The funny thing about that was I did that last week.  It had been dry.  This was a slight downhill approach about 125 out.  Perfect for that club to bounce short and roll out a little (flag in front).  Objective totally achieved except for sprinkler head with metal cap right at the front.  Hits that.  Bounces stupidly high over the green.  Hits downslope on backside and gets a nice kick and of course.....rollout.  So yeah.

 

I like the Garmin watch and app.  The club distances is a very powerful tool.  Once I got enough data, I am rarely short.  I don't overestimate anymore and don't try stupid vanity shots on the tail of the bell curve.  I go for the meaty part of the curve.  Best money I ever spent on golf.

To venture a guess….most amateurs don’t have much yardage left on the table while the pros do.

Another way of saying the ams are swinging closer to 100% and less control.

My split cavities are 1* stronger than my blades so I'm about 150 carry with Kuro Kage 80g stiff shaft.

I just took an old set of Rawling Penna Lite irons (I bought these new in 1987)  to the range today, pleasantly surprised that my 7 iron was going 150yrds when well struck but if I didn’t catch it right, it was dropping down to about 130-135yrds. Shaft is R300 and I think the 7iron is 38 degrees.

I played today, it was 90+ degrees and extremely humid. The ball was just carrying forever and then the fairways and greens were firm so it was taking a huge first bounce. 
 

if you ask me how far my 7-iron goes on a day like today, it would be some ridiculous number. Ask me again come January and it will be ridiculous in the other direction.

I am making the change to 99 DCI's 990B to help me with my hook. The 7 iron is 36 deg. Based on what I can tell I should be able to hit it 156 with an easy swing. My only goal with my irons and my & woods is to have my yardages covered from 125 to 205 so I don't have to hit anything other than a stock shot. My s.s. can reach over 110 with my 2 wood because I swing much harder of course.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Those are some nice looking irons.

Man how times change…this OG post was with a Ping i500…now I’m rolling with a g425 with a dg 105 in stiff…yardage is dead nuts the same but consistency is waaay better with the 425s
