Rickie Fowler Receives Special Invite to PGA Championship

Adam SCott was never worse than 73 in OWGR in 2018.  Niemann had 4 top 10s on tour that year, coming from 1600th before the Masters.  So maybe that one was charity.  But in both cases, their current level of play was the factor.

Scott was actually 76th the week prior to the PGA Championship per the OWGR website. He had started 2018 in 51st.

My point in that information was to show others here that players have received a special exemption to the PGA in the past and it's not just a Rickie thing.

Huh? To not back door your way into the PGA and have enough pride to qualify on your own.

If he plays next week or the week after and somehow qualifies for the PGA w/o the need for the exemption I think that would show he had enough pride to qualify on his own. If he qualified this week or next week does it matter what week he qualified?

Other than being a nice guy - what IS Rickie's appeal ?

He has won 5 or six  times in 12 years ?

Arguably he was a more interesting amateur than a pro if it was not for all those commercials

Cause even when he don’t win

Rickie just wins ; )

I'll watch 100 Rickie commercials over the peyronie's disease ones or that old Rory commercial for Omega with "standing in the hall of fame!"

You guys get the Kars4Kids commercials?!

Ive come close to bashing my head against the sink or throwing my tv out the window when it comes on.

if he plays next week, who cares about the last three weeks he could have.

Fowler is good for the brand and whether people like it or not he works hard at maintaining his image.  I get the exemption but understand it makes people angry when something is given and not earned.  Just keep in mind that we have all been on the receiving end of nepotism at one point or another.  I won't be casting stones today.

The PGA is Fowler’s dad? That’s odd

I don’t know how you can “root” for Rickie. There really isn’t anything to root for. He wears bright pants and used to sport a swashbuckling mullet kind of thing, but otherwise he really is a very ho-hum player. Zero killer instinct, has folded like a lawn chair in some big moments, and now has fizzled into golfing obscurity. Good on him that he kills it in sponsorship money, but as far as rooting for a player, why would anyone root for someone that doesn’t really seem like he cares about winning?

Apparently the Trivago guy got an exemption into the US Open.

I get it, Ricky is more known for commercials than golf, so it is funny to joke about giving another well know commercial actor an exception to a major. Very Clever. 😉

I have to chuckle when wrx'ers say they wouldn't accept an invite that would never in a million years be offered to them.

Have you ever thought if you’d take the lump sum or the annuity if you won the lottery??? Yeah well never gonna happen so.... I personally think it’s ok to think about what you’d do in a situation even if you’ll most likely never be in that situation. Not really funny. But that’s just me.

Doesn’t care about winning?

How he go pro if he not a killer?

He’s more competitive than anybody out here, that’s for sure.

Guy can go out and beat every golfer on the planet. He’s done it.

And for years he was a top 10 player, even to #4, I think.

That means he went week in and week out beating the crap out of 145 out of 150 guys any given week. For years.

Now, I see your point, he hasn’t won enough.

But consider what it means to get out there and go and do what he does.

Rickie is a highly competitive person. But, and this is to his credit, he is enjoying the ride, win or lose.

In a world that seems to reward A-Holes all too often with financial success, it's nice to see a nice guy like Rickie eclipse most his peers in overall financial and life success.

Honestly your comment "I don’t know how you can root for Rickie" is pretty sour and reminds me of an old adage... if my dog doesn't like you then I probably won't either.
