. I haven't noticed and more spin with them, and a touch lower launch. The thing I noticed most about them, which I found hard to believe myself, is that they fly even a little bit straight than the CTapers did for me. I can still work them, but on normal swings they just want to go straight.

Ok. That makes some sense. Thought a shoot was a possibility, but didn’t know for sure.

Ok...I think I'm in. I've ordered a set for my MP20's and will see how they go...

I played SPB's, PX 6.5's in the past and have been playing X7's for several months now, and they are perfect from every perspective. SPB's spun too little for me - PX 6.5's were fine but lacked feel. X7's just work. Love the larger handle, stiffer handle, feel, spin control is as good as my old X100's (without the loose handle). So yeah - X7's all day erry day.

Didn’t he win all his majors with 7.0’s?
