So far I've bought all my iron shafts without being fitted but they have all been basically the same.

Honestly - whatever the stock shaft for that particular model happens to be.

The manufacturer usually selects it to fit the demographic the set of clubs serve.

Interesting observation. For years the DG S300 seemed to be the 'stock' offering in 'players clubs'.

I'm interested in combo'ing the ZX5/7s without a chance to demo. Modus 105 in the 5s and 120 in the 7s. What does that tell me?

Mizuno shaft optimizer. Takes 5 minutes and will get you in the ballpark which is all you’re going to want anyways.  Local pro shops have them, big box stores, golf stores, etc. I got fit into modus 120s and tried the shaft optimizer and it put me into modus 105x followed secondly by the modus 120s. So I would say it’s pretty spot on.

Another vote.  Srixon use them as a stock option in most of their irons no?  I have some in my MMC MP20s.  I could also play the DG120s.  Weight is most important for this poster.  112-115 grams is about my sweet spot.  89 mph 6 iron.

If you could wrangle him to a shop that has the Mizuno shaft optimizer, all it takes is three swings and it spits out three top choices. I think it works pretty well.

I suppose it would take away some of the surprise, though.

If you are leaning on the T100s because he likes them, then you are very limited in stock shaft offerings and will be digging deeper just to get options vs. a Mizzy JPX 921 Forged with some Modus 120 S or 6.0 LZ as no charge up grades.

I think people are missing that he swings at 85 with a 6i, not driver, which isn't exactly slow for an iron speed.

he swings pretty good....is a workout nut.....

But you (we in this case) don't know what he has in his clubs already.  You said that you are at 83mph with a 7i which is generally the same speed with a 6i, I disagree with this on the premise of gaining 3 mph from 1/2" of steel (going with safe assumption) shaft.

can you guys keep it on point? I would appreciate it......thank you for contributing. its not this complicated....just trying to do something nice for my buddy who was there for me and my family during a family sickness...thats all.....wanna do right by him as best i can

Maybe the answers are all over the place because the answer is get fit?  Looks like Club Champion gave you the same answer - now, it may be in their interest to do so, but the answer seemed valid.

I know you seem to be against fittings for whatever reasons, and that's fine, but if you are buying the guy a whole new set of irons set him up with a fitting where the cost is waived if irons are purchased.  That's pretty common, but no idea about your access to pros/shops.  A Ping or Titleist green grass fitter may be just the ticket.  If not waived the fitting will be less than the cost of one of the irons.

You may both enjoy it, or you get to say "I told you so" -- what could go wrong? 😉

You asked a question that was going to get many different replies from various points of view.  Everything was on point, as they would contribute to a decision of which direction to go if you were actually thinking about it.  If this is to 'not be complicated', then it shouldn't matter what goes in.

It was basically a loaded question wanting 1 answer to be right, when that was never going to happen.

You say you want to do right by him, but making a random choice off suggestions from random people on a golf forum who know nothing about the guys swing vs. the right choice seems like their is an obvious answer.

120g is quickly becoming the standard for stock offerings on players irons. The choice in shaft tells me the ZX5 is designed to fit a broader audience. I would be concerned with doing a split set with different shafts in them.

Most sets that manufacturers configure to be comboed will have the same shaft in them. Mizuno MP line comes to mind.

The weight difference in a S flex between the 105 and 120 is less than 8 grams. I wouldn't purposefully buy the mismatched shafts myself, but if you need a little more club head speed to launch the long irons, and you are finding that a little bit lighter weight is helping you get the launch and distance, then it's not a crazy pairing at all. Not that much different than a ascending weight shaft set like AMT which is also in a lot of stock offerings.

I'll go out on a limb here and say trust Titleist and go with the stock shaft option. 👍

What clubs does your friend have now and what shafts are in them?

When fitting someone it's important to stay with a shaft that's roughly the same weight as the old set, unless you have a specific reason to change.

i would but he would not be able to sit through it.....i thought of that and wanted to put him through the whole experience but knowing him the way i do.....it would be a disaster for the fitter.....lol.......the fitter would be wrong at every turn.   My buddy is a great great person...but quirky....thats all i can say. im sparing the fitter on this one.

R7 irons are game improvement type and use lightweight shafts unless custom ordered.  Again, it's important to know what the weight is so you can make an appropriate next selection.

Edit: apparently there was also an R7 Forged which came with heavier shafts...

I was going to post the same thing, but you've saved me the trouble.  So....

What Nessism said.  🙂

I think its best to get something close to what he's using now, both in weight and flex terms.  Deviating too far from that, he might wind up frustrated with the new set.

I like the Nippon idea thats been mentioned, but the 120 comes with a caveat; its profile is about a flex softer than DG.  If your friend is in DGS currently, 120 stiff may not be so good.

Took a quick look at the GolfWorks OEM shaft replacement guide.  R7 irons are shown to have a 90g steel shaft.  R7 TP used DG.  If he's in the standard R7 set, Nippon 105 would be a good take IMHO.  Or, maybe Recoil 95.

Have fun shopping.  🙂

That information makes a huge difference in the recommendation.  The R7 used unitized shafts, which means all shafts are cut from one blank.  I suspect the blank weighs about 100 grams and after cutting to size each shaft gets lighter as the shafts get shorter.  The 90 gram reference may be for the 6 or 7 iron.  Not sure.  What seems clear though is that you would be wise to steer your friend towards some clubs with shafts at about the 100 gram range for a target.

funny thing is, he is a beast when it comes to strength.....100g seems so light for him but it is what it is....maybe ill sneak in a 120g shaft so he keeps it in the fairway
