Mizuno T22 wedges preview

@SwingMan thanks for the feedback.  I assume the raw exposure on the soles, would just get a rust color and be not too far off form the look of the copper finish?

I am looking at these or the Bettinardi HLX 3.0 in Black Smoke.  I'd have the same question about the durability of finish in those too, which I asked about in a separate thread.

When that copper wears, you have raw steel - so the sole will eventually look like raw steel where the sole hits the ground. Use it in the bunker  and the sole wears faster.

I wonder if these in copper denim will wear much like the jet black coating on Vokey wedges. I had that coating in SM7s and even when that finish wore off the wedges never rusted. It was like the costing had penetrated the metal. Idk I’m totally ok with my higher loft wedges looking rough. Makes me feel cool I guess. But I did go satin in the 46 and 50 since I feel like they’re more a continuation of my iron set. These fit me so well that they could have rust falling off and I’d still happily play them

I played the raw black SM7s for a couple years and they wear really cool, to me it looks great to have wear marks on the face and sole. You can also strip them to be completely raw. I moved on to the raw black RTX4 which hold up their color much better than the SM7. SM7 was matte and clung to the raw metal a little bit better, but the RTX4 are a little more glossy and don’t show a ton of wear from use, but when you strip them it comes off way easier than the SM7.

Anyways I say that to say this: with both Vokey and Cleveland, the groove area is always the same color as the heel/toe area, and they wear uniformly, or at least the face wears first and not the heel/toe. My concern with the T22 denim is that after they wear, the groove area is noticeably a different tone from the heel/toe creating a very square look and to me would be weird opening up the face having what basically amounts to a two-tone face.

@SwingMando you know if you are able to brush off some of the coloring on the groove area or does it stay copper while the rest of the wedge turns to raw? With both Vokey and Cleveland you can slowly blend the black color of the face away with a wire groove brush. Hope that makes sense, it’s the only thing holding me back from moving into the denim copper. I like the wear, but only if it’s uniform.. damn WRXers are a picky bunch

Here’s the face and sole of my 56 after 5-6 rounds.  Love these wedges.  Sole def wears quick from sand.  First it’s bright copper then you start to see a little steel underneath.  1520D6E4-39B2-4DE3-A8BD-257BC7E467E2.jpeg.e351b2bee9627c8d64ce0ed1565a757f.jpegB54C616B-D9B9-46E6-8409-27AA29502C3D.jpeg.3134c2c1eda817ab82d7c2a8914d44ac.jpeg

Mine looks similar to the photos above but I get the face more uniform by using a mild abrasive on it and the grooves.

I am guessing you can raw the face for uniformity by a heavy abrasive. But I found a very light abrasive when needed does the trick because you want that copper layer on the face for its feel.

Anyone go with the raw wedges and have pictures after some time?

Also wondering what people are using in a 58 degree? All of the grinds seem on the low end in bounce (compared to like a Vokey K) and I’m a digger on a soft-ish home course so I’m a bit scared.

X grind on my 58.  I’ve been known to dig but the wider sole on this one helps a ton

Don't know what to tell you.

On a 58, I learned to return loft at impact instead of a lot of lean - it's easier around the green. So I let the lag go on a high lofted wedge - it's just more accurate and consistent for me. I use the C Grind in the T22 and just open it up slightly on full shots and then more or less open around the green. But I did that with all high lofted wedges. I don't want big divots with a 58.

Don't know if that helps but opening up allows me to be aggressive without taking a big divot.

All three of mine are raw and besides some light wear on the sole and face, no real change after about 6-7 rounds and some range time. I haven't done anything to speed up the process. I prefer to let it happen naturally.

I have the 60x 6, coming from Vokey D with twice the bounce and haven't had any issues in soft conditions. But typically use the 56D 10, if it's dicey.

Very impressed with the T22's so far.

I’d like to see how the raw looks after a month or so as well. I have the copper now and don’t really see the big deal. Reminds me of the old Vokey oil can finish that I loved for years!

I ordered a 46 a couple weeks ago with the nippon wedge 115 and it’s still not here. First order with the 50 and 54 was just a little over 2 weeks. 58 took around 4 from mid December so I’m expecting about the same on the 46.

For me the date GG quoted was the date Mizuno delivered them to GG. They then shipped them to me which was an extra couple of days.

I thought about ordering one of these to try, but they have hardly any shafts left in stock and I have no idea what the wait time would be. Could be months. No thanks. I feel sorry for some of the OEMs right now, hope it doesn't start to affect their employees.

I love this wedge. I have a copper 58D.  I bought it because I want a high bounce lob wedge for my course that always plays really lush. My Vokey T is not the right club for my course.

I wouldn’t normally judge a wedge without hitting shots on a course or in a short game area off grass, but based on hitting it at the range it’s great.

The soft feel is noticeable. Very noticeable. Like old school Japanese Mizunos with the copper underlay I’ve hit back in the day. Love it. The ball seems like it stays on the face for a long time and the trajectory comes off low with plenty of spin.

It looks very much like a Vokey from top, except it’s a tiny bit more compact. The way the grooves extend into the toe makes the head look even smaller, but side by side it is the slightest bit smaller.

I know that the heads are bent into final loft and mine is the highest loft for that D head. Technically that should lead to less offset. I don’t notice that is has any more or less offset than my Vokey 60T.

My only gripe about the look is I don’t care for the plastic medallion they use to label loft and bounce. I’d prefer a simple stamp.

I’m pretty confident the 58D will play similar to a Vokey D, which I almost bought. The grip and shaft upgrades are free with the T22 and the raw isn’t an upcharge.  I am happy with the copper in terms of look and feel.  They compare very favorably to Vokey, especially if you find a grind that you like.

hit my copper 54s and 60C yesterday for the first time and as someone that has never had a forged wedge... I'm blown away by the feel. Just butter soft.

I also don't typically spin it much and I was seeing healthy 9999 with the 54 on full swings. That is huge for me. Excited to have these in the bag this season.

Same experience for me on spin. When choosing between my 50 and 54 even for a chip there’s a difference in the spin that I have to take into account. I’ve never had to do that before with any of my wedges. I’m not the best wedge player though so take this with a grain of salt

Im starting to think the wedge is a bit overrated or the s400 is not my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong it feels fantastic... probably softest wedge ive ever felt. Im only in my second round with it... and i use my 52* from 80 and in.. all around the green its the wedge degree i use the most except for not in the sand... i just dont seem to have the touch with it. Im truly thinkin its the s400 shaft for me. Also whats bringing me down is i think the denim copper is highly overrated. Its not a dark copper its very light and loses its nice denim pattern very fast. I played it two rounds and it looks like it went through a season and a half. The chrome is much nicer but i wonder how that holds up as well.
